Journalist Annie Jacobsen is well known for her best sellers The Pentagon's Brain, Area 51 and Operation Paperclip. In her latest book, First Platoon, she investigates "warfare, good and evil in the age of biometrics, the technology that would allow the government to identify anyone, anywhere, at any time." Come for a discussion about the Pentagon's abilities to utilize iris scans, fingerprint scans, voice patterning, detection by odor, gait, and more to track human patterns, as well as the ethical questions raised by what Ms. Jacobsen calls "a burgeoning surveillance state."
This is a story that starts off close and goes very big. The initial part of the story might sound familiar at first: It is about a platoon of mostly 19-year-old boys sent to Afghanistan, and an experience that ends abruptly in catastrophe. Their part of the story folds into the next: Inexorably linked to those soldiers and never comprehensively reported before is the U.S. Department of Defense’s quest to build the world’s most powerful biometrics database, with the power to identify, monitor, catalogue, and police people all over the world.
Based on hundreds of formerly classified documents, FOIA requests, and exclusive interviews, First Platoon is an investigative exposé by a master chronicler of government secrets. Jacobsen reveals a post-9/11 Pentagon whose identification machines have grown more capable than the humans who must make sense of them. She says it's a Pentagon so powerful it can cover up its own internal mistakes in pursuit of endless wars; and people are at its mercy, in the last moments before a fundamental change so complete it might be impossible to take back.
Annie Jacobsen is the author of the Pulitzer Prize-finalist in history The Pentagon’s Brain, the New York Times bestsellers Area 51 and Operation Paperclip, and other books. She was a contributing editor at the Los Angeles Times Magazine. A graduate of Princeton University, she lives in Los Angeles with her husband and two sons.

It appears that Annie Jacobsen is indeed a true journalist, intent on reporting the facts to increase our understanding. How I wish we had more real journalists today, whose objective is to inform and not propagate a narrative. Well done on choice of guest and interviewer, Commonwealth Club.

My grandfather was a US Army Air Force counter intelligence officer in the 1940s & 50s, stationed in Tuscon, Arizona. He was part of "Operation Paperclip", where they moved German scientists to the US after the war and started the US space program & NASA. He was also part a small team that recovered space craft and extraterrestrial beings, both deceased and alive. He kept military documents of these events. There have been many more events than just the one crash that most people now know about. After he was killed while working on a related case, my mother kept the documents. I found them in her files in 1987. And despite the multitude of warnings of fines and imprisonment stamped on the envelope, I read them, took them to my high school and showed my classmates. I was only 16 years old at the time and didn't fully understand the impact of what I'd come across. This was before we had the internet and before people had heard about the incident at Roswell, NM (It was actually in Corona, NM & a second crash site at Horse Mesa, NM, discovered in 1949). My grandfather had been involved in many covert activities during the war and after, what we now call "special access projects". He had informed my mom that ETs existed. He had trained her in remote viewing from a very early age, after realizing she had strong innate abilities. My mother still has much of the original documents that my grandfather had obtained. And she has worked directly with Senator Pell and his aide, US Navy Commander Scott Jones, who was a member of DARPA & part of "The Aviary", a secret US government group that would to discuss crash sites and extraterrestrial events. Extraterrestrial life forms do indeed exist and are here on our planet. And the US government has been lying to people about it because they don't want the technologies they are receiving to be available to the general public. It would disrupt all major industries. Especially the oil industry. They have zero point, clean unlimited energy available but won't release it because fossil fuels, coal would be obsolete. No one would pay for electricity, gas, etc. They are protecting the industries and the "elite", not the people. This is wrong on so many levels. But the truth is coming out.

You are so so lucky to have read them! I feel that if I read them so many of my questions would be answered by the truth. Did he ever say what form the ETs take to live amongst us? Are they human like? I do believe area 51 could solve the world's questions and conspiracies. I enjoyed your info. I've only been awake for 16 months and don't know how you've handled it for so long! With corona, birth certificate truths, immunizations, Bible, fermament , CIA, sex trafficking, the federal reserve, big farma, 911 and nasa I've been torn and twisted! I can ONLY pray the sheep find out the truth and soon!

I volunteered for the "BAT" course before deployment to iraq in 07 with 1bn/2d Marines. Thought it was amazing how much info I could log in, change, for any individual in the entire theater. Blood type, locations, known associates/relatives, etc. Little handheld guy that (if already logged by another unit) would pop up anything and everything about an individual through an iris scan, blood test, facial recog, etc. The "BAT" just stood for biometric automated toolset. Came in something about the size of a pistol case.

This Max guy is a bootlicker. Any time she points out the US military’s naive/nefarious schemes, he deflects to justify it. Btw Max, I don’t remember being asked if I was cool with giving up any of my rights to privacy for the sake of “the greater good.” The greater good is about cooperating with other nations and among our neighbors, not spying on and killing them. Love Annie Jacobsen’s very important work though! Everyone needs to learn about this. Thank you for sharing.

I realy love the stories Annie tells us. And the information she provides. Also I realy respect the fact that she comes on as a narrator of facts, and leave the opinions and judgement to the reader or the one listening. She gives you the story, the questions and set you to think for yourself to answer these. I watched this just now, february 2022. In Holland and Europe there is an upcoming debate about digital identity, pushed by the EU. And this makes me only more cautious about my privacy.

Since it is quasi-legal in many places to go through a person's trash, fingerprints or DNA (e.g. strands of hair) can be obtained without warrants being served, subject/suspect awareness, or consent. Regardless of your current political bent, imagine if the political party you don't like inherits these tools, methods, and databases and begins to leverage them against groups that you like or are sympathetic too. Some technology and tools are too powerful to keep only in the hands of the "good guys" forever....

