@thirdcoinedge Жыл бұрын
@@lavenderlavender3952 I can't imagine what it must have been like to witness his return back in 2012. Putting a character who had been with involved with Sidious' plans since its inception, cast off as a loose end, now reintroduced into the mix of things was a brilliant idea, and it's unfortunate that Maul could not see the grand scope of the plan until the final episodes, being focused more on revenge and attaining enough power to get back on Sidious' good side. If we had gotten another season between the events of 6 & 7, we could have seen a transitory arc as Maul comes to realize the full extent of Sidious' plans as he escapes Sidious' tortures, with his appearance at the Siege of Mandalore being the culmination of this arc, unsuccessfully trying to stop these plans and prevent Sidious' domination. Not to say that his journey through the series wasn't excellent already, but it could've added more.

I couldn’t disagree more. This is just like Mark Hamill’s comments on the Sequel version of Luke Skywalker; that it’s a completely different character from the Luke of the Original Trilogy. Likewise, this Maul in Clone Wars has very little in common with the Maul in TPM. People call it a character arc that he changed so much from the trauma… but just like how Hamill criticized Luke giving up in the sequels… the way this Maul handles things is not characteristic of what the Maul in TPM would do. This one screams and rages, loses control, talks way too much and is far too animated in comparison to TPM. The Maul in TPM would not have gone mad after surviving the duel. He would have laid in wait calmly until his opportunity arose to come back and pursue vengeance. Sure he would have had rage, but it would be much more internal than external with screaming/mood swings etc.

It's honestly a pretty unique moment, not just in Star Wars, but in media in general. A nutty man shouting a warning about an evil wizard in control of government to soldiers and people who can theoretically stop it, it's a great concept that deserves to be re-used. Imagine if that happened in real life. If some homeless guy started shouting by the side of the road while he was being arrested, and a few days later the apocalypse actually happens.

@@Blutwind Its a testament to the growth of both characters. Obi Wan had gone from a Padawan helplessly watching his Master and being haunted by guilt for decades to one of the greatest Jedi of all times, able to put aside his emotions in service of the will of the force (which wanted him to protect and guide Luke towards his path) Maul was never going to win that fight. His anger, thirst for revenge and power clouded his judgement. It made him arrogantly think that he could kill master and apprentice with the same move. Had he been thinking clearly he'd have know Kenobi was bating him into a trap. But in his final moments we see just how far maul had grown. Such a good point! Maul never lost his dathomirian roots even though he was torn from his family at such a young age. He always longed for that belonging, especially after he lost his brother and eventually his home planet to Sidious. Evannova95 made a Versus video with Savage, and he summed it up pretty well. To paraphrase, given his experience as both a member of the Nightbrothers and a Sith Acolyte, (not the crappy show) it’s unlikely that he operates on zero thought. He’s not a completely mindless animal. Part of what makes him so dangerous is that he actually is a master of his chosen weapon. Dooku, Kenobi, and Anakin are all masters of a specific form of lightsaber combat. Savage isn’t, but he makes it up for being able to capitalize on the benefits of his Saberstaff. For an analogy, you could be the greatest martial artist in the world, but that doesn’t really help if your opponent has a fully automatic weapon and knows has to use it. (He elaborated on it in the video)

A broken man, born on a wasteland, raised in hatred, groomed to be an agent of darkness. Raised his entire life to desire power, to be a sith lord, only to be cast aside when a more powerful replacement was found. Bisected, alone and without direction, he lost his mind, barely surviving. Eventually he was given hope again, hope that he could be something greater, hope that he could forge his own destiny alongside his brother, hope that he can have his revenge against the one who took his legs, his place in the sith, his destiny: kenobi. Then, at the precipice of his success, he lost it all again, to the man who forced him into this path, his master, his guide: Darth Sidious. Betrayed by all and alone by circumstance, he was left only with one purpose: revenge. He sought to strike down all those who took everything from him, but at every turn he failed. At the end he sought to kill kenobi, at least he can suffer for everything, at least the man can have this much. Yet again, he fails. Struck down for one final time. The only solace is the promise of kenobi, that there will come a day when sidious will be struck down, one day. The man can die knowing that his revenge will occur, one day. A broken man, born on a wasteland, died with nothing, no friends, no family, no legs, no name. All he has left is a single word: Maul.

1:14:43 - 1:15:02 sums up why I love this character. One of the things I love about this character is as much as he tries to distance himself from the Sith he's trapped, their teachings are fundamentally burned into him, he always seeks power and is driven by his want for vengeance all the way up to his death, but the tragedy of him is further shown in the little moments where he does show traces of humanity. Moments like Savage's death, or his final big moment with Ezra on Dathomir, that whole bit really comes off like he is alone. Sure, he still wants to kill Kenobi, but part of him does want a meaningful connection with someone beyond that.

When Obi-Wan centered himself he kept up with Maul, in Rebels we see how Obi-Wan has grown far beyond Maul. We know that being emotionally off balance is a HUGE debuff for force users, both Sith and Jedi suffer in skill and power when they aren’t focused. Remember also that Ahsoka was trained by Anakin Skywalker, one of the most powerful and skilled Jedi to exist. The Jedi that had Obi-Wan on the back foot for the entire Mustafar duel, the Jedi that bested the amazing duelist that was Dooku on his own. We see that Anakin’s training with Ahsoka was intensive and consuming, she was taught by one of the best. @nirablackfire27922 жыл бұрын
Not pure evil. Both sides of the force are guilty of spilling innocent blood one way or another. Maul has a lot more layers to his life that I think calling him "pure evil" is over simplifying him. He's evil and therefore has evil tendencies because this is how he was taught. For the better half of his early life Maul was trained as a relentless killing machine for Sidious. You can't blame an attack dog for acting how it was raised. Pure evil is remorseless and gives no shits about anything but itself. And as we see how Maul turns out in Rebels it's very clear losing both his mother and brother have taken quite a toll on him. Once Sidious considered Maul useless, his whole life crumbled and he spent the rest of it trying to find some form of purpose. And he spiraled even further into fear and confusion the more Sidious took from him. That's not pure evil, that's desperation that's been turned into aggression.

