If you watch the American documentary about the making of it, the VFX team indicate the intention was always to have a flying energy bolt come out of the Cybermen’s guns. Nothe EXACTLY! Lucas took it way too far. REPLACING ROCKS with CGI rocks? He actually managed to ruin great elements or scenes by doing that when it simply wasn't needed. Good example of updated effects for Star Wars? Improvement to Cloud City shots to expand the scale and look. Key is to keep it within the context and FEEL of the era or what would've been possible, as the video says itself, with a bigger budget. Still ironic that some practical effects from 30 years ago still out class CGI ones. Like the alien from 1982's "The Thing". Expertly done. Even older? The animation of the creature from "Forbidden Planet". Considering the year that was made it's truly incredible what they achieved.

It's worth remembering that back in the day when these were first aired we all watched them as kids on cheap, small-screen, black and white box TVs. The shonky special effects didn't matter because the picture quality was, quite frankly, atrocious. We didn't realise this at the time, of course, simply because we had nothing else to compare it to. Thinking about it now, this may have had something to do with the decline in popularity of the original series from the eighties onward. As low cost, reasonable quality, colour TVs became available the horribly cheap production standards became more obvious.
@shadowedmultiverse4 жыл бұрын
It didn't help that the production values in the 80s weren't so much better than they were in the 60s, especially compared to contemporary sci-fi TV shows which had almost movie-level budgets.
@Poliss954 жыл бұрын
The picture quality was probably better back then. We saw transmissions of the original 2" video tapes. What we see now are film transfers from the original video tape which has in turn been transferred back to video tape. You lose picture quality on every transfer. Remember how bad videos looked when you made a copy of them.
@Gary-Seven-and-Isis-in-19683 жыл бұрын
This is the most sensible comment here, you're 100% correct and I was alive to witness it. Put kids in front of a screen on a Saturday early evening back then and they loved it no matter how naff it looks today. It was and is classic TV. This remastering is just an act of vandalism, probably primarily to milk the cash cow just a bit more and sell more product to a millennial audience who think this kind of act is actually improving rather than harmfully adulterating something precious and unique. When colour TV became more widely available from the mid 70's onward we had no real improvement in special effects when series such as Blakes Seven came along. Still beloved by many who watched it back then, it doesn't stand up to todays TV production standards. Try to enjoy these Historical Gems for what they are rather than what you think they should have been.
@GuyClapperton13 жыл бұрын
We were also used to other shows with effects of the time - and using imagination on, eg, Thunderbirds. Of *course* we could see the strings but that was the whole point, it was storytelling. It's worth looking at something like I Claudius - not because it's a good comparison with DW but as a reminder that TV was once about bringing a theatrical experience to the screen rather than the more cinematic experience we get today. I love the cinematic experience but I do accept that some of the apparently stilted performances and yes, effects shots that give you an idea of what was happening rather than convince you, were part of the TV landscape of the day. In terms of the next story to get a major CGI upgrade I'm going to stick with predictability and go "Invasion of the Dinosaurs".

The only one I can't enjoy too much is "The Five Doctors" but that has to do more with the editing choices than the effects. For instance, when the Cybermen ambush the Doctor and the Master, the musical cues no longer match the action as well as they did in the original. The extra shots also disrupted the flow of scenes (like the Castellan operating the transmat during the aforementioned ambush). But I also preferred the original Time Scoop and TARDISes departing. I always assumed that Rassilon did something so that each Doctor (along with their companions) could step into their _own_ TARDIS and he was able to do that because the TARDIS operates outside normal space and time. It's more "timey whimey" that way.

