By now you've heard about one of the biggest magic book releases of the year: Joshua Jay's Talk About Tricks by ‪@VanishingIncMagic‬ . This is an INCREDIBLE reference set of magic spanning 12+ years of different creators and types of magic. It's well worth your time and investment, but I have some ideas about how you investigate if you're just not sure yet.
📚 This episode is sponsored by Don's Magic & Books, and he's offering $15 off Talk About Tricks at his site when you buy this week using code "TALK" at ⭐ bit.ly/TalkAboutTricksDon * ⭐
🛒 If Don runs out of stock, you can get it straight from from the publisher at bit.ly/TalkAboutTricks
I received this book as a review copy from Vanishing Inc. - I do my best to remain unbiased - I just wanted you to know.
*When you buy through links in video descriptions, I may earn an affiliate commission, which helps me continue to produce quality video content. Thanks in advance for your support!

Looks like amazing books! I agree with the index, but I can live with it. Oh man, don’t tell me I could have saved $250 with my already paid for Genii. Lol. You know I have to have the book anyway. Looking online is not good enough for me. I have to touch the book and have it available at a fingers touch. Great review! Thank you! I’m jealous you got your copy already. The only good thing for me is my copy getting hear the day after my wife and oldest daughter leave for Alaska. Now I won’t get caught buying more books. Now to save up for my conventions next year. 1. The Senior Tour (St Louis) 2. Magifest 3. S.A.M. in New Orleans 4. All Things Magic If I can sneak 1 or two in I will.

Fun review, Jeff! I just received my copy of the set yesterday. They look wonderful, but I doubt I'll be laying bed reading them, or, if so, that'll be how I'll be found with a crushed chest:-). I completely agree in regards to the category index. This annoys me no end. Also, even though I have a complete run of MAGIC, it is great to have all of these columns in one place.

Great and honest review as always. I would love to get my hands on these volumes and consider myself a serious student... but I really can't bring myself to drop 250 bucks on it. At least not now. I'm hoping that because it's Josh's book and published through his company that it stays in print for a while or returns for another print run periodically. Valid point about the index. That would drive me nuts! Also, a big pet peeve I've brought up about other books (and I thought you were going there for a minute with the scale) is how obnoxiously large the volumes are. As long as they were breaking it up into two slipcased volumes, why not go a little further and break it into 3 or even 4 much smaller books? Much easier to handle on the couch, in bed, or even in a book holder at the table. Anyhow, keep up the great reviews!

I understand your thoughts on breaking it up, but the more hard covers and DJs, the higher the price 🤷

Nice review. I just ordered the set and it's on the way. When i placed the order from VI, they put a pdf of the index in my downloads section. The pdf is searchable, which really helps with the index problem you pointed out in the review.

I know they're enormous, but I haven't loved any of the tricks that Joshua Jay has been sharing on social media. Also, as a Canadian, due to duties and the exchange rate, these will cost more like $350. Finally, I primarily use my books as references, and so giant volumes with a low quality index are much much less useful than they otherwise would be. This has me leaning towards the Genii solution you proposed. Thanks!

I don't like books that big. You can't flip through them casually. I'm more drawn to monographs by a single magician, or books around a single theme or issue. Regardless of how good the content is, it's just too diverse -- there'd be way too much in a collection like that that I wouldn't be interested in to justify the cost. I'd be happy if someone gave it to me as a gift, but I'm never spending $250 of my own hard earned money on it. I enjoyed the review though.
