Thank you for, as always, an interesting video (Y) And what a great friend, Kyla, and I love how Anebele just tried to eat something new with an open mind. (It's not always easy to make children eat new things :D) I've always been amazed how much we can learn about our own country and culture from watching from a foreigner's view. It's a great way to learn, and learn to take critics as a positive thing and something to evolve from, even to agree to disagree from. This is not to Kyla or the Youngs, but more what I've learned from watching from a lot of documentaries and recent years youtube videos from the USA: I know, it's not for all to travel to countries far away, and experience their culture first hand, but more Americans should watch more documentaries from European countries, and especially Scandinavia, and learn that the "social-democratic" hell they've been taught from FOX/GOP is "quite different" from the realities here, not that everything is perfect, but too many have absolutely no clue about the realities pro-and con's. And just like eating something new for the first time, you've only heard about, it often doesn't meet your expectations, and often it's a positive surprise, especially if you do it with an open mind. "Try it on Tuesday", should be in every week plan in schools and families (Y)

There are over 600 words in the English language, that comes from Danish, although they originate from old Norse. The most common ones are words like window, take, sick, egg, knife. You can see a list by searching on "List of English words of Old Norse origin" on Wikipedia.

To be precise it is actually 139 words exactly in English that are derived from old norse. 600 is a little to much im not sure what you base that on

Yes, and the fusion between these two already closely related Germanic languages ( just 3 - 4 centuries apart!) - Old English ( or Anglo-Saxon) and Old Norse completely restructured and greatly simplified the highly complicated, heavily inflected and "synthetic" "English" language, as it transistioned into the more analytical Middle English, where a fixed word order and prepositons would now give meaning to a sentence, within the span of only 100 - 200 years - a type of English where modern day English speaking peoples ( including Scandinavians! ) can at least start to make some sense of it. Prior to this massive language mixing (Old) English had had a much more free word order and grammatical structure that was more similar to modern day German with cases for nouns and their articles, 3 genders, verbs that were conjugated according to grammatical person ( both singular & plural! ) and adjectives that were inflected according to the gender and number of the noun that they were associated with. Check out this brilliant video from Langfocus, which explains these deep influences in much more detail and how they are believed to have come about. kzbin.info/www/bejne/eXWkhmaKpdqhra8
@Bjowolf23 жыл бұрын
@@anders9646 No, it's way more than that, and many basic words were already very similar (cognates) between Old English and the closely related (!) Old Norse, but these mutual words were often given a Norse twist over time - e.g. sweostor (/ G Schwester). --> sister / D & N søster / S syster & do(c)htor ( / G Tochtor) --> daughter / D & N datter / S dotter

You Can actually find a grid system in Denmark - in Fredericia city center!! Its built within a earthwork and moat system, and built in a way so that if invaded the soldiers could shoot canons down through the streets at enemies!! I’ve lived in Fredericia ( inside the earthworks) for a few years, and loooove the city.. because you can live literally downtown, with shops and restaurants right around the corner, but the entire earthwork/moat system is built as a city park, and at one end of the city there’s the beach.. you get the best of everything… So if you haven’t visited Fredericia yet, you should!!!!

You guys have to consider the danger of going viral. Because you come across as really nice people, and sooner or later you'll have a shit storm of attention ;-) My compliments for an interesting video, as usual touching on many interesting sides of life, in a quite gentle, yet illuminated way. Good on you, and thank you all for nice input/output. And I should apologize on behalf of my language. You're doing good just by trying. (You ARE doing quite well!) Actually I think it is about time... More specifically, pronouncing words in slow motion. Just like practicing a piece of music, and I know you guys are musical, I hear it in your tones of voice. So there! Being trilingual (Danish, Swedish & English) I have long considered this to be the problem.. You have to learn at a pace or speed, that is in touch with your present stage. If you take it from where you stand, and just take one step - and the right step! - at the time, you can only go foreward. If you force yourself, you get it wrong, and later have to come back to correct, which is much harder than getting it right the first time... I believe this realization is a big thing in the Camino... What I mean is: learn in a zen way: Be there, be where you are, be aware... I myself have learned a little russian, and I can sing in brazilian portuguese, according to two Brazilian people I met today, who even commended my pronunciation. In school we had "sproglaboratorium" - language lab - which I believe is an american invention. We had tape recorders playing the french. We could pause and rewind ten seconds with a one button push and play back instantly. The teacher would listen in and tell us to listen carefully, if we got it wrong. SO! 1: Listen as carefully as if your were trying to get the name of a foreigner that you have fallen madly in love with. 2: Put your tongue where it never went before, to make the weird sounds you just heard. But do it like a child playing with noises! 3: Maybe even record yourself, and be playful about it! Fool around with sound, like there's no tomorrow - or just nobody listening... This is my advice for anyone wanting to be understood by people speaking the second most difficult language in the world or something like that.