After he lost Savage, all his hatred really covered the hole in his heart- notice how he reacts when Savage is injured and killed. He cared for his brother but didn't know how to do so. And when he meets Ezra, the first person he has talked to in years, he tries to use him to fill the gaping void. Maul might be evil, but beneath all that ingrained and tutored hate, all he was, was lonely.

I love Sam Witwer's work. I actually met him back at the Force Unleashed launch party in SF in 2008. His voice as Starkiller is iconic. So when I found out he was casted to voice Darth Maul, I was excited. And hearing the aggressive and low tone he puts on for Maul sells it for me. But I always find it awesome how when Sam Witwer says certain lines in certain tones like at 1:01:06 you can hear some Starkiller coming out.

Definitely one of the greatest Star Wars villains. He is up there with Vader, Sidious, Grievous, Thrawn, Dooku, Ventress, Boba Fett, Cad Bane, Durge, Abeloth, and the Yuuzhan Vong. Ray Park and Sam Witwer made him so legendary. My only question is how does Maul use the bathroom after his first defeat?

Vader, Sidious, Grievous, Thrawn. Hell of a list. Can’t say exactly how he uses the bathroom, but let’s just say that’s the main reason why he’s so mad at Kenobi😆

Same that's the power of grief and loss losing everything you stood for to 1 single person (Tbh I don't blame maul for wanting vengeance against Kenobi) and let's be real by the time it got to the siege of mandalore that's what maul truly wanted (other then revenge against Kenobi and preventing order 66 indirectly) to gain what he thought would of got if he didn't get cut in half all those years ago
@Darkwolf06592 жыл бұрын
Darth Maul is one of my absolute favorites based on stories. Before being cut in half, it felt like all he wanted was to kill as many Jedi as he could, but he was reckless which caused him defeat. After Savage found him, Maul felt more like a politician who would plan out attacks instead of being reckless which gave him so many victories. 2 more of my favorites based on stories is General Grievous and Galen Marek.
@joshhdebolt3 күн бұрын
I enjoyed every second of this. Mauls story is bitter. He was smart, powerful and much more. He knew how to do so much but always fell short, which was his destiny. Sidious only used him as a tool and even did so after he spared his life in this video. All of his potential was defeated by his pride. It seemed like when he was helping the Jedi fight outside of the temple you seen green flashes come from his red saber after contact. I think that meant there was a shine from the light side within him but could never gain a full bond. Mauls whole past and training is from the dark side and that something that can't change but maul shows on rare occasions a shine of the light side. I think he knew he would lose to kanobi on the last duel because he knew they both was betrayed but fought through their heart the whole way. Obi wan was the only one that could give his death the respect it deserved and for maul to understand even if you ain't on the same team, something's are the same. Really glad I watched this to give me more understanding of Darth maul ⚡

The crazy part is that if you’ve only watched the main series Star Wars movies, no shows or spin off movies like Solo, you’d only think he was just some edgy one off villain who died in Phantom menace after 5 minutes of screen time. The clone wars really saved his character, and his whole story is one of the best in the series. It’s a shame a lot of people who don’t watch the shows won’t ever be able to truly appreciate Maul.

41:56 Maul: "Not yet" (In his mind: "Ahsoka Tano turned out to be interesting" ... "I think I found my equal, I like her" ... "She will help me defeat Sidious") If only Ahsoka had teamed up with Maul, the story would have been different. They would be unstoppable. I admire and respect Maul very much
@feragosmyxixarashtra79483 жыл бұрын
I know it would be sick to see, and they share a similar Viewpoint because both were betrayed by their Former Allies, Maul by Palpatine/Sidious, Ahsoka by the Jedi Council. But Maul was trained to be more of an Assasin, a good Duelist but not a match to Sidious in the ways of the Force. And Ahsoka also fills a similar Role. If they were to engage the Sith Lord, they would be killed for they are not a Threat but still a nuisance in Sidious' Eyes, and he wouldn't have a Use for Maul or Ahsoka, they would be killed with relative ease.

@@tylerrassi4148 Definitely not Luke, maybe not Anakin. Even in RotJ Luke only won because of his connection to Anakin, his father. Maul has also consitently beaten Obi-Wan in every exchange save for his final moments, and only back-pedals when something close to him is threatened. Obi-Wan beat Anakin, Maul beats Obi-Wan when not having to worry about another, Maul could potentially beat Anakin. Although Anakin's turn to the Dark Side would also be incredibly fresh and have that additional initial surge of quick-reward power, so Maul could definitely lose against full-Sith Anakin. He already admits that he'd lose against Vader, too. We've already seen that he looses against Sidious, although he did force Sidious to take him seriously for a quick moment, something only Yoda has ever been able to do. Ultimately, I'd say a proper Ahsoka-Maul team-up loses against Sidious, probably Yoda, win against Obi-Wan, win against Light Side Anakin and lose against Dark Side Anakin (maybe).
