I got a trail of blood going up the keyboard as I did it too many times practicing. Long nails help so I grew them but then found my nails catching black keys during songs lol. Swings and roundabouts. The best thing I got from this video is basically don’t do it over and over. Save it for performances. Thanks for this. Saved my skin. Literally 😂

My music teacher was great at performing glissando. He would lay his forefinger on its side on the top white keys and gently but with great speed he would fly down all of the keys. Meanwhile he would hold the piano lid with his left hand ready to slam down when his finger reached the bottom keys, he then bounced off his chair and marched off announcing lesson over and off you go!😆

use the same techniques as above - if you are going down, let your thumb be on the bottom note, then let the pinkie slide down. I saw someone play the Waldstein about 8 years ago, then immediately went home and practice octave glissandos. If you work at it, it can definitely become comfortable, although the first time I tried it, it was really awkward!

My stomach has turned to soup watching this. I played a glissando with my thumb nail age about 8. God it hurt. 45 years later I'm here trying to get it right .... but feeling ill at attempting again. Think I'll go with the sweater sleeve approach 😀

It is possible. I can't do it myself as I don't have the hand dexterity, but I heard you are suppose to stretch your hand out to an octave between the thumb and pinky and for the right hand let the thumb and pinky slide down sort of like you would with a regular glissando using the very tip of the thumb and pinky. I believe it would be vice versa with the left hand. I am trying glissando thirds myself. The hungarian rhapsody no. 15 uses glissando thirds in an ossia difficule segment.

yes, it is not THAT difficult as it might sound. of course it needs some practice to just hold a stable octave in your hand while sliding down or up the keyboard, but as i just commented in one of robert estrins videos, it is also important to have your keyboard well regulated so that the keys still move very smoothly when some sideway force apply to them, which obviously happens when playing glissandos. just ask your piano technician, mine did a great work, it was just like night and day!
