Worth noting the original director of what became Brave was fired halfway through production and the new directors changed the film a LOT, so the first-draft dialogue thing is probably true, and also explains why nothing makes sense.

I also think it’s so similar to Disney films like Aladdin and Little Mermaid and typical cliches like Quest for Camelot (not Disney film but mentioned here) because the director was trying to make some commentary on those plots and do it better. But badly failed.

What’s even sadder is that this was going to be directed by Brenda Chapman, who made The Prince of Egypt. But she was fired because of creative differences between John Lasseter, and she was replaced by a director who had no idea what he was doing. I really think there must be a Chapman Cut of this film, because according to the Blu-ray bonuses, they cut out more than 80% of the film, probably after Chapman was let go of. I really want a Chapman Cut of Brave called The Bear and The Bow, make it a Disney+ series.

The movie was rework and we got the current "Brave" movie. There's a KZbinr here that did an hour long analysis and included the behind the scenes and why it went wrong. Another KZbinr talks abouts what's the possible folktale the movie may have based on. In the end, the movie was a Frankenstein movie that was done poorly.

I think one of the biggest sins of this movie was that they barely even focused on Mor'du's backstory, because at least there could've been a thematic reason as to why the queen also turned into a bear. It could tie into the story of Mor'du and how he lost both his family and his humanity. Being the eldest son who's most prominent trait was his power, he was furious to find out that the throne was to be separated between him and his brothers. He felt as if his birthright was taken from him. This resulted in him slicing the stone tablet of him and his brothers, severing his relationship with them. This also ties in with Merida slicing the tapestry of her family and how she almost did the same thing as him. Needing power in order to defeat his three brothers, he turned to the witch and gave up the ring that symbolized his family. With the spell in his hand, he was given the choice to either mend the broken relationship with his younger brothers, or to gain its power to rule over them. He chose the latter, resulting in the literal and figurative loss of his humanity. He accepted the form of the beast, and brought havoc for generations to come, with the descendants of his brothers eventually forming the four clans we saw in the film. Merida turning her mother into a bear was meant to represent how she forcefully wanted to change the status quo, almost the same way Mor'du did. However, this resulted in the queen almost suffering the same fate as Mor'du. But because they still cared and loved each other, the queen used her newfound strength to stand up to Mor'du and protect her loved ones. In the end, Merida did change her mother, but in a way that mended the relationship of the two. As oppose to Mor'du desire to change how things worked, which only resulted in death, tragedy and the destruction of his family and humanity.
@elderlybrunch4169
@elderlybrunch4169 Жыл бұрын
This movie might even have come across as *better* without the Mor'du story, because if they were trying to teach them a lesson about selfishness and severing familial connections, then *Merida* should've turned into a bear, not Eleanor. And I personally would've felt more connection to the material that way. If Pixar REALLY wanted to do the bear thing (even though it was already done better in Brother Bear), Merida should've felt insecure about her lack of interest in the princess duties and asked the witch for a spell to change *her,* not her mother. The movie could've played out exactly the same after that. And maybe not lean so much on the idea that a war would start if Meroda doesn't get married?? Cause now it seems like the neighboring kingdoms will be pissed later on when they don't have the money or good trading routes because the betrothal didn't go through as promised. 🙄 They just really should've stuck with the angle it was advertised as instead of this garbage. When I saw trailers for this movie on TV, I thought it would be a really cool story about a badass princess who fought bad guys and shot a bow and didn't back down to anyone with a lot of Celtic lore and fairy tale creatures. :( Instead the only fictional creatures we got was Scary Evil Bear Man (which at this point is just an immortal bear) and the Will-O-Wisps which we barely even got a glimpse of.