Global warming and cooling is caused by the 240,000 year rotation of the galactic bulge with grand solar maximums occurring at perihelion and grand solar minimums at aphelion changing every 60,000 years. We are currently at event 201,(000) of the 240k rotation of the galactic bulge. But the real inconvenient truth about the galactic Milankovitch cycles causing our climate cycles is teh Precession of the 7 north stars because every 12,000 years our solar system passes thru the galaxies double torus electromagnetic gravitational center causing the END TIMES with EMP plasma burst and Z pinching Pillars of EM fire if you will, Oort cloud comet impacts and east to west tsunami mud flood Noah's floods if you will. It's a cycle and grade 5 science could debunk co2 caused climate cycles. cause and effect, closed loop and energy is neither created nor destroyed. On this planet. All energy in this galaxy comes from and or returns to the galactic Nucleus/Bulge. Covid like CO2 is a comfortable LIE built upon an inconvenient truth. The Baby Boomers who were born en mass 76 years ago are starting to die en mass from the usual suspects of seasonal FLu which leads to Pneumonia and old age. The MASK of the BEAST to Buy or Sell is a pretext for the heavy metal vacc + 5G FINAL SOLUTION depopulation before the conjunction of the planets causes cataclysms. It takes 10 years to develop a vacc IF and only IF you can isolate the virus. Which they can't because it is the Seasonal Flu and Baby Boom turning into Seniors Bust. Jesus loved all races because there is only one race the HUMAN race with only one minority the INDIVIDUAL human. Don't let yourselves be divided & conquered along race creed and religious lines. I saw it happen in three genocides perpetrated by the MATRIX Stream Media.

All of this candid discussion about a subject that is already in practice without any real protocol or procedural measures to prevent abuse of power...how do I know this so well? I'm walking in those exact shoes day in and day out. I've intuitively examined and observed this harassing torment and targeting for at least three years plus, thus far paying close attention to details, patterns, reactions, responses, etc. There's no other logical explanation for what I am subject to and what I go through as a target or victim of this extraordinary method of scrutinization, punishment and torture.

Both these people are thoughtful and knowledgeable. Especially Annie Jacobson, of course - this is her field of expertise. And both of them come across as real human beings. John Zipperer was a good moderator. Have saved this discussion so, hopefully, will get back to it. Need to take some notes. Sending good vibes to all fellow citizens concerned about mere citizens' vulnerability to a super-high tech government who is able to track us moment by moment. As recently as when I was young, it was not this way. In my Grandmother's day, people might never have to carry any ID with them. Some people had no idea of the exact date (or even year) of their birth. And they got along ok. We have traded a LOT for the benefits of Modern society.

Also about creating a better future for us all; I did hear on a video today called: Alice Waters: We Are What We Eat, and she had an idea for schools. She went to Berkeley in the early sixties and has this great idea about 45 minutes into that video. I hope you search for this video title and hear the idea. I think we should do her school/food idea! Check it out and I bet you’ll agree! She is very smart for an old lady! She is my hero for coming up with an idea like that for sure! for sure! America has been fascist since 1913 when Big Daddy Prescott Bush helped sneak in the Coup of the Federal Reserve and illegal Income Tax. It only got worse and worse after that. This " country " was built on murder, rape, theft, slavery and that was only on our shores. Then... Manifest Destiny. Our Karma is going to be Brutal!

In 2018-9, when "attempting" to impeach a president, the U.S. congress reminded us that taking private $ or doing ANY favors for personal gain while in public office was 100% an illegal conflict of interest. Not one person in the U.S.A. or indeed on the planet (aside from myself that I'm aware of) will ever dare state that simple, obvious fact. But if someone speaks ill of Mommy and Daddy-Government in any way, well then even throw-away lines are used to imply they have faults. Right at this moment, Mitch McConnell is continuing to protect capitalism from those filthy Heroic First Responders from gaining access to needed health care goinf on twenty years now. Not a peep from the American public. But oh, what _she said_ about Daddy....

It also brings up the subject of ownership. The AT&T case about our phone records being the property of the phone company, the mega databases of our on line activity that is data mined without our knowledge or consent (with the user agreements considered) is the property of the company who tracks us on the sly or the social media site we are using, brings the argument to the forefront of who owns our biometrics? We think we do but we also thought we owned our Apple Music library that we bought and paid for and stored on our MacBook, but Apple has proven that is a fallacy when they wiped out a users entire musical library not for some breach of contract on the users part but lease he was inadvertently caught up in someone else breach against Apple. Microsoft can wipe out your os if they chose to, if you install an app that competes with one of their apps or if you criticize the app online. We are headed toward not owning anything but "renting" it even thought we paid (or so we think) to purchase it at a purchase price upfront. Since the whole surveillance thing is about control/ownership of the entire fucking universe, who owns our biometrics is an upcoming fight. Which brings up the next train of questions. what happens when power that be (yes, singular) owns the universe? Then what?

Okay, I just got the part when Max Brooks claims that “there are clearly valuable arguments to be made on both sides” at 1300. How about this… Max, we "do not" have our DNA subjected to anyone unless ordered by a court of law, and actually charged for crime under a rule of law! And "not" do this incase someone may commit a crime…That's the dumbest argument!!!

Tech is running far faster than our ethics are. The last 4 years have shown how easily a fascist state can be put in place. When our lives can be mapped without our knowledge and as Snowden showed us the government has no intention of giving up the power its accrued. Secrecy does not serve the citizens now and FOIA needs to become universal with government information.
