A lot of expats like to blame the Dutch for their own lack of proficiency in Dutch. It's because of the Dutch! They always speak English! Well, they don't if you don't cooperate. Truth is that many expats really don't care about the language. No time, no effort, weird sentence constructions that nobody understands. Anybody can learn enough in a few months to be able to have a conversation about anything. Even Brits & Americans.

@@ChrisMcloviification to be fair , amsterdam is like the least dutch part of the country culturally. in fact , whenever i go to amsterdam most people that work there don't speak Dutch, to me that feels a bit odd but im not complaining since i like the English language , but i live in a rural area on the other side of the country and so many people around me feel a bit weird for having to switch over to english and some people i know cant even speak English ( tho i am of the opinion that people that are dutch and don't speak English are of low quality upbringing , but i get the confusion when enterting a place that doesnt speak the language of the country it is in.) Amsterdam also has some specific laws in place purely in amsterdam that the rest of the country doesn't have. Bike culture is also different there , here some people walk on the bike lanes and we just get out the way of them. but in amsterdam , if you get on the bike lane , they will not stop and just straight up drive into you.

A point about learning the language. If you intend to move to the Netherlands as a permanent resident you actually HAVE to learn the language unless you are a citizen of the EU or 5 other countries, it's part of the civic integration process. (Some other minor exceptions also apply)

One correction about the weather. From the last 4 summers were 3 of them wayyyyy to dry especially this summer. Last year summer was a bit better with some rain periods. And the winters are not that cold anymore. Greetings from Apeldoorn!

Me and my friends compared prices in Amsterdam to other North American and Asian cities: for Americans, it's just not that expensive in general, it's approximately what it costs a month in Salt Lake City, Utah because the prices in US are already incredibly ridiculous, you can even save 30% more than what it takes in NYC. If you live in Vancouver, BC or Shanghai, you won't notice the price that much at all.

The old-Dutch food on its own is very simple and straightforward, but we luckily have a lot of different types of restaurants and exotic supermarkets. Born in de 70s, I grew up on aardappelen-groente-vlees (potato-vegetable-meat), with a (homemade) soup as a starter and with chocolade vla (chocolate custard) as toetje (dessert). But nowadays most people I know, no longer eat like that everyday. Also, due to our colonial history, our cuisine is heavily influenced by Indonesian cuisine, even when I was still a kid and probably even before that, our diets did not solely consist of bland food. Heck, if you use herbs and spices, even stamppot has a lot of flavor.

I also grew up in the 70's with Dutch classics like Nasi Goreng, Chili con Carne and Spaghetti. But also potatoes and I have come to re-appreciate potato based dishes. It's not hot or spicy, but I don't agree it's bland. It's the potatoes that have gotten more bland but with a little effort I can still find tasty potatoes.

@@DenUitvreter Good gravy by the potatoes. And buy good potatoes. Also if you have cooked to much of them ( i do it deliberately), bake them up the next day with some onions, spices/herbs. You can even bake a tomato, chillipepper, mushrooms even throw an egg at the end on it. Just what you like. It's all about seasoning. I also re-appreciate the simple meat -potato - vegetable dish, sometimes it's just all i want for dinner.

It's just that in comparison to pasta or rice a potato has at least as much taste to it. The sauce or whatever is another thing. But yes, a good potato with a simple gravy (just beef juice and butter basically) is great.

The Netherland - homey and there are several other reasons that would provide a soft landing over the aforementioned 10 reasons for anyone who would love to make the Netherland a home. Its' less hilly/mountanous topography, and the egalitarian lifestyle is personally a plus for me. It is not unusual to have a group of friends or persons come visiting or in a gathering and having no chairs to sit but while you went to fetch more chairs only to come back and find them graciously having helped themselves out sitting on the floor and say to you - "geef niet hoor, zit ook goed zo" LOL 😄. I see you excuse yourself a few time on this video when you think you get a little hard on the Dutch with your opinion but that way I think you lose a tint of the directness that is noted with the dutch way of life. Your Naija vibe is alive, love it.

As many others, I don’t quite agree on the last point. The Dutch kitchen in itself might not be spectacular, even though it certainly has its charms, when It comes to food variety, as in different types of kitchens, I think the Netherlands has a great offer. Just like you I live in Delft. If you want to see how many different types of restaurants we have to offer, just open any type of food delivery app. In Delft alone we have dozens of different restaurants.

First i thought here we go again what is wrong with my country but you are pretty positive about the Netherlands. Yes we learn our kids to swim at a young age so they can save them self when we have a flood or when they fall into the water. We learned to life with and respect the water . About the food real dutch food is gross like stamppot but back in the earky days the only thing we had was stamppot because it was easily made and didn't took that much time to prepare . Now we have tons of restaurants from all over the world like pizza, chinese ,mexican, japanese ,greek etc so if you love to prepare that and stand for hours in the kitchen you can get the ingrediënt in the supermarket of toko. About the weather you are so right but when we have sun you better have your airco on . I love the vibe you give and here we tolerante most things as long that you don't force it onto the people . Like religion we have churches, moskees etc all over the country and we accept allot over here which basicly makes the Netherlands an awesome country to life in.

About the food: you can make your food as interesting as you want. Not every Dutchie likes bland food (me, for example, I LOVE the spicier types of food), and then you have all sorts of cuisines in the Netherlands (especially in the big cities): Indonesian, Chinese, shoarma, Greek, Mediterranean, Mexican, Surinam, Indian & Pakistani, burgers, Turkish, Italian, French, Tex-Mex, Argentinian, seafood, Polish, British, and in some places even African! But if you don't like those restaurants, you can always cook your own meals at home :)

I agree that the original Dutch cuisine is not that experimental. It's based on efficiency. The staples are basically potatoes, seasonal veggies and some meat. Potatoes and veggies often mixed in a stamppot. I still love it. But as you mentioned we did import a lot of other cuisines because we are open minded. It might be hard to find fufu in the local grocery store, most of all outside of bigger cities, but I can go to the African store and get it there. I can go and get some traditional Chinese food and not the ones that are adapted to the European taste. It will probably taste like a cows rectum and it probably is. LOL But you can still get it. Dutchies love to travel and are willing to taste the local food in the countries they visit. But of course you can't buy Capibara meat in the stores, at least not yet.

