You actually nailed @ about 7:20 mark for me. Music preference is hugely influential on which you will prefer. For me, the Senn just don't work for what I end up listening to. They can't reach far enough into the low end for electronic and don't work well for heavier metal, that tends to be much busier, most of the time especially when you do something like Lacuna Coil where there are duets that blended into the music. But when I want to listen to a certain style of music I have them on standby for that purpose. 6xx or whatever version have work great for things like Portishead or Tom Waits or Bob Dylan, which frequently listen to as well. And I make these kinds of comment every time for a reason. The Senn 6xx, 600, 650s are all so gushed over so much. If you tell somebody new to headphones these are the ones to buy and they are like me, you end up leaving a bad taste in their mouth over audiophile gear. So people need to know they don't fit everyone. If that makes any sense. Great review though Josh.

Agreed. I am new to the audio hobby, and bought into the HD650/6xx hype train. The whole time, i was never satisfied. I felt something is missing with these headphones. I kept wanting more from them. Then few days ago I got HE-4xx. Oh man, the depth of the soundstage blew me away, and the bass extension brought life to the music. I finally figured out what I felt was missing from the 6xx. They just lack the soundstage depth and the bass extension. They sounded flat in comparison to he-4xx. Like what you said, I too kinda wish people would stop over hyping the hd600 line as if it's a must have cans for anyone to get into the audio hobby.

The response graph shows a range of 10-1000hz as a large portion because that is over 5 octaves of the audio spectrum displayed, conversely 7000hz-14000hz is only 1 octave, so it does not constitute nearly as much of the audio spectrum. 1 octave (doe-ray-me-fah-so-lah-de-doe) doubles the frequency... it's not linear. 20-40hz is an octave, as is 5k-10k hz. I felt it needed said, because it's very important... the response graph is not misleading, it is representative of the audio spectrum.

This review is a few years old now, but my 2 cents on the K7XX as I've owned them for a like 4 years or more now. They are great sounding, and as mentioned in this video the sound stage is quite large. I'm not a pro, or fortunate enough to buy/own many pairs of headphones so I can't compare them to others, but I do enjoy them. A few things to note, the cord that comes with them isn't great so I personally have made a couple different ones (not too tough just a little careful soldiering) if you do try not to make one too heavy or too long. I also don't have the largest dome (as well as not having any hair) so the fitment is very loose out of the box, the ear cups want to sag down, to get around that I bough a cheap strap cushion and it works fine I'm sure you could also make one from some memory foam if you wanted. Side note I do also use a DAC/amp with them so that could skew my review some.

DAMN imo from what ive seen the truest comparison between them is how they would react with which "gear" is driving them and the fun to be had from it......the sound is obviously different off top in regards to the aesthetic of the sound signature. I need to buy some 6XX, ive owned the K7XX for 3+ years now. I find it to be very enjoyable for its staging for gaming- podcasts etc. The audio is very immersive something that i know the 6XX cant come close to. But to the same regard its really how/where they differ in most of where the K7XX benefits from its immersive staging and your ability to locate each instrument or etc in the audio mixing. Im positive the 6XX makes up for with its overall quality/precision by comparison. Talking throughout the entire sound spectrum. Its nice though bc when you mess with the hi-gain features of my schiit stack for example. you can already see the suble nuances and differences from the difference in the gain. K7XX mids and highs do get bridged where they fell off in high-gain......as far as presence or prominence. Also in regards to both i hear Both the K7XX and the 6XX highly favor "neutral power" with as much as they can handle ideal, and ideally want it fed through tubes, i hear these really favor tubes. Which at 200$ cans, to think you could spend upwards of 1000$+ on tube setups and get seemingly endless fun from 200$ entry cans. Massdrop really figured it out, getting repeat customers to buy their various tube amps, as well as tubes. If anything i DO need 6XX so i can cross reference a tube setup, time to hit up SCHIIT.

