This looks like the ultimate general purpose radio! It'll handle whatever crazy flying machine you throw at it with ease. Also in regards to potentiometer gimbals wearing out, I've found that it is absolutely the plastic stick-centering mechanism that wears out, not the potentiometer itself, as long as the manufacturer hasn't cheaped out on the potentiometer. I've had the same modified Devo 10 radio for at least 5 years, the stick-centering mechanism had visible divots/indents from where it was making contact. I added metal plates to it and now the sticks are back to centering just fine.

Yeah I'm sure it's all down to, like most things, quality (of the pot and the surrounding hardware). I've had a JR radio for the better part of 20 years that still works great, and is still very accurate. And one should also consider that most of us don't put a radio through JB levels of everyday use.... BUT you also tend to get what you pay for and since everyone is so amazed that the T16 costs what it costs..... corners may have been cut in this area, and on that basis his concerns are probably legit.

Well the original Taranis was a rip-off (and upgrade) of the Turnigy 9x which as I recall is the radio that openTX was originally written for (called open9x at the time). And back then many people were calling the Turnigy 9x a rip-off of the JR PCM9X. Frankly, at a glance its hard to tell the difference between an early Taranis and the JR PCM9X. Also, Frsky got their start by selling TX modules (not full radios) running their ACCST protocol which is functionally a ripoff of Futaba's FASST protocol at a much MUCH lower price point than the Futaba was back then. This industry has a long history of cloning and then whining about being cloned. Kinda hard to care at this point.

What interesting post ... Yes the 9x did cash in on the old JR form for the case and of course JR introduced the plug in module with the Propo series back in the late 80's - buts that where similarities end. Second comparing FrSky ACCST to FAAST is to be honest a bit off !! You only have to compare the hopping protocol and the number slots it uses ... Futaba in fact had to keep re-inventing theirs to try and keep up !! As did Spektrum when the two slot protocol was shown to be limited.
@adamhixon5 жыл бұрын
@@solentlifeuk Some of the early ACCST receivers could even be bound to Futaba radios. I'm not sure if this was a deal worked out with Futaba or a rip-off. But I'm guessing the latter. And as for the JR, yes I was talking about to look and feel of the radio. I wouldn't say that a 2.4 ghz was a rip off of a 72 mhz tech. Ultimately I'm glad all this cloning goes on. As a kid (or even young adult) I could never afford to get into RC. All I could do was look at magazines and drool. It was Chinese competition that allowed me to do it. The Turnigy 9x was my first radio and I loved it for many years. Now I have a Taranis and love it as well.

The reason the X9D needs a balance bar is because its based on a 35 MHz JR which had a long telescopic ariel which balanced the radio. Now the X9D doesn't need that ariel as its 2.4 GHz and so it doesn't balance without a balance bar whereas the Futaba this radio is based on was always 2.4 GHz and so it balances.

I can (and do) run everything but CRSF on this, net investment is $165 (using sale pricing) for the radio, M7 Hall effect gimbals, and the IRX4 module, and I couldn't be happier with this setup. The only point I'm torn on is when I have to switch to CRSF, I'll probably find myself also having to consolidate to my FrSky receivers and CRSF receivers instead of running my whymsical mix of FlySky and FrSky on cheap quads.

The tilting gimbals have been around since the 90's, possibly longer. Futaba, Multiplex and JR all used them. Jeti and Weatronic may have even used them. Futaba currently uses them in their 18 series controllers. The T16 gimbals are a straight rip of the Futaba 18 series gimbals. Also, the pots are high end Alps..the same used in Futaba. They will last a lot longer than a typical cheap pots used in most inexpensive controllers. I have an original non plus Taranis from the very first batch. Its like #140 or something. I did not replace the gimbals until about a year ago, and the pots were still fine after thousands of hours. The longevity of the pots also depends on how well you care for the device. Keep it away from dust and dirt to prevent the posts getting dirty. Yes, dust and dirt WILL make its way into the radio and pots, and the gimbals are the primary path for this to happen. I have never seen people that take less care of their radios than I have seen in the mini quad world. It's no surprise they wear out on them. I have also seen the internals of the T16...while they look fine build quality wise on the electronic assemblies, the plastics overall appear as if they need some attention. This is apparent even on the exterior. The fit and finish overall seems to be lacking. However, these are minor issues considering its a $150, and would be happy to own/use one regardless (as I will when they arrive). Lets face it. The Taranis isn't exactly the highest quality radio either! It has similar deficiencies in the plastics. That goes for some of the "high-end" radios as well. Some of the offerings from Spektrum, Futaba, JR dont exactly feel like a prime radio either.

