In the year 1795, Barnabas tells Joshua to shoot him with 6 silver bullets in the heart, when he goes to his coffin. Joshua realizes that Barnabas was his only surviving son, he then tells Ben to confine him to his coffin with a cross on the inside and chains on the outside.

I watched this episode for the very first time last night, after viewing the entire 1795 storyline. This episode reaches almost Shakespearean epicness. Dark Shadows was often dismissed as "just another soap opera". Maybe a little different than others because of the gothic storyline. But the level of acting and the intense drama of this episode, had me riveted. Lou Edmonds and Jonathan Frid acted this beautifully. Together with the entire storyline, this is one of the best DS episodes.

Inspector Spinda Well, look at Daniel(1840) and Edward. Daniel was senile and Edward cared more about money than his own family. Joshua had believed he no longer had feelings, but in this scene, you see him dying by inches with each moment he spends with his son. His lost son. He can do nothing for him except either destroy or confine him and it's killing him. Louis Edmonds at his best. And Frid feeds well on the exchange and turns it outward into Barnabas' own barely confined pain.

Johnny Depp may have been a fan of the original show but his movie was too far away from the original series and any true dark shadows fans like myself will see that they took a gothic soap opera and turned it into a comedy even though Johnny said he'd keep it like the original series.
@inspectorspinda

I was more bothered by the plot. I tone I could help dealt with. But if you really think, it is impossible to keep the general original plot, and have barnabas come in, in a first film and have it be good. there is simply too much backstory to be given with vicky and the house and family, and the focus will be all off, which is what happened for the movie.

In my own personal head Canon I'd like to believe Joshua had one more secret. Daniel was adopted by Millicent's parents and was in reality the son of Jeremiah and Laura Stockridge. Jeremiah was so upset by his wife's death Joshua gave the boy to cousins to raise and thus the original storyline of the Collins branch in the 60's being Jeremiah's descendents is still true.

When Ezra Braithewaite came to Collinwood during the lead-up to the 1897 storyline, David answered the door and Ezra asked to see David's "Uncle Barnabas." David corrected him, saying Barnabas was his cousin. But actually Barnabas was pretty much everybody's uncle. Joshua said he would adopt Daniel. If he did, that made Barnabas and Daniel brothers, and thus Barnabas was the uncle of the first Quentin and Gabriel; the great-uncle of Gabriel's son who was the father of Judith, Edward, the second Quentin, and Carl; the great-great-uncle of Jamison, Nora, Lenore, and Lenore's brother; the great-great-great uncle of Elizabeth and Roger; and the great-great-great-great uncle of Carolyn, David, Tom, Chris, and Amy. Another interesting fact is that clearly I have too much free time.

I started watching DS in 1968; my whole 6th grade class rushed home to watch it. Barnabas scared us in fact, all of the vampires in the show were so terrifying that I slept with my rosary around my neck at night. One boy I remember, who wasn't Catholic nor did he have even a plain cross, told our class that he simply slept at night with his fingers shaped in the shape of a cross every night. Our favorite episodes were the costumed ones from the past. Years ago, the Sci FYI channel showed the whole series. Now on streaming and DVD, looking back, I now am grateful for having viewed some of the finest in television programming in my lifetime during the 1960s through 1970s with nighttime soaps taking over later on.

Apparently, there was another time in their lives when they quarreled with each other, I gathered! There was a brief conversation in the scene where Barnabas was sick and close to death. Barnabas says something about when Joshua was wounded (in a Rev. War battle, I'm guessing) in the war. He says that they promised each other that they would never quarrel again! It was where Joshua expresses some regret about their more recent quarrel. I picked up on that, and guessed that at some time in the past, there had been some static between them! Barnabas must've been a older child or mid-late teen then, and being at war time only about 15 or 20 years before. Anyway, that was something I surmised on my own, by listening to what the characters were saying in that scene! I don't know if anyone else picked up on that or not?

Astraldragon1 Yes, he even tried to say that he loved Barnabas, but was stopped because of Barnabas's own love and fear of his father's life. Joshua died inside as his son rejected his love, you could see it. If I were Joshua, I would have forced Barnabas into an embrace and held him as long as I could.

If only Joshua could have destroyed Barnabas. Maybe in time his broken heart would have mended. But, his love was stronger than his faith to do what was right. Poor Barnabas. He hated what he was

you should have showed the last part of this where Joshua tells Ben that he has his freedom and that he id giving him $500. A lot of money back in those days. I remember the 1841 story line where ben is old and has a grand daughter. They should have done a story line about Ben and what happened after he got his freedom just to tie it together. Maybe have Barnabas visit Ben's grave and raise his spirit to tell him what is was happening then before he and Julia went back to that time. Also Barnabas could have found out what happened to his dear friend after he was chained up.

I was 5 years old when I watched how Josette jumped from Widows Hill. I learned what death was that morning of the Sci-Fi Channel rerun. Everything else afterward in this storyline of DS was just as powerful. Decades later, I can say I spent several nights and days in the real house called Collinwood. Forever grateful for the living and the ghosts who led me there and here. In this time, the parallel time, and every time beyond....

Frid had to remain in the coffin after Edmunds closed the lid for the entire scene between Edmonds, and David,. Unlike his character Frid needed air. Of course in those days the audience wouldn’t notice, since they also had no means to “review” such things as is now possible, thus enabling details of that sort to be taken notice of.

Well of course: and that at least, both Barnabas and then Joshua had enough consideration to free Ben and had enough consideration to admit that Barnabas is a bad person in killing anybody and instead of Joshua is to shoot Barnabas in the heart just as Barnabas wanted it to be so, Joshua had Ben to chained up Barnabas up in the coffin.

They could also annul if the marriage was fraudulent (had "no right basis") -- for example, if one partner was a purported Christian at the time of nuptials, but turned out not to be one, or was a witch, a Gypsy, or even "a man who took woman's dress" and deceived a male partner.

I wasn't either I was born in 1969 and the show ended when i was 2. I was fortunate enough though that my local ABC station showed it in the late 70's to early 80's ( i was 9 - 12) as filler between The Edge of Night and The Mike Douglas Show in the 4:30 - 5:00pm time slot. Granted they only showed from Barnabas coming on the show to the end of the 1840 time line but it was still most of the series. Now I have the DVD set and have watched It a few times.