The comparison between Brother Bear and Brave on the bear transformation is on point. The main problem is that Brave has a lack of symbolism In Brother Bear, the Bear is specifically stated, represents "love," and when Kenai gets this spirit totem, he hates it. Only after he turns into the Bear does he develop a "brotherly" love for Koda and pushes pass his hatred for bears. In Brave there's no clear indication of what the bear is supposed to represent despite appearing all throughout the movie, which is why Elinor turning into a bear seems to have no meaning outside of the irony that her husband is bear killer.

Kenai turned into a bear because of his totem. His totem was a bear, which was the totem of 'love' and he dismissed that notion so he turns into a bear to learn the value of love. The bear he killed was just an animal to him, a beast some might say. So he turns into a bear to learn that bears were just as alive as he was and were affected by what he did. There were multiple reasons for a bear specifically but the main one was in fact his totem and learning to value love moreso than the bear he killed.

I'm glad I'm not the only one here....I found Merida to be the most selfish Disney princess of them all. Jasmine didn't want to be forced to be betrothed because she wanted to marry for love and that wasn't something that'd hurt anyone. Especially after she already fell in love with Aladdin. Hell, even in the remake, they show more of her having a concern for her people and not wanting to marry a corrupt idiot, and also loving Aladdin. And in both versions, she greatly loved her father. Merida all too willingly went to use a potion on her mother which nearly permanently turned her into a bear. She seemed way too eager to risk that and that selfishness was sickening. And I know the mother was also selfish, but she was doing it for her people, and following the tradition she grew up with, and Merida had hardly any regard for what a potion from a stranger could do to her. She isn't portrayed to be super naïve either so it comes across as cruel. She's an awful person who didn't care about her people or her mother until what, the end of the movie? I saw it recently with my mother and we both felt the same--very uncomfortable at how little regard she showed for using a potion on her mom. Her mom did look like she's straight up dying and Merida would say things like, "are you going to change your mind about me being betrothed?"
@cartooncritique6625

It honestly it gets worse the more you think about it. Never mind her turning her mother into a bear, because that was an accident. What other Disney characters have done something like that?

Agree. It's no wonder why I find Merida to be my most despised Disney princess, and also shows how Pixar, despite their innovation, actually isn't that good in creating princess films unlike its parent company Disney. I honestly didn't get why Merida received so much praise for breaking away from the stereotypes of other Disney Princesses before her when her film came out, when in all honesty, Disney already had created a "badass princess" already and had done it right via Fa Mulan from Disney's "Mulan" back in 1998.

It first started out as a project called The Bear and The Bow (which i think is a much better title) and was gonna be directed by Brenda Chapman, which would’ve made it the first Pixar film with a female director. But there was a lot of creative differences between her and the studio. This ultimately led to Chapman being removed from the project. Mark Andrews then took over and became the new director. @@cardboardbox5704 Hydra fight, you literally get to see Hercules decapitate the Hydra then cut to the stump bulge and sprout two new heads, ending with Hercules getting eaten and having to cut his way out. Same with the Boar in the montage, Hercules fires arrow, we get to travel with the arrow, right before the boar gets head shot, hard cut to vase depicting Hercules serving it to the city on a platter. The problem with Brave isn't that they aren't 100% accurate, its that they didn't even try to display any of the mythology except the Will-o-wisps tenatively. You could set this movie in just about any period, with any european culture and not much changes. The witch is generic enough, the story is generic enough, the only thing even holding it to Celtic mythology is the characters design, accents, and Wisps which could easily be exchanged for generic magical help for them to break the curse.

Just while listening to this, I had an idea for how to improve that one specific aspect of Cars 2. Have a scene where Mater meets another vehicle who seems to have a similar personality to him, they hit it off because Mater is still mad at Lightning at this point. The other guy gives him some good advice to reconcile. Then it's revealed he's the American spy and just really likes using the country bumpkin persona in cover. This fixes 3 things. 1. If this specific agent has a reputation for the country bumpkin mask being used a lot, it makes since the other spies wouldn't immediately sense something is wrong. 2. It furthers Mater's subplot with Lightning. 3. It gives him a better reason to stick the beacon on Mater right before being grabbed and kidnapped, since he knows him and knows he at least has a good heart. Maybe their conversation went to Mater's work with lemons and the spy figured he might be helpful in this.