Great review...maybe something to consider to replace my X9E
@Krizon45 жыл бұрын
I am sure that someone already commented on that, but nevertheless. The balance bar is needed only for radios that were built for 40mhz / 75mhz analog. Those had long metal antenna that balanced the radio. With switch to 2.4ghz, balance bar was needed for those old design, converted radios, such as Taranis, using old JR molds. Radios designed for 2.4ghz from scratch usualy do have the eyelet in correct place already.

One thing to take into consideration is that the Jumper TX most likely won't support FrSky's upcoming ACCESS radio-protocol (which probably will be exclusive to FrSky's own transmitters). I'm guessing that it might take some time before someone eventually reverse-engineers that protocol too but in the meantime it might be a wise decision to stick to FrSky's native transmitters if you care about future compatibility with FrSky's recievers.

One major disadvantage of T16 is BF Lua does not work with the multi module. Even hacking the original Lua source to recognize T16 it will not work. You need to buy XJT module to use BF Lua. Also Companion dose not support T16, so it is not able to customize the firmware, like “No Heli” and so on. It seems T16 had copied the hardware of X10S (maybe this is another reason why Frsky companied), so it is possible to flash T16 with X10S firmware with minor issues (pots and sliders are reversed). If you flash T16 with X10S firmware no need to hack Lua source to work, but still need to use XJT module.

Hei Joshua. If you read this, your attention to this will help anybody who bought T16 recently! I've seen that a lot of people asked you why their Jumper can't work with Open TX Companion and they get the error on the remote side "Storage Warning - Bad Radio Data". You've told them that this happens because one of their modules use the internal multi-protocol radio, which is incompatible with their radio. Well, you're just partially right. When you made the review you probably used Open TX Companion 2.2.3 or 2.2.4 which works fine with your solution, but starting from 2.3.0 and 2.3.1 including, when you are writing ANY model (without any Internal Radio configuration set), will trigger the storage incompatible warning above and nothing set on the companion side will not work to fix this. This happens because the 2.3.x version removed the "multimodule" option from the Horus X10 radio profile (which you use to set a profile for the Jumper T16) and it triggers this warning, disregarding the module you are trying to write, without even with no Radio option (internal or external) configured. Please check this yourself, as it happened only recently since companion 2.3.0 was released. That is why you have so many complaints on your video regarding this error.

To me the ultimate hack would be adding a switch to the screen input power internally on the radio and wiring that to one of the harder to use momentary switches. When you don't need the screen, tap the switch and toggle power off to the screen. When you need it, bump the same switch and you get the awesome screen. I suspect it might be possible to print some mounts that would let you run some hall effect gimbals designed for a different radio, and this would really be an incredibly good contender.

20:00 if FrSky wants to compete, they need to make better radios. Innovation with ergonomics, function, and quality. They are considered as one of the best, so how could they let Jumper come in and take that from them? Capitalism is supposed to make products better, not make companies wage war against each other. FrSky knows it's downfalls, but will they listen to their customers? That said, kudos to Jumper for making a great product. Hopefully they are able to improve as well.

Ok, I'm not a drone guy, I like sailboats and sailplanes. Been out for quite a while and am now looking for new radio gear. I want all of my new sailboats and sailplanes to return telemetry so this looks like a good choice. Now I need to find a receiver that can return telemetry but that's open enough that I can add my own telemetry modules. Looking for the basics plus roll so I can see how much the sailboat is leaning to port or starboard. So is the T16 a good choice and what would be a good receiver to use that can cover my needs? On a different note, I'm hoping to also at FPV to the sailboat. Mainly for recording but I would be fun to actually sail watching from the skippers perspective. Thanks

Hi Josh, Just purchased a T16 as your review was very positive. As my DX8 gen1 doesn't support a vario telemetry the T16 looks like a good move etc. I have a FrSky G-RX8 with in built vario/Alt. So I go to bind and set "MULTI - FrSky - D16. Then scroll down to "Bind" press enter and SHOULD get a sub menu 'Telemetry ch1-8 ON, Telemetry ch1-8 OFF' etc. Pressing enter to accept that and then it binds... So I realised my T16 didn't offer that sub menu during binding, but looking at the (nearly complete) T16 manual - it shows the same sub menu... Don't know why I don't get that option? It did bind the Tx and Rx but could not find "New Sensors" Therefore no telemetry.? Do you get that sub menu on your T16 on binding.....? Firmware is 2.2.3 Any suggestions would be much appreciated! Many thanks Andy

