"I can't cotton to" is actually an English phrase that means "I'm not in favor of." It did make its ways south because so many rich English gentries moved there. But it really doesn't have much to do with slavery or racism
@23Starcatcher4 жыл бұрын
Sure. But people don't really say that in everyday present speech and given the implications of 'cotton' and 'permanent serving' (in the same sentence, no less) doesn't bode well.

@KrimzonFlygon14 жыл бұрын
Or as Josh put it, it could’ve been Spike only taking the surface tenants of it to an extreme. Like, imagine if this was a S8 episode and Smolder was a thing: after all the hijinks she could’ve set the record straight. Smolder: She released you and you’re _willingly staying indebted?!?_ Spike: But the Dragon Code... Smolder: Is the most humiliating thing a dragon can endure! You should be _leaping_ at the chance to get out of servitude! Double Aesop: ‘understand a faith before you commit to it or risk embarrassing yourself’.

One of the better theories I like about Timberwolves is that they are animated by the existing magic of the Everfree. Another is that the twigs and branches were infused by the souls of vicious predators that have dies in the forest.
@Ookami883 жыл бұрын
@Jurassic Hero There is a difference between possession and manipulation. What you describe and bring the example of poltergeists is their ability to manipulate inanimate objects. What I wanted to point out was that Timberwolves could be possessed spirits that use twigs and branches as their medium because plants are still alive. Even cut off branches still have life in them for a while, since you can use them as saplings to plant new trees. It is possible that the spirits of predators can only use the barely alive sturdy tree branches as medium to imitate life. Though, to be honest, that's only my own opinion.

Re the cotton/serving thing: The noun form of "cotton" comes from the Old French word "coton" which comes from an Arabic or Egyptian root. It refers to the plant which was commonly harvested by slaves. The verb form "cotton to" or "cotton with" comes from the Welsh "cytuno" which means "to agree". I can see how the choice of wording might lead to unfortunate implications, but it's just a homonym.

Also, as far as Spike's code is concerned. I think the reason behind it is this. In some legends (and even Dreamwork's Dragons.) I have heard that some dragons have an instinct to protect those close to them. Other legends say that some dragons protect the weak and never harm the innocent. In other words; Garble, you're fair game to be eaten alive. Because you're about as innocent as a U.S. politician

What you said about the Buddhist's meaning about material things makes sense. In the Simpsons, it's explained that ATTACHMENTS to material goods kills the soul. You can play with a ball, drink a soda from McDonald's, play a video game and such. But when you start valuing those things as if they have a life...that's questionable. The only time I place attachment on personal goods is when said goods have sentimental value to me. When it comes to a toy I've had since childhood, a favorite book or even a blanket my mother made me. That's when material things have value to me. But I could care less if my TV dies, my computer dies or if all technology dies

The worst part is that this didn't have to be a bad episode as the initial setup had a lot of potential. Here's one way it could have gone. After Spike gets the day off from Twilight, he realizes that he can't think of anything to do so he goes to visit each of the Mane Six to see if they want to do something and ends up helping them with something. He helps Rarity with her shop, he helps Applejack with her farm work, he helps Pinkie bake, etc. And as he's doing this, he slowly realizes that he is most happy and fulfilled when he's being helpful or, in other words, being a good assistant. To sum it up, this could have been Spike's (metaphorical) Cutie Mark episode.

This episode would be infinitely better if at the end it turned out this Spike was just a Changeling, and the real Spike walks in after, like, spending a day at the spa or something.

The concept of life debt in this episode is done really bad. When someone saves your life, you shouldn't be put in their debt, because saving someone's life should be something you do either way. Look to Star Wars for a life debt that works. Wookies can put themselves in someone's debt IF THEY WANT. It's considered a great honor to the one it's being paid to, and the wookie is honored among his own people, but it's entirely up to them. At the moment I can only think of two life debts in the whole of star wars legends: Chewbacca and his family's debt to the Solo family, and Bowdaar's debt to Revan

+RedfurredPikachu Then maybe the staff needs some kind of continuity specialist, someone to go over each episode in development and make sure nothing in it contradicts anything from a previous episode. Or maybe the writers all need to keep in touch with one another. Basically, whatever was going on in Lucasbooks from 2002 to 2005 needs to go on in the MLP staff because the Clone Wars Legends writers all seemed to be on the same page, except for spinoff writers like Genndy Tartakovsky. The MLP comics are starting to follow the show's continuity a lot closer, so they may be on the right track already.
@RedfurredPikachu5 жыл бұрын
@@realJoeMavro Do they need too? I mean when you compare how Spike's been handled after season 5 he's been treated a lot better where his episodes have been consistently good and they understand how to bring out the best in his character. I like to think that the Dragon Code is a result of Dragon Quest: Spike being so desperate to be different from the aggressive dragons that he made up a code to follow. The whole issue with it not existing later would have been easy to resolve as well: Twilight could have just reminded Spike that he doesn't need a code to be a good dragon. Of course, that wouldn't save the rest of the episode, but it would make things a little better