A modern rendering of the original idea would be pretty effective IMO. That said, me main issue with the SE is that the extended bits don't add anything 'cause this wasn't a case where cutting it to the right length for broadcast was an issue. THIS!!!!... 100% THIS!!! These new "enhanced" versions of classic Who, exist (and prosper) in direct correlation to the redundancy (and commercial antiquation) of the original transmissions. There were years when the original broadcast version of The Five Doctors was commercially unavailable, because it was not carried over in the BBC's packaging of their re-release, or sold for broadcast to networks. For the most part, I still prefer watching the original versions and am very glad that option still exists. I view the original effects as part of the show's history. While some of those effects may seem pretty cheap by today's standards (and unintentionally amusing), a lot of them were quite creative for their time... especially considering the extremely low budgets they had. Also, many of the CGI replacements feel out of place... giving us something that obviously would have never been achievable when the program was originally made. As such, they often stick out like a sore thumb. (Enlightenment is a good example.) The best CGI is something that looks like it could have been a well-done period effect, done so subtly that you might not even notice it at first. The new effects on Castrovalva are a good example. Warriors of the Deep has been brought up in this thread as needing new CGI. For me, CGI could do nothing to improve weak stories. If anything, the Myrka is probably the most entertaining thing about Warriors of the Deep, even if for the wrong reasons.

Replace the Rat... with ROLAND RAT and Renta Ghost? I'd pay to see that LOL Zak, I just had a thought: one special effect that would enhance the story historically? Scenes of industrial London? Like boats, ships, fog and other things to give a feel of the era? Done in the same style of the story but giving a true sense of life in the hustle and bustle of my Great GrandFather's time. That's one of the biggest benefits people over look. Enhancing the vision of the original script or making it more visually authentic? Then it's within the context of the story not merely an effect that sticks out like a certain *coughs* blue Genie in a remake of Aladdin. For once I thought it WAS un PC to have a BLACK guy play a Arabic character. But as Josh would say "That's just my personal opinion".

I watched a recent copy of that and they’ve already fixed it with picture regrading, so you can barely see it! In the commentary, one of the chaps who made it said ‘I realised later what the problem was, it wasn’t the costume itself, it was just too clean and dry, it looked fluffy when it should’ve looked wet and greasy, we should’ve dirtied it up a bit’ or words to that effect.

I'm normally not a fan of this sort of thing happening with classics (CGI facelifts), but looks like they handled it well and kept it fitting with the original vision and style pretty well. Another good example of doing it right was what was done with the original series of Star Trek. I enjoyed that walk down memory lane, Josh! I commissioned Mike Tucker to do the update on Dalek Invasion of Earth and it remains my favourite of all the stories with updated effects. Mike totally understood my brief and we both shared a vision of how the show might have looked given a movie budget back then. We were particularly keen to use 2D animation on the saucer moves (Earth Versus the Flying Saucers) and sparks from a real angle grinder for the heat ray effect (The War of the Worlds), coupled with the van glowing before exploding (The Day the Earth Stood Still). The model nuclear reactor still sits on my bookshelves at home. :)

Fascinating! I haven't watched old Dr Who since it was first broadcast on the ABC (repeatedly ad infinitum) during the 1970's & 80's - therfore I kind of know each episode you detailed really well. Fantastic to see the love and the passionate effort applied to bring the show up to a standard which respects the original, though corrects the vast array of poor technology available at the time of the original production. Mind you, at the time of original viewing, the suspension of disbelief was simple to achieve while watching one's favourite staple of science fiction!

Really glad they let this go back up as I was especially looking forward to watching it. Thanks for all your hard work putting this together! I've wondered how the differences between the original effects and CG would look side by side for years and this comparison is excellent. Love the originals but it's nice to have the option of CG / more updated effects and to know about all of the hard work that went into them. Honestly I found the "future city" effects in Day of the Daleks the most jarring but still interesting. I would also have Invasion of the Dinosaurs at the top of my list for updated effects. As much as I love Classic Who over any other Sci Fi series, the effects in that serial look like what Sid and Marty Krofft threw away for the original Land of the Lost. I've also always felt for a show with a Time Travel element, dinosaurs in Doctor Who were always woefully untapped. We did get one decent episode in the newer series, but after 50+ years of time travel you would think we'd see a BIT more dinosaurs. Ah well, fingers crossed.