For the 6xx (I have 650) for the amplification I would disagree, I also have the he 4xx, dt990, 668B, B&W P7 and I would have to say that the 6xx/650 are more on the easy side of driving them and that even lower end gear drives them better than any other of those headphones, I have tried the 650 on my galaxy S8 and on my HP G5 250 laptop and I have to say that these sound A LOT better over the others, for example the HE 4XX on the phone is missing a lot of the low end and the sound isn't as big and the detail and imaging is as good but the hd 6xx sounded quite close to my HP-A4BL amp/dac that I have, the 650 take VERY well to low end quipment unlike other headphones, I have them plugged in the laptop and they sound still very good for what it is. Also for me the 650 sound quite wide, they aren't as wide as HE 4xx ofcourse but they can be very intimate and wide depending on what the music/game/movie/anime is trying to do with the sound, but with some songs that were recorded in big settings the sound is big and spacious.
@hangover48335 жыл бұрын
Quite agree. I'm new to this audio hobby. I spent hours testing to try to figure out if using an amp grants thst much superior sound on hd6xx compared to using smartphones. And my conclusion is, if you have a flagship phone of the past year or so, the sound would be very good, very close to a dedicated amp/dac combo. Now I think a lot of the so called "audiophiles" are a lot of bullshit. They make the impression that you need to spend a lot of money on audio gear to make the headphones sound good. Some even says changing headphone cables will change the sound. ....
@dnd63795 жыл бұрын
@@hangover4833 Amplification works differently on every headphone, so you can't say it is the same for every headphone. I have hd 650 which sounds great on my phone but he4xx sucks. Also superlux 668B sucks on a phone because they have cheap drivers, they need more refinement. You can hear a difference between any amp out there. I had an aune x1s, fostex HP-A4BL and a fiio e10k and I could hear the differences between all of them. And I say that the audiophile community isn't full of shit. If you haven't tested it you can't say it isn't true. Some people say that they can hear the difference between cables on speakers as well and I can't say that isn't true until I test it myself. Also it depends on what expensive is to you and hoe much you are willing to invest. I think an aune x1s is very well priced and others would think it's expensive.

@@dnd6379 i know different amp will sound different. That's not my point. My point is, since playing from my Note 8 already sounds pretty damn close to my dedicated decent entry-level amp/dac (vali 2 and modi 2 multibit), i doubt upgrading amp/dac will make as much of a difference as some audiophiles make it out to be. Of course sound will be improved, just like how I noticed the improvement of sound from my phone to my amp/dac, but it took me at least 30 mins A/B testing to figure out exactly how was sound improved, while making sure it's not just placebo effect. So my hypothesis is that upgrading amp/dac will have similar slight improvement to sound. Will the improvement be noticeable? Probably. Will the difference be so big that you can immediately tell how exactly the sound signature differs? Probably not for most people. But some audiophiles make it seems that different amp/dacs make the sound so much different that it is life changing, at least eliminating those really cheap poor built amp/dacs. Will I upgrade my gears in the future given the chance? Probably. But is it logical to spend that much money on amp/dac for that tiny bit of sound improvement? Probably not. And that's why this is a hobby. Also, i didn't say audiophile community is full of shit. I said it has a lot of bullshit. It has a lot of good information, but at the same time, a lot of nonsense. Different cables makes headphones sound so much different? Yeah right. Will cables make a difference? Probably. Will it be noticeable, hmmmm , maybe only to the select few whose ear sensitivity is blessed by an angel.
@dnd63795 жыл бұрын
@@hangover4833 Now you are backtracking of what you said about cables, just wanted to point that out. Going from "Some even says changing headphone cables will change the sound" to "Will cables make a difference? Probably.". But besides that if you listen closely you can easily hear differences between amps and when you pay attention to sound you can easily hear the difference when you use them daily. But at the end of they day speakers are still better so you might wanna give that a try as well. I just got my Jamo S803 and running them through a Denon AVR-X1500H. Human hearing is 20h to 20khz and that is standard and most younglings can hear that, so you do not have to blessed or anything. Just don't go to clubs too often or blast music too loud too often and you are good.

Had the K7XX, massive soundstage, like wow, probably the biggest I've ever heard... it's like they added some steroids to it. Overall sound was good too, very defined, crystaline. The only problem I found with these headphones is that they tend to have loose driver wires (by faulty design), and can only be fixed with soldering... (which it's very uncomfortable to do if you don't have some experience).

My HD650, as good as it is.... The gaming comments are dead on. Distance is always a question. Imaging is decent, but I still refer to it as 3 blob. Rear imaging is not good. DT1990 was better for me in gaming. You can locate people much better in arena/moba fps. One of the reasons I'm considering buying one used again, but the price is getting close to the used HD800 bracket.