Here's a problem I always had with the film. I always felt like Merida had an easy solution to all her problems. She could've just said "I like riding horses, shooting bows, and not wearing corsets. I will marry the prince who has absolutely no problem with me doing all those things". It seems like she would have more freedom living with her new husband than she does living with her Mom. All her suitors did seem pretty feeble, so she was likely to wear the pants in any of those relationships. Yes, she's still marrying a man she doesn't love, but the film put way more emphasis on her lack of freedom than it did on that aspect.

This is why she went for her own hand. The mom was very dismissive of her daughter. Yea Merida complained a lot but can you blame her when she has no say in anything whatsoever that even a war could break out that is a lot to have on your shoulders and to be forced to be mislabel and lose her freedom to. It wasn't an easy solution. It was very clear she didn't love them and to be forced to marry someone you don't love and have all you like taken away isn't living. @@dracophoenixttv Its called dutty. I know this generation cant understand the fact that in the past, royalty would marry for alliance and to keep their nation safe and not go to war. I know the sense of "Sacrifice" is foreign to a selfish generation but sometimes you have to think further than "I want to be happy". Thats what it means to be in position of leadership. You do it because of duty not because you want it. Pretty sure if you lived during these times youll be mad to learn that your princess doesnt want to get marry to such and such man cause she's looking for "love", and thus sending you and the kingdom into a war that could have been avoided. But because we live in a different time, its easy to judge these people and talk about "love" and not wanting to be a princess. I am not a Brave fan, in fact I greatly detest it, but there's no way I'd say it's worse than The Good Dinosaur. The KZbinr *eliquorice* actually does a good job showing how the archery contest scene is done extremely well. I disagree that the corset makes Eleanor looked detached, or at the very least, her being detached makes her look awful. Merida is going through the same thing Eleanor had to go through meaning Eleanor would know the pain Merida is feeling but as the queen she's expecting Merida to grin and bare it like she did. Also in that exact scene, we see Eleanor let the queen mask slip a bit because seeing her daughter properly dressed brings up maternal instincts. She instinctively wanted to nurture Merida but held it in.

The one tiny bit of detail I did like was one of the sons that was competing for Merida's hand in marriage had a running joke where he talked in an incredibly thick accent. The bit that interested me was that Pixar told the actor to speak gibberish in a Scottish accent, but the actor (who was a northeast Scottish native) said "Actually, I'll just speak my native tongue instead" so if you listen to his lines carefully, his lines does fit the dialogue. In fact, the casting is one of the few things I would give Brave credit for, it's full of talented Scottish actors like Billy Connelly and Robbie Coltraine (RIP) with a few British ones who do their best with such a weak script. While Disney is known nowadays for casting actors who are close to or part of the culture their films take place in (i.e. Moana, Coco, Encanto), before Brave they didn't really do that with rare exceptions like Mulan.

The movie about the curses and the highlands and the Prince from the past turned into a giant bear now threatening them... That sounds like a big great epic that should be called. "Brave." Walt was never about the money, but family. Disney as a whole is a shell of what it once was and all it represented. And now, Pixar is falling down that same hole with its woke and gay agenda garbage. Walt Disney was hardly a saint, but at the end of the day, he was humble and knew what mattered. All this modern trash is just an insult on him and his legacy as well as our childhoods. And other places are no better these days. It’s why I’ve all but given up on modern media and modern entertainment as a whole, say for a few exceptions. I always thought it didn't make much sense for Merida to be given in marriage; the marriage was supposed to bring peace between the clans, but if you give the princess royal to one clan, that just means one clan would have a connection to royalty that the other ones lack, which would create imbalance between them. It would have made more sense for Merida's brothers to be be married to daughters from each clan, since there are three princes and three clans. Merida could have become queen after Fergus and kept the royal line going.

