To be fair, to complete the main quest, you only need to do a few hand crafted dungeons, that are not as convoluted. You can refuse any quest that sends you to a random dungeon and just do other types instead.

To give a more mathematical comparison for the map sizes... Skyrim's map is 37 sq km. Daggerfall's map is 161,600 sq km. You could fit the entire map of Skyrim onto the Daggerfall map ~4360 times. Daggerfall is only about 25% smaller than the actual UK.

I never played Daggerfall because i'm a console player. But is the quantity of the map on scale with the quilty of the content, and no repetitive content?

@@Gary-kn6wb Haven't played it myself, but from what I can tell/have heard, not even a little. Daggerfall is almost entirely procedurally generated. There are hand-crafted quests, but not a load. The usual main quest, guild quests, so on. Most of the content, however, is procedural towns, with procedural quests, with procedural rewards.

Josh, the map is not really random for each playthrough like a roguelike. Instead, Bethesda randomly generated the world only once and used the generated output. Basically, it's like No Man's Sky instead of Hades. The devs randomly generated the entire world. But everyone played on the same world. The loot you found is random however.

Fun fact about Daggerfall's story: All of the endings are canon. All of the events in the endings occurred. This also leads to the orcs being playable in Morrowind.

All the endings including the ones that are mutually exclusive somehow. All three powers of the Illiac bay were the sole victor of the whole thing, but also none of them were as third parties got what they wanted instead. And none of the people involved remember what really happened anyway 🐲💥

Yes you can buy spells without being a member. You can also train one or two magic skills in temples. If you do not want to join the mages guild, the Temple of Julianos offers most of the same options.

Watching Josh only use autosave as someone who has only dabbled in Daggerfall I just had a feeling he would get soft locked. I learned after my first soft lock to always manually save a separate file that's not the autosave at the entrance of dungeons so I could load back outside just in case some bad shit happened inside lol

I'm 25 years old and found this game when I was like 17, I fell in love with this game as my favorite elder scrolls game. The mechanics are second to none in the series. I played the dosbox version which did have mouse scrolling and a 3D map.

15:45 Oh he forgot to get the dungeon entrances mod when he switched over to the current version of unity. So now instead of exiting from the castle its now the generic hole in the ground xD 42:38 Someone in chat finally told him that materials affect the chance to hit, and in this case I think Iron is -10% ? so low skill and an iron weapon is just going to wreck any chance of hitting 3:26:10 ooooooh noooooo. Temples only cure diseases not poison (unless you have the mod for that)

As an actual Daggerfall expert (been playing it a lot on DosBox before Unity came out), it was hard to watch Josh being so sure last part that he is using as clean of a Unity version, as you can get. He was so sure about so many features from the mods and vise versa (e.g. 3d map was in the original). Sucks a little that his first experience was with mods, but it's fun anyways.

@@TheRetifox Have you seen the base Unity version and the amount of options for customization it provides? You also kinda have to play the game raw for a bit to know which mods you'll want. Unless it's about graphic mods, which i can understand installing beforehand, but even then he is using an outdated version of that mod (something that wouldn't happen had he knew it was a mod and installed it himself).

@@annakonda6289 Not at all! The problem was that Josh had no idea that he even had mods, a lot of them are on vastly outdated versions. Some things he attributed to base Unity version and confidently told everyone that (like player controlled travel). He then updated the remake itself thinking that those mods were integrated and broke some of them. I would have 0 problems if in the beginning he explained that "i wanted to lnstall these mods for my first playthrough", because then he would know why certain functions don't work and what he added.

If you'll be playing, there are tons of mods that improve QoL without changing the overall gameplay. There's a mini-map and hot bar. Plus many other immersion mods, like better lighting, birds, and see through windows for interiors.

You prob won't read this Josh, but to get into the mages guild you just need any magic and I think that includes restoration, you can get that trained at the temple you are a member of, like you have been doing blunt. Also restoration means you will be able to heal, I think the temple may even sell you restoration spells.

If I Remember and i know its been quite a bit since you played this. But mage guild won't let people join if they don't have magic skill 22 in one of the magic skills and at least 4 in another. Also your rep needs to be positive or neutral with them. Some temples cause you to lose rep with them. So you will have to run some peasant quests with them with one of the guys near the entrance.

He mentioned several times in the stream that he has a "bad" character because stream picked it by answering char gen questions. He was clearly doubting whether his character was the right choice. The poison just gave him an excuse to start over. The two things people were suggesting that he ignored were: stay in the dungeon and just use the hammer until the poison runs out and just try walking to the nearest location. I think he just latched onto using this as an opportunity to start a new character.

Good stuff to listen while on my own DF playthrough, perfect winter time game. I recommend combining the "camp out" version of travel with on foot bits every now and then because its immersive and you will get hunting and fighting opportunities as you go. Just don't feel bad about speeding it up with fast travel. gl &hf!

It was obvious that Josh had character choice regrets and used the poison damage situation to justify starting over. He could have just stayed in the dungeon and used the warhammer as a weapon so that health was restored. By the time he found the giant the poison would have worn off. As for the lack of magic skills: Stendarr trains Restoration and Restoration allows cure poison and healing skills. To be fair though, Rogue is meant to use stealth and stealth gameplay is not the most exciting to watch on stream. I usually play stealth characters in Daggerfall, no magic (because magic makes the game too easy), and it is very powerful but much slower paced. That "Answer 10 Questions to Choose Your Class" option is garbage: you almost always end up being some kind of thief (with no ability to use plate armor) unless you know which answers to pick since thief is the default if your answers don't strongly align with warrior or wizard.

@Swagkitten1234 Sure thing! Basically, the procedural generation was created and then run only *once*, during development. So dungeons and other placements can look random cause a computer did them, but they never change. No roguelike elements really, everybody plays in the same, static world. Only randomised things are which quests you get and where quest objectives spawn into, and not much else if I remember correctly. 🙂

Nothing wrong with the character. Having your magic skills be miscellaneous is totally valid, since they don't trigger levelling up. He just needed to train a magic skill or two at the temple of stendarr. You don't need plate armor because everything dies really easily once you get your weapon skill up. I often play no armor at all, hand-to-hand, no magic schools. The difficulty with DF is not the character choice.