I agree with most of this review, but I just wanted to comment on one part in particular. As someone with OCD (and ADD), I have experienced moments like the one Twilight had - someone wanted my attention but I was too focused on something else to even notice them even raising their voice at me, so they did something that bugged me because of my OCD (and ADD), like tapping a pen repeatedly on a table or moving my book slightly. Usually, I did not react as calmly as Twilight did, though, but got mad at the person for disrupting my concentration. However, it still worked to get my attention, which is why I didn't think twice about it when it occurred in the episode - I saw that part of myself in Twilight and related to being entirely too caught up in what I was doing (most often reading) to notice any external interaction. I'm not saying this applies to everyone with OCD, but it isn't entirely unbelievable, either.

There were two things about this episode that I thought were very interesting: 1. The original script for this episode had a rarity as the one spike owed a life that too, but they switched it to Apple Jack when they realized just how bad rarities character would become to make it work. 2. The writer for this episode worked on adventure time before moving to MLP this actually explains a lot. The actions and personality quirks they laid on Spike would not have looked out of place at all on the main character of adventure time.

As for the writers, some have left and others have come in. So it's not so many at once. But yes, it means the new writers need to learn the ways of the old. One continual issue is that, since these are stand alone episodes rather than story arcs, they probably have multiple writing teams working on different episodes at the same time. And there might not be enough communication.

No question how bad this episode is, but I have an idea for where the "noble dragon code" came from. I think Spike may have created it BECAUSE of his prior meetings with dragons. They didn't live up to his expectations, so he created a code to live by so he could become what he felt a dragon SHOULD be. This ep proved it needed serious revisions, which is why he doesn't follow it after this. I realize the reasonings flimsy, but it's how I cope.

There's really only one story I can think of where the whole 'Life Debt' idea actually panned out as something good, and that's because the characters in question are best friends and one of the most iconic duos in cinematic history: Han Solo and Chewbacca.

The problem is that Spike has been shown to be smarter than that and this was 3 seasons in. Yeah he's still a kid but even kids can tell when something sounds too unreasonable if their mature enough.

I like the idea of Spike having made his own moral code to try and differentiate himself, even if only to himself, from other dragons who are, less than stellar, but, the way it's done, is subpar. Now if it were just, "I'm just gonna help you out FOR A DAY." THEN it'd be a lot less painful. I suppose it's not unlike GT in a sense. Good ideas, but lacking in execution. Except at least GT has some cool moments and is a guilty pleasure to some. This episode, not so much.

"He's a dragon, he could have breathed fire." They did a comic about this. Yeah, he can burn the Timber Wolves away, but until they're reduced to ash, they're temporarily EVEN *MORE* DANGEROUS THAN BEFORE.

Why did one of the coolest enemies I've seen the Mane Six face have to debut here? The Timberwolves were awesome antagonists, and they need to be in another episode other than this! Who's with me on this! Who votes for more wolves of timber!?

I'm actually neutral towards this episode. The core elements of the plot suck, but I like a lot of the little moments. Twilight's OCD, Rainbow's novel and being willing to smash into all those rocks, Rarity being willing to eat that gross pie for Spike, the cool looking timberwolves and Spike being smart enough to see through the fake one, etc.

This remains my least favorite episode of the entire series for the exact reasons you mentioned, Josh. It is a complete disgrace how Spike is portrayed in this episode. This is not Spike, but just a terrible interpretation of his character. And then there's Twilight just completely ignoring him when he tells her what he's been doing. AHHHHHHHH I absolutely loathe this episode. Everything about it makes me want to tear my own hair out.

Gobo Kinje also, if this idea is that thorax impersonates spike in order be intro to friendship, then why would he tell applejack that he owe her for saving his life because then he would be lying and making her believe she save spike from danger when rly he was somewhere safe and lying is bad especially when trying to get a friend, but im just helping with your idea =P

You summed up Merriewether willams bad writing in a nut shell and it's why people really hate mysterious mare do well. All of her bad episodes had characters acting either like idiots or jerks to move the plot forward. Wonderbolt's academy was her previous one before this one, and I think that one was just a fluke that it was actually good for me, probably because there was a jerk character she could use without turning everyone else into one. It's all subjective of course, but when it's obvious a writer clearly just isn't trying to make something good, it's really hard to defend the story from people who don't like it.

I like to think spikes ideas of the "noble dragon" came from pony written stories . I mean, he grew up in a library and we hear about spike reading a story where the hero's a dragon in flurry of emotions . Mabey he belive that some dragons out there are like the dragons in the story.
