I change this setting on every single one of my quads, but I've finally decided it's important enough to recommend that everybody else do it to. In fact, I wonder if this setting is one of the main reasons some people feel Betaflight flies worse than other firmwares like Butterflight, FlightOne, and so forth.

Do you need 3.3.3 to try this? Seems like there was a fix in the latest version for the d-term transition. And is maybe related to this git hub post github.com/betaflight/betaflight/issues/5657

You may want to not set Transition all the way to 0.01 in that case.

I can tell you this definitely works I started out with my set point at 1 I've worked it up to about 1.14 transition is at 0.01 and my quad feels much much smoother and more connected. I've had it this way for about the last 4 months and I feel like my progression has improved due to this setting.👍👍

100% agree. Oddly I was just thinking about this as I had to flash a receiver and bardwell helped me out but I fast forwarded through 85% of chit chat. Wow Joshua, this is fantastic, and might I say, perfectly timed for me personally. I don't know where along the line I was told (maybe it was my leader 120 stock pids?) but I was by default setting up everything I owned to SP Weight 2 and Trans to .25 and I've had this "disconnected" feeling lately, and not having the slightest idea what to do about it. I can't wait to try this. Bless you, man, for having the nads to come right out and say "TRY THIS, IT WAS A BUG, AND IT CAN BE CORRECTED BY DOING THIS.....". So greatful, man. Many many thanks.

Dear Joshua, normally leave your channel on in the background while I do stuff. Always very informative. I recently got a new quad built and was really loving it. I felt that it just wasn't as zippy as my 2" which is a beast. I was like, fuck it, why not try this......massive difference! Like night and day! I would seriously suggest this to anyone who feels their quad should be a bit more zippy. My new 3" was awesome, I absolutely love it now! I've been trying to hang upside down smoothly for the last two weeks, I just ripped an 850 3s in like 3 mins, most of which was inverted. Was the first time I could thrash my quad about like I wanted it to. Thank you so much!

This was a great video. I appreciate the front loading and the specificity of the topic. I saved a PID profile with the recommended settings and was flying within an hour; flew 6 packs and crashed on almost every one. Despite this, I'm pleased I took this recommendation and can't wait to get out and fly tomorrow as the quad felt significantly better. I was crashing because I wasn't used to the responsiveness; a problem I am happy to have.

Thanks for another great video. I’ve always run setpoint of 1.0 and transition of around .6 but after watching this I decided to try .1 transition and my quad just flipped out on first roll almost like a desync combined with rates set to 2000 degrees/sec. I’m using Betaflight 3.3.2 on my Hyperlow Vert Freestyle and it flies great with my original tune. I think folks need to be careful if they already have a tight tune. My pgains are at 54 and 70 for roll and pitch with close to stock d term. I’d recommend setting pids back to stock before trying this.

Great video man , i was wondering when someone was gonna talk about this! So another interesting observation on this topic using black box to tune: was getting bounce back at the end of flips & rolls (even D term oscillation sometimes) that I couldn't seem to clean up with typical pid tuning. At that time I was 1.0 on setpoint weight and .2 on transition. Upped the transition to 1.0 and the bounce back was gone! True it was a little too smooth however ended up at .8 on transition and now flips and rolls are spot on and matching RC Command very nicely at the end of those maneuvers with no bounce back. Unbelievable the impact these seemingly harmless little sliders actually have on flight performance/characteristics.

Finaly some more info about D setpoint, nicely done! I think you schould also point out that with a 3" quad or smaller high D setpoint weight,or not enough setpoint transition can cause the quad to keep flipping(flip of dead??) when the sick is banged very hard. My XJB145 almost shook itself out of existance with a D setpoint W of 1.4 and setpoint transition of 0 , same is true for the stock betaflight settings,it stutters and schakes even in a hover with stock pids and the motors are hot. This was felt and heard way more in acro mode ofcourse. Have my D gains at 18/19 and D setpoint at 1, transition at 0.4 and it flies nice now. Just wanted to point that out, keep it up man!

I brought up this question in a previous livestream and you brought it up in video, since I have been using 1.0 and earlier bf versions .3 but have been setting higher but lost quad so lately haven't got the best up to date BF settings but 1 and .35 for freestyle, and 1 .6 for later versions but I have been using Butterflight . I have done a lot of research on the D term setpoint and weight values and should make a video of the findings.

Great video, as always. Keep it up! I increased my set-point weight a few weeks ago, and you're totally right. It's way better! I could not lower the set-point transition all the way, however. I tried, but it twitched and made bad sounds when I tried to turn, almost as if the FC was loose and giggling around. I increased the set-point transition to 0.2 and the problem went away. That's on a 6S racing build with Betaflight 3.3.1.

Interesting...I guess I knew what setpoint weight did, but I was a bit off on the exacts of the transition. I set the weight to 0, which I thought was essentially disabling it, then I have been setting the transition to one, because I also thought that would disable it...been racing, and didn't want that slow transition at the end of a movement. I had no idea the transition at 1 was damning my center stick feel...thanks for the great video!!!

Yep after playing with various setting over the year I settled on set point weight at 1.0 and trans at around .33. I've been telling anyone who'll listen they should play around with their rates and setting more often than the once a year that some others are stating... as I say "the worst that will happen is you don't like it and you go back to how you had it, but you just might find something that you like better", either because you've become a better pilot and or you want to try a different style of flying. I actually have 3 different rates on my 3 position switch, and even though they vary by only up to one point, depending on what I'm doing it makes a difference.

Now that I've had a chance to fly it I think I will be keeping these new settings. Much better than what I had....but that is after only 3 flights spread across two quads in wind, so a certain amount of placebo effect might still be in play.