One of the things I always say was special about watching all of classic who is that it is like watching TV grow up - updating the special effects would take away from that experience in my opinion. That being said, they do often look engaging - and at least it's a choice which version you can watch.
@BabetteBombshellOfficial5 жыл бұрын
It's a "choice" FOR NOW... But everyone I've ever encountered working in the industry, have always said that these bastard CGI revamps of beloved films & TV shows will only be available as an "alternative". That was touted in regards to Star Trek's CGI makeover. It was true at Lucas Arts when all the Star Wars films were "improved". It was also said about The Five Doctors CGI revamp, which went on to replace the original and be the only version of that anniversary special that was available commercially. The basic truth is that these new versions do exactly what they were designed to do... they exist to be exploited commercially to the fullest extent possible. They are deemed more commercially viable. That's why Netflix has chosen to only broadcast classic Star Trek, which features the revamped CGI FX, and it is also why George Lucas intentionally inhibits circulation of his original (unaltered) Star Wars films. These revamps are made to be pushed forward commercially. The moment they escape from the bubble of "special features" and start being sold for independent broadcast, they become an archival crime against the artistic integrity of classic Doctor Who's position in television history... The CGI revamps are pushed forward and the original broadcast versions become secondary relics, which ultimately, is why the revamps were created. They do what they were de$igned to do.
@markstephen18255 жыл бұрын
@@BabetteBombshellOfficial Star Wars's new effects were never supposed to be an "alternative", Star Trek's was always meant for rebroadcasting (the original is on the Blu-Ray) and The Five Doctors' point is moot since they have released the original one since.

Also Troughton is the only Doctor not to receive any updated effects on his stories. My favourite updates are Day of the Daleks for the new effects and Dalek voices Logopolis for its improvements to the Doctors fall from the pharos project Kinda for the snake effect The Five Doctors for its added scenes and new effects Revelation of the Daleks for its cleaner effects The Curse of Fenric for its movie feel, added scenes and moodier lighting.

This is awesome, I had no idea they were working on this, but after the STTOS reedit I'm not surprised. For me the though the visuals were never the problem with Doctor Who, it was the Audio. The sound designers never understood that their cool little humming, beeping, exploding, but mostly the humming atmosphere sounds were not supposed to be more important than the dialogue. My choice for replacement CGI would be the entire Key To Time series especially the Armageddon Factor.

Just as long as they don't go too over the top with the spaceship landing. I was amazed they built a "full-scale" spaceship and actually lowered it on a crane to simulate a landing. Mind you it's not so good when you see it up close and it's obviously wood that's been hastily spray-painted. That scene could do with heavy work, but they should leave the actual landing alone as much as possible.

This might ruffle a few feathers, but I'd be interested to see Pyramids Of Mars get a slight glow-up. IMO the effects look alright, but I can imagine some subtle work being done to make them amazing, e.g. the background effect for when Sutekh is travelling through the portal to Earth, or when The Doctor finds himself being tortured by the psychokinetic capabilities of Sutekh himself. Maybe get John Kelly or Rob Semenoff onto it if such a decision is undertaken for future Blu-Ray editions/special effects retouches

If I had ANY scene I'd like to see improved with CGI? "Two Doctors" opening scene in the 2nd (alternative reality?) Doctor's TARDIS console room with Jamie? CGI the room and console to make it look black and white 1960s style as his era actually was. Because I personally think his 2nd Doctor is one who never yet became the 3rd or 4th Doctor. Instead, he's been travelling with Jamie all that time (maybe under the manipulation of the Timelord CIA or on his own)?

The updated Earthshock globe also has the continents in the wrong locations. At the time of the Extinction of the dinosaurs (66 million years ago), the continents were mostly in their current positions apart from India (which was it's own island subcontinent), and Europe was mostly underwater, with the higher parts forming islands. The continents were not almost entirely joined together as shown here. Also, the asteroid impact was in Mexico, not Africa.