I'm 50/50 on Brave. I think the voice acting, despite being insufferable at times is delivered well and portrays the emotions of each character perfectly. The characters are a whole other story though: I liked how wild and loud her father was, but I knew that a lot of the film's humour would centre around stereotypes surrounding the clans, which were a little tasteless, to say the least. Merida, for what she's worth, has at least one defining moment in the movie that shows that she's changed over the course of the movie, and that's the scene in the Great Hall when she's able to break up all the fighting between the clans, and encourages the sons to make their own choices too, rather than be forced into an arranged marriage by their fathers. Though, aside from that, I always found her to be whiny and obnoxious, dim-witted and squeamish despite being constantly referred to as a "Tomboy" (which is only evident in the scene when she's using her bow and fighting off her father.) and as for Eleanor? I couldn't stand how little she took into consideration her daughter's feelings, and it came off like she was being built up to be the film's antagonist. Mor'du was a service level villain and I didn't care too much for him, but the lore surrounding him was interesting. The music is gorgeously composed though, and the animation does show a lot of improvement over the course of the company's history. Overall, it has a lot of flaws but it has small doses of good sprinkled between, even if it's minor. I'll still come back and watch, if not for the Gaelic vocals and the emotional moments when Merida is with her mother as a child.

Do you know how this movie really could have been better? If Merida actually killed her mom. Think of it. This would have opened up a whole new possibility of development. I was excited for this movie based on the trailers, thinking it was a movie about Merida going on some spiritual/magical quest to change her fate. I thought this because that was what the marketing was implying in the trailers/posters/synopsis. I can clearly see why they left out the part about her mom becoming a bear, as they probably realized how dumb the entire middle of their movie was and decided to not show it. I would have probably preferred a movie about the Demon Bear and how he came to turn on his brothers over this movie.

Oh, yeah, this one… I remember watching it on theater, and I remembered only the fight scene between Merida and her mom and the bear transformation scene. There are moments that completely got me off guard looking at it back. Now I understand why this is considered to be Pixar's most forgettable movie (An original one, at least). Quite ironic that it's also their only Princess film (And they know it, otherwise they won’t reference it in Ralph Breaks the Internet).

the main problem with Brave and Frozen 2 too is that the princess never have to do any actual sacrifice, they just complain they want things done their way and that it, they get what they want, but thats not what happens in real life, in real life we have to work , we have to make commitments, and sometimes we have to give up of one or two dreams in order to bring the great good in our lifes.

Honestly, my biggest problem with Brave is it was too predictable. For example, I called who Mor’du was going to be the instant they mentioned the story about the prince who wanted power and turned into a monster. Then, later, the witch mentions the same prince, so by the time Merida puts two and two together, my reaction is less, ‘Oh, snap! I did *NOT* see that coming!’ and more, ‘Oh, what took you so long?’

Believe it or not, I think there could be a sequel to Brave that aims to fix what was flawed, according to what Mr. Enter and many others have pointed out. It worked for producing Cars 3, right? I can see why others praise and adore Brave though. A sequel to Brave can feature improved lighting and a step-up for Merida's character that can make her more likeable.

If you ask me Brave is far from the worst Pixar film. Is it a masterpiece? No. Is it terrible? No. Considering all the crap Pixar has made in the past decade I'd say Brave ranks somewhere in the middle of their entire catalog maybe in C or D tier. If you want something truly awful whose very existence is a crime against humanity look to something like Lightyear or Toy Story 4. Brave on the other hand is just meh.

While I don't think it's nearly as bad, I do agree that it lacks that Pixar punch a lot of other movies have. Maybe it's because of how Merida reacts to certain things, as you pointed out. The setup was a good start as a young woman being forced to marry someone she doesn't even know or like can be a compelling story.
