Hey Jouelzy, I have a very important question so I hope you see this. I’ve been seeing over and over people talking about dismantling capitalism and how toxic it is but I wanted to know... what are we trying to replace it with ? Is it that we’re aiming for a socialist/communist society or some other new way to operate the economy ? I’m just curious because while I know the end goal I for equality I’m not sure exactly what type of society we’re aiming for. I’m still fairly new to trying to understand all this stuff so please bare with me if my question sounds silly

I always rolled my eyes a little when I heard the term "girlboss" and even "girl power" rubs me the wrong way. If the systems of power are not changing, the idea of girl power is just putting lipstick on a pig. Power is power, adding "girl" in front of it implies that it is "other" and true power and dominance in a white supremacist, patriarchal, capitalistic society will never define power as "other." Am I making sense? Ethier way, you look stunning as always.

I think it’s about how one views the term. For example to me black power is a sense of self within our community it has nothing to do with power in the white supremacy structure. Because you can gain a lot of power in the world but lack power within oneself. I don’t know about girl power because I don’t say that. But to me that is what black power means to me, not an “other” but a sense of self in which many in our community has lacked in trying to subscribe to European norms.

In this discussion I am reminded of Elizabeth Holmes, the CEO of Theranos, and how she did everything from dressing like Steve Jobs and frying her voice down an octave or two to portray this image of authority and power all while her company was falling apart behind the scenes. She is a perfect example of this whole girlboss scheme.

One of my besties loves the "self-help" genre of books. She is white, and when she finished Lean In she said and I quote "this is some rich white girl bullsh*t". I also happened to be at the Becoming book tour night in Brooklyn when Michelle Obama slipped up and said "that sh*t don't work" when discussing Lean In. The Girl Boss thing felt off to me from my introduction to it, and it's funny how so many of those women who were the champions of the movement fell their boss pedestal in real life off shortly after their books came out. I found out Rachel Hollis who writes those Girl, ... books that smack you in the face at Target has made a lucrative career speaking at MLM conventions. MLM's that are actually owned by Mormons, which like many religions have deep roots in misogyny, but also is a religion created by a scammer. Just a tangles web of con artists.

I’ve rewatched this twice! Excellent topic and discussion. I really struggle with our society’s expectation to hustle and be this, that and more. And the devaluation of rest, self care and family time. Working in corporate America, you’re expected to give of yourself no matter the detriment. And some companies “perform “ caring about their employees but the true care is just on the bottom line. Capitalism. 🙄

1. You look especially gorgeous in this video. 2. Sitting in my car was part of my daily after work self care routine and now that I barely leave my house I don’t have that unwind and reflect time anymore and it shows. 3. The idea of Girl Boss is not inherently problematic, it’s the way it’s applied in the more high profile arenas. It’s like the higher your profile the more you pull from the patriarchal playbook to stay on top because you don’t want to put held up as an example of failure. Also the low key fame of girl boss has alluring trappings like brunches and speaking engagements, profiles and articles written about you makes it hard to see your BS if your community isn’t keeping you in check.

Such a great listen! I love your point about how women aspire to be “girl bosses” who then continue to perpetuate oppressive patriarchal ideals such as not giving adequate maternity/paternity leave, giving fair raises, adequate recognition of the hard work your staff puts in to make your business a success and most importantly paying people fair wages(especially when the business is thriving and these so called girl bosses can afford to pay a higher salary). This is literally what women advocate for all the time about fair wages/wage gap,and fair business practices from owners and supervisors. So it is really disheartening to see women finally enter these higher roles and just continue to perpetuate these toxic corporate practices.

That mother sounds like she has narcissistic personality disorder. They love babies. They see them as a reflection of themselves and shower affection. As soon as the child is around 3-6 and starts exhibiting a personality or pushing back and having opinions and their own will the narc parent loses interest. Which really confuses the child who got used to being love bombed. Everything from then on becomes conditional love. You do what I say or you’re a disappointment. You’re a reflection of me and must never damage my image. And the affection thereafter is doled out only in public when witnesses are around to perform for.

Ouch. That hurt. My mom put someone else's kids above her own. She praises them when I did everything by the book. We didn't have food in our fridge from Sunday to Wednesday. We were yelled at to wake up and pray at 3am by my dad. My dad constantly beraided my mom. I told my mom to leave my dad at the age of probably 10. I don't know if they were narcs , bipolar , schizo, ....I just know there was constant fighting and us kids walked on eggshells. I really wish we were put into foster care. I was diagnosed with manic depression and the meds are terrible. If I was in a stable environment growing up, I would have flourished. I was # 2 on the Spanish Honor Society , numerous other awards and then I turned to stripping to support myself. Sent my family money when they needed it and they kicked me to the curb when I needed their help after Hurricane Katrina.I just started talking to my mom again after no contact for yearsss. We adressed alot of issues but she still oversteps her boundaries sometimes. She told someone who she knows bullied me growing up my personal business regarding my son. Should I just cut off all ties with them? Sometimes I don't know if they are more of a help or a hindrance.

It helps a bit to know when you read up on their diagnoses and understand why they’re like that. Just know they can never love you like you need to be loved. It’s impossible so don’t harbour hope. Also no matter your age no contact is still best. My mom is a narcissistic personality disorder too and I’ve noticed the months I go no contact are my happiest. Contact raises my anxiety. And she acts nice at first to lower my guard but eventually she attacks like a snake bite out of nowhere. They can’t help it. Any niceness is to draw you back under their influence. They are energy vampires and you should not allow them to feed on you or expose any kid you have to them unsupervised. Cut ties if you can.