The hd800 soundstage/imaging is good for music if you like how it sounds, it's one of my favorite headphones but I hear that it is not good for gaming. I've heard people saying that it doesn't accurately place footsteps around you, I don't play any games with them so I couldn't tell you from experience but if your considering purchasing it mostly for gaming you may want to look into it.
@DMN39016 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Already owned a pair in the past and SDR'ed it. Overall, it's an upgrade for me personally. The main issue the hd800 has is that the soundstage is so large that imaging can be an issue at times.

I've never understood the popularity of the 6's. Why would anyone want an open-back headphone for a "close" experience? Just get a M40X and have portability as an extra... But you've given a good rundown between these two headphones, well reviewed. I'm not much of a vocal fan so it's obviously the K7XX for me. If you're curious about more of the "wide" sound, take a look at the Pinnacle P1. It's the IEM version of the 7's when it comes to soundstage.

Hd 650 do not sound closed. This video is a review of one person. Making it open back is also good to make an airy experience. Your ears can't breath as well with closed headphones and you can start sweating around your ears, but with open back ones you can't or it is harder. There are many reasons to go with open back even if it doesn't change the sound much or at all. DT990 are wide sounding but them being open backed doesn't have anything to do with audio but air flow. Dynamic drivers blow audio in 1 way so with most dynamic driver headphones you won't have a difference if they are closed or open. Planars blow both ways 50/50 so you will hear a big difference if they are open or closed. Hope this explanation helped you with understanding some of this. Have a great day and holidays.

@@hangover4833 Where do you have them plugged? Also for how long did you play with your HD 6xx/650 and what genre of music did you listen? After having the hd 650 for about just a week and using them daily for hours and hours and then switched back tk he 4xx I actually found that the hd 650 has the low end of any other headphone I had/have. Dt990 or he4xx bass sounded bloated compared to hd 650, it was okey until I got the 650 but I right away heard that the 650 sound the closest to real life out of any headphone I have heard till date. You need to drive them with a good amp to get the sub bass out. The 650 literarly sound as if you are the microphone that other people sing or play instruments to. You should check out Sessions from 17th ward - Strive or Covocaine and you will see what I mean. I can defenitely see why people would love them.

@@dnd6379 i run it through vali 2 and modi multibit. I know hd6xx has cleaner bass, but i don't mind a bit of bloatiness in exchange for more bass extension and quantity. The main thing that sells for me is the immersive soundstage of the he4xx. In terms of width (how wide the space sounds), i find it to be about the same as hd6xx. But when it comes to th depth (Z-axis), the he-4xx blows hd6xx out of the water. Listening to he4xx feels like you're in the room with live performance. Hd6xx sounds flat with singers whispering to your ears. People have different tastes. For my preference, i like the fun sounding and immersive experience of he4xx. I would probably only gonna use HD6xx for EDM music and songs with mainly vocals. Like you said, maybe better dac will bring more subbass to the hd6xx. But i doubt it makes much of a difference. Probably won't be able to hear much improvement with just listening casually. Probably need to criticality listening to hear the improvement. To me, that's not enough.

@@hangover4833 Hmm I guess this is where we differ on this. I find the he4xx a bit bloated compared to hd 650 and not as detailed and not as full sounding as sennheisers. I also wouldn't say hd 650 are missing in the bass region, they go as low but other headphones have more bass (not going lower) and that's the difference. I used to love bassy stuff but in a few years of testing a bunch of headphones and having different amps I saw that the HD 650 is by far the best, specially in terms of sound reproduction. If you want bass you should just get a subwoofer and speakers if that is viable.

HD6XX is the only headphone i've owned that was a distortion cannon. Tried it on the GSX1000 so underpowered it wasnt great but worked (3.5mm), The Element low & high gain (low, med volumes) distortion king (6.3mm), Jotunhiem = distortion (6.3mm), Jotunhiem Balanced...... It worked fine. I should point out that i was listening to Metal. The Hd660s same sources no issues, HD600 same sources no issues. (ath-ad2000x, 1000x & K712 pro no issues). Ended up swapping the cable from massdrop HD6XX (3.5mm with 6.3mm adaptor) to Sennheiser HD650 cable (Ends in 6.3mm) & probliem solved. Turns out it was the adaptor causing issues. But to be honest even with it working fine now i don't really like it in general.
