I'm very late to this, but I know where the icons and entire UI is from - I'm a game designer and for a class project, we bought a UI package, I've used and seen every single icon, text font, window, button, and all those skill icons. It's called the RPG & MMO UI 5 pack from the Unity Asset Store. Every single bit of UI in this project is using that.

I mean maybe, or they have just used some art assets that they bought (and probably didn't steal) like most indie game devs do. Maybe it was a solo developer who was not an artist and focused on programming only. That is pretty common. Probably took on a project that was more than they could handle and had to release whatever was done in order to get at least some of the money that was lost in the process back. Not ideal but it is the reality of many inexperienced aspiring game devs.

The bizarre part is that the NPC movement is fine, maybe because the enemy movement is somewhat random that breaks whatever basic server/client movement library the game is using. Or when he implemented random movement he failed to hook it back into said library properly. Actually thinking about it more, maybe the server randomly moves them by picking a new location, and by then it's too late for the client to smoothly animate them from one place to the other since they are already at the new location. So basically he never implemented gradual movement along the intended line.

@@JoshStrifeHayes I discovered your channel a few days ago and I'm enjoying the this series in particular but you make great vids. I've been dipping in and out of MMOs for years now. My first MMO love was Final Fantasy 11 in which I spent years before eventually ending my sub after not logging in for months. I've come and gone for weeks and months at a time with Star Trek Online. (Oh how Cryptic needs a good writer! I'd do it!) I've dabbled with ESO but something doesn't seem to quite fit with me. I think it might be related to the fact I can't beat it all on my own and sometimes have to wait for other people to be doing the same quest and fighting the same boss so we overpower it together that undoes me. I love the lore but the game play can be unpleasant. I play Fallout 76 regularly since wastelanders made it decent and steel dawn made it good but not great but I burn through the new content too fast. (Even burnt through most of the old content which was basically "follow the trail of bodies to learn how each group of people died long before I could save them." Depressing. I'm meant to be a hero not an archaeologist. But as of a couple months ago or so I fell in love with Final Fantasy 14. Perhaps not a surprise but it's almost everything I want in an MMO. it was looking for FF14 vids that got me to stumble across your channel. Did you ever play FF14?

I think I used those giant crystals in the citadel as decoration in one of my student projects that was made exactly at the same time "Bloodlines of Prima" released (It was "create your first First-Person game in Unity"). The cystals are free in the unity store and have multiple really cool looking materials that aren't used here. So the person, who made the game probably only got free assets and slapped them together. And I have to say that all the games we made in one month looked better that this. They didn't even bother with giving every material the right amount of reflection. This definity doesn't look like it was made in 2020.

If I had to come up with a plot for the game it would be as follows; Long ago there was a war between mages that created monsters of elements called Golems (let's be honest the monsters you're fighting at the beginning look like elemental golems. I would call them golems.) The war left the world mostly barren and lifeless where hardly anything could grow. Small pockets of civilization remained, refusing to give up their traditional way of life before the war. The remaining mages created the sky disc you see in game. The only place where safety is guaranteed for people. You are a hero meant to cleanse the world of the corruption which remains from the war so that the barren wastelands could once again flourish with life. The wardens would exist as either bosses or mini bosses. I know little to nothing about making a game but I do know that plot is important.

The fastest ship in the game, the probe, would take hours to cross this empty void (or I assume, I didn't stick around to see how long it would actually take). Compare this to a normal playable map, where a probe could cross it in 20 seconds. It was fun to mess around, but yeah, definitely not something to actually play on.

Something almost all game developers will say to newcomers: "Don't commercialize your first project." Even if you think it turned out really well, it's normally a bad idea, and if it doesn't do well it will permanently affect your future games' marketing success. If you make a little test project just trying to figure out how the Unity editor works, you DEFINITELY don't try to commercialize it. Or it ends up like this, and ruins any potential future you had as a dev. Josh is right with his thought that this was simply a bunch of assets thrown together. You can find every art asset used, the day and night cycle system, the inventory system, the player controller system, the AI handler, the terrain tools, the particles, the LOD system, *everything* you can find on the asset store. It likely also used bought assets to deal with the "MMO" part of the system, all the way down to pre-made netcoding (there's a few of these out there). The amount of work the game designer had done with this project looks like it could very easily be done in a single afternoon. The fact that the developer decided to push this project on steam as a finished and commercial product shows that there is no pride in this. Nobody would present their project in this state and say "Yup, this is great and I think it is time to try to sell it" without undermining their conscience. *Edit* This actually might be made in Unreal. Either way, similar idea still applies. Bought (or free) assets, shoved together with next to zero game design to actually utilize said assets.