I dont agree with copying Futaba but using openTX is no issue!!
@Clickbaiters5 жыл бұрын
I agree also but the core of the problem here is the relationship FrSky has formed with the OpenTX devs to such extent that FrSky has been supporting the team financially for a long time now. Now Frsky employs an OpenTX dev as a full time developer for them which is a huge conflict of interest in my view. The OpenTX team hasn't developed any software for any other radio brand besides Frsky in the past 5-6yrs, with good reason does FrSky feel like only they have rights to OpenTX but they don't, it's open source!!
@dewke675 жыл бұрын
@@Clickbaiters In the linux community it's very common for dev's to be paid employees of a company. The difference there is that they don't not support certain vendors. I love my x9d and will use it until it dies, but since I also use crossfire I will probably change radios if FrSky continues to sabotage crossfire support in new models.
@Clickbaiters5 жыл бұрын
@@dewke67 I also enjoy my X7S and have zero plans to get rid of it at the momemt. I'm also looking forward to being able to update my firmware and get the new 'ACCESS' protocol. What worries me is that the whole point of open source software and the subsequent support of that software for the benefit of the community *seems* to now be exclusive to a manufacture. A genuine competitor has thrown their hat into the ring but had the doors shut on them, found a way around it which has in turn upset (documented) the OpenTX team even more. FrSky has been incredible for the hobby and is very responsive to the end users' wants and desires. That doesn't give them exclusive rights to open source software no matter how much they pumped into it! They will have people turn against them if they don't stop it. Just like people dumped their Spektrum and Futaba radios when the X9D exploded into the scene. People were tired of the same old games radio manufacturers had been playing since the 80's. FrSky didn't have an issue when they "copied" and undercut Crossfire when they introduced the R9 system! Which I also own BTW.

Hello Joshua! I got this transmitter already after seeing your video, and quite happy about the overall feeling. One question though.. How to bind this Jumper T16 to the Radiolink R9DS kind of receivers which uses DSSS and FHSS protocols? I am somehow unable to bind those receivers in SFHSS option in "MULTI". Do I have to choose some other protocol for FHSS / DSSS?
@FilipRadelic5 жыл бұрын
You're the first person that mentioned the screen not being able to turn off, thank you. That's a pretty big deal with such a big color screen. I mean it's nice but I'm gonna use it to setup my models once and then just to switch between them. Gimbals are not a deal breaker for me, they are probably gonna release a "T16 Plus" with hall effect gimbals and they will be available as a part that you can use on this radio. What might be a deal breaker to me is that they haven't been able to release it with an internal 4in1 despite teasing it and putting it up for preorder as such, then changing it later. Thanks OpenTX for being helpful. Let's hope the community solves this (like they did with external 4in1 module) and Jumper implements it in their next radio (T16 Plus?). That said, my Q X7 has had too many issues in its first 11 months and this one is the current favorite to replace it once I lose patience. FrSky is full of crap (I'd understand if Futaba complained but they probably don't feel threatened) and I hate that OpenTX is so high up their asses. Time for a new open source radio firmware? JumperTX source is of course also available so even if Jumper abandons updating it (which I don't see happening unless FrSky manages to shut them down), someone will pull in the OpenTX changes into that project and share it.

Got Jumper T16 Plus with Hall Sensor gimbals a week ago, for $160! Whoever got older version - can get a set of 2 gimbals for only $15 !!! While the CNC gimbals for Taranis X9D are $20 a piece (they are better quality though, but come on! $20 - that is way too expensive). T16 works perfect. The quality WAY BETTER than Taranis X9D Plus which I own for last 4 years or so, but not even close to build quality of my buddy's Horus 10S. Rubber inserts on the sides and bottom makes it feel comfier than Horus 10S though, but gimbals are of less quality (not CNC-ed). Case and buttons feel cheaper. Rotary encoder (instead of lame buttons) and color screen makes it way easier to configure than X9D with its lame buttons. The ONLY DISADVANTAGE (for myself) against X9D is battery capacity. Tray is not big enough to fit a decent LiPo for a thirsty colorful LCD (2000mAh max what is available today fitting the battery tray). Have to charge it before every field day. Must do a built-in charger mod.