@@phoebs69 wel as i am dutch i know how things work here. i live under the poverty line and i am fine with what i have. its more for the people who live in the middle income household. they have it harder then anyone else. they earn just enough not to get any benefits. and they earn not enough to live by. which is a problem. and wages have not being raised for a long time. well they minimum wages goes up twice a year. but thats nothing compare to what things costs in the netherlands. so thats a problem.

I live in Germany, just one hour from the Dutch-German border. What you said is so correct about the Netherlands. The Dutch are 100% in the right to roast our incompetence in Germany, haha. However, I think Iceland, Norway and Switzerland are far expensive than the Netherlands. 😂 I really hope you enjoy your stay in the Netherlands. From what I have experienced the Dutch are super awesome human beings. I am Dutch and agree completely with your points. And to be honest, I could compose a much less sweet list, like the fact that the country is in transformation in the direction of the worst of the USA without the best. For instance the political goal (and already in place) to abolish the pension age of 65 and replace it with 78. So when you're not rich, which is a minority so that's why they get away with it, you'll work till you drop.The whole tendency is rich means rights. It's scary as hell. Things like legalisation of euthanasia which was save when the NL was a welfare state will become creepy with rights (to life) dependent on wealth, for instance.

I disagree with your last point about the food. Yes the typical dutch food is not very interesting but we have adopted food from over the world. I think in most dutch home these days you won't just find dutch meals. You'll find chinese, turkish, italian, mexican, surinam influences, etc. Even if you look at restaurants there is a huge variety in the type of food we like from italian, greek, turkish, mexican, argentinian food. So I think we as Dutch people do have a lot of variety food wise because of our love and adoption of food from other countries instead of sticking to our own cuisine.

I’m 55 and as a kid I ate a lot more bami and nasi than stamppot, so you can say that Indonesian food is a big part of our food culture for a long long time. And you’re right, so much variety available all over the country food wise, it’s pretty unique. And there’s also the great street food you can’t find anywhere else. I wouldn’t last more then a few weeks abroad I’m afraid.

Thanks Rianneke for your point. I think I agree with you too. I know that there are varieties of meals available here in the Netherlands. I was referring mostly to the Dutch cuisine. Although it's can be seen as a healthy diet, it might not be the most interesting meal for a food lover. But I get your point, there are still variety of cuisines that have been adopted by Dutchies.

This is exactly what I wanted to say. The Dutch cuisine at itself isn't as sophisticated as e.g. the French or Italian cuisine. The variaty of restaurants and foods you can get however is huge. It ranges from asian cuisines, european cuisines, african cuisines to latin american cuisines. I've been travelling for a longer period and the moste 'boring' thing was that i often didn't encounter the variety of food options that I'm used to. Coming back in the Netherlands was a breath of fresh air because I had al the different cuisines available again.

Well done...........!! .....there are a lot of food options in the NL as you can read from some of the comments, but there are a lot of other "cuisines" (mostly from the colonial past: Indonesia, Suriname, but also Morrocan, Turkish etc.) integrated in many Dutch households.......

I am born and raised in the Netherlands and am black. Not speaking Dutch is Absolut no problem at all if you are white, white expats and their children get accepted and accepted everywhere but if you have a skin tone you mostly get the treatment of being a poor low life aslym / fortune seeker and people block you from acces to stuff by saying, you need to be competent / fluent in Dutch, with kids for example if you bring them to a good school / child care / sportclubs dominated by white children they will round up 1001 excuses: 1: We are full but we can put you on the waiting list, 2: you need to speak fluent Dutch, 3: We can, what school your child at: example: HAVO (140) answer ahh we require VWO level (145) I grew up in the 80ties it kinda looks it is all better now but the Dutch call themselves tolerant but the way the white Dutch handle tolerance is just ignoring other groups and bar them. This was demonstrated recently when Ukrainian refugees came they have acces to everything and people take them in their house and money from day 1 Muslim and black immigrants certainly do not get this treatment or help!

@@jksinorbit Most expensive area's are forced to also build social housing and every city is forced to allocate a fixed % of those housing to refugee seekers, this means if a city is behind they must give those houses away to asylum seekers, especially now since our refugee centers are overflooded.

@@barbudo12 Yeah that's indeed horrible, though I do feel like some use what some people's ancestors did in the past is sometimes used as an excuse to make Western nations feel guilty about what some dead people in the past have done. In all fairness, the Western countries these days are among the most open minded in the world and human rights and equality is way better here than in any Asian or African country (sometimes even to a toxic level towards locals) so I do feel it's unfair to blame us for dead people's actions while outside of the West they laugh in your face when you call them racist or 'woke' stuff. And skin color doesn't mean anything in this regard aswell, if Africa was the dominating power they would have done the exact same (slavery has always existed there aswell even to this day, and Sumer in Mesopotania around 3500 BC was the first recorded nation to do it). So while I do aggree on the faults of many 'dead white guys', I think many should look at how well certain minority groups are treated in these 'non-white countries' compared to Western nations and they should reflect upon the past of what any nation in the entire human history has done. It's just how humans are, power makes drunk and instead of blaming Western countries for their past people should praise them for the progress they've made and how this positive change has influenced the world and how far we've come to the way of being a united species because we're all the same. ♥