@@JoshStrifeHayes It's actually Egg here. Meg's my wife who gets dragged into games like Bloodlines of Prima so I can actually test them out and record footage, and she also helps out with other stuff with the channel. Here's a rough list of games, categorized by the reason why they might be a good game to check out for your show. I've put at least an hour into each one, too. "Retro-inspired MMORPGs": - Kaion Tale - 8BitMMO (Meg & I actually like this game occasionally, but it's definitely not top tier, polished game) Are these the same game?! - Dragon Awaken, Dragon Blood, Dragon Glory -- if I remember correctly, these 3 might be the same game listed 3 separate times on Steam, or at least they are identical enough to seem the same from memory Some random others: - Eternal Magic (a newer release.. not sure if you covered it or not, but the level of quality is such that my wife overheard the sound effect of a boar-like creature and asked why I was playing WoW classic without her.. and she's pretty much a noob to MMORPGs). - Ever Jane - it's unique and has a great community. The game itself.. I'll let you decide :) - Inferno Wizards - one of those small team (might be just one guy) projects. my wife completed the content included in the game, making it the only MMORPG that she has ever finished the main content for. There's some promise here, but the release on Steam - as is - is a bit underwhelming - Endless Online - it's still alive, and even the people I've talked to who still play it have told me that they wouldn't recommend it - Horse Riding Tales (PC version) - it came up as an MMORPG recommendation on Steam for me. Read some of the Steam discussions about issues PC users have had with this one. A bit of a stretch for "MMORPG", though A few I actually really enjoy: I love Neocron Evolution, Darkfall: Rise of Agon, and Mortal Online -- all 3 making my subjective top 20 favorite MMORPGs to play list -- but I know they all have issues. Not really "worst mmorpgs ever', but definitely a set of games that seem fitting for your series. I love the series. With Steam, you definitely won't run out of bad MMORPGs any time soon.

I can confirm at least the sky is a purchased asset. It's Enviro. I use it in the MMO I'm making as well because it's amazing and saves time making a whole day and night system. I've even worked with the creator of the sky asset to produce some custom results for it for my game and went to integrate it further in a way that actually effects the world when the weather changes etc. Buying assets to help imo isn't a bad thing 100%. They're helpful and at least the creator makes some sort of a living offering tools/services to those who need aid in making games but we're at least making 99% of the assets and implementing everything in a way that is our own. Games like these just hurt. It could be worse though, there are packs out there that have the fundamentals of a game genre and a demo scene which people have released as their own game for money lol As for the icons, I've seen them before too but I cannot remember where. Most likely a pack from an asset store. I hope they're not actually stolen XD Great vid as usual!

I think a comment reply made on the Steam Store page by a developer just shows what this game truly was: Dummmy [developer] Posted: 6 May, 2020 @ 3:47pm Thanks for the good review! This feedback is what makes us destroy other game devs, we instantly listen and implement. It’s nice to get something that isn't a one liner. A few of your concerns are fixed in the next patch and others will make it to the next one. I plan on taking most of your feedback to heart. Just two of us working on this and we are gamers. It’s been a challenge to not make it too hardcore. We both play Rust, DayZ and a lot of hardcore games so balance has not been easy. Agility augments projectile speed and movement speed so much I’ve had to nerf it twice. Maybe I can give lower levels an extra speed buff till they reach higher levels. Then we are cutting quest goals in half and doubling harvestable spawns. This is temporary until the new world and quest are finished being built. Will also test today doubling hunger and thirst and turning energy regen up. The two of us plan to spend the rest of our lives working on some variation of this game. One of our favorite games, WoW has been around for 20 years. That should be an easy goal. We have already spent 3 years on the game, and we just started the grind. We have double and triple downed on doing this forever. I work in construction by trade and I just put back 100$ a month and keep the servers running. Remember the next time a game shuts servers down because of cost, mine are still running for the 2 other players LOL I hope we can win you back one day. You probably won't recognize the game in the slightest, even if you try a month from now. One day we will become monsters of a game thanks to feedback like this.
