what made this band so special back in the day was that Steve Perry didn't just sing lyrics, he used his voice as an entirely individual instrument. He always went far beyond being just a singer.

The greatest AOR band ever. Perry and Schon , both the greatest respectively. Steve Smith, greatest Jazz and all round rock drummer ever. Ross Valory, such a talent. Johnathan Cain, composer along with Perry and Schon that at least equals that of McCartney and Lennon, Plant and Page. And must mention original and cofounder of the band Gregg Rolie, a true legend. Journey was in their heydays and without doubt the most talented and sound band in rocks history. Just look at the string of Platinum and multi platinum albums they released during those magical years. Yes! They wrote for the masses. Songs that all of us could relate too. They write such classic mood songs that truly made anyone able to relate and feel what they needed to feel from a listen. Pick you up. Help you cry. No human emotion left untouched. Not inventive enough some said. Too commercial the critics cried. Nuts to the haters, then and now. A band that touched the very inner darkest reaches of peoples souls like no band before or since. The world owes them a huge thank you. Journey On Forever. Don't Ever Stop Believin' !!!!!

I’ll tell you little story. I’m from Utah When I first heard infinity I was like 14 no I already was in bands as a bass player singer, guitar player. So I knew quite a bit about music at a young age, I honestly do not believe that he could sing like that live I thought his voice is studio manufactured. Our guitar players mom worked at the salt Palace in Salt Lake City. And got us backstage passes to the evolution concert. I was like 15 or 16. Anyways. Next thing I know we’re hanging backstage I remember being a table full of food tons of it. Then all of a sudden we heard from another room voice that I will never forget we looked at each other like is that for real, we walked down the Corredor turn the corner and Steve Perry was sitting on a stool strumming a bass guitar. With a cuppa tea with the teabag in it. Warming up. I had never heard nothing like that and have never heard nothing like that to this day. Steve Perry was my favorite singer from then on. Fast forward 1986/87 My wife work for the Smith’s Tex. And got us front row tickets to raised on radio I got my little sister A ticket. If you weeks later van Halen announced they were coming in concert. My sister came up to me and said do you care if I sell my journey to get Van Halen/Hagar. Tickets. I said yeah mind I want you to see this. Reluctantly she really didn’t want to go. Steve Perry crawling on his hands and knees over to my sister and was saying into her. After the concert all she could say was oh my God oh my God. I am so glad I did not sell my ticket to this Thursday. Her very favorite singer she just brought me his new traces CD. I’m not gonna lie it brought tears to my eyes and her’s. STEVE was really cool when he met us. A really awesome guy. The concert was freaking amazing. Sorry about your loss. But Loss brought you back. Everything happens for a reason. The latest one I was shown as pretty as the everything happens for a reason. That’s my little journey story. And there’s no other guitar player so on point. Even though I was pissed at him when they dumped on Steve Perry when he had hip replacement surgery. But whatever. They still left us with unbelievable timeless music.

I was the lead vocalist In a band starting at 15 my guitar players mom was in charge of the events at the salt Palace in Salt Lake City Utah. To be honest I thought Steve Perry’s voice was studio manufactured I thought there was no way he could pull off that kind of Octave changes, with that kind of range. Anyways we got backstage passes. I remember there was a big table of food sitting out. All of a sudden I heard a bass strumming, And I heard that voice we followed it down a hallway there he was sitting on a barstool with a white cup and saucer with a teabag hanging out of it warming up. I stood there with my mouth wide open I was totally blown away from that moment on he was by far my very favorite singer. So unbelievably gifted. Every bit of his vocal capability is from his passion you can see it through his eyes in every song he sings. He’s funny. And if you knew him he’s a total genius. He really can do anything. Neil schon Is so underrated as a guitar player. I think he’s one of the greatest.
@tammyf.78643 жыл бұрын
So, you saw him warming up backstage???!!! (Faints.) Was he doing traditional vocal warm-ups, or was he singing a song? Jonathan Cain once said in an interview that he heard Steve's voice, he thought "there's no way he can do that live in concert." But then he was amazed at what Steve can do vocally. Jonathan said that Steve did the vocals for their song "Mother, Father" from the "Escape" album in the studio IN ONE TAKE!!! GOLDEN VOICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Everyone talks about Steve Perry, and rightfully so. But, let's talk about Neal, Gregg, Jonathan, Ross and Steve S. for a moment. The Evolution/Departure era I think was Neal Schon's greatest time as a guitar player culminating in his work on Escape. After that, his tone and his style of play began to change and IMO, not for the better. Today, Neal's tone has lost much of its signature mellow yet, biting characteristics and his god like talent is hidden behind layers of delay, chorus, reverb, sustainers all topped with an almost novice-like fascination with the whammy bar. Yes, Neal Schon was one of the first to use a Floyd Rose back in the early 80's, especially on a Les Paul. His status as a pioneer and innovator cannot be questioned. I get it. But, it seems as though he's using the whammy on just about every single note these days. Its a little much. He is still one of the greatest players out there and is one of my all time favorite guitar players. But, with his caliber of talent, we shouldn't have to squint through all of the effects to glimpse that talent. And then, there's Gregg Rollie. He is perhaps one of the most unsung and underrated members of the band, past or present. His vocals meshed with Steve Perry's vocals like no other. His keyboard playing, especially when it came to blues, was unmatched. He added a writing quality to the songs that gave the band their pre-Escape signature jazzy/bluesy sound. There are few other keyboard players who can play a Hammond B3 like him. And then we have Jonathan Cain. In his own right, he is an exceptional musician. There is no question that from the Escape album forward, Journey gathered most of their commercial success. But, the depth of Cain's influence would not be completely realized until Frontiers, which was a commercial hit, but, musically, not really their best work, especially side two. Frontiers clearly signaled the beginning of Journey's transition away from their biting, bluesy/jazzy sound to a more keyboard and synthesizer oriented sound. But, there were a few tracks that were not commercial hits where the band still rocked - Troubled Child, Edge of the Blade, Chain Reaction and Rubicon, for instance. For better or for worse, we can thank Jonathan Cain for that. With every album release after Raised on Radio and especially after Perry's departure (no punny intended), lyrically, Journey's songs became more like love letters written by broken hearted teenagers set to music than anything we had come to expect from veteran rockers of this caliber. Thanks in large part to the stylings of Jonathan Cain and the exodus of Steve Smith and Ross Valory, there was nothing to prevent Jonathan Cain's "after school special" style of song writing from taking over. Not even hard rockin Neal Schon could completely contain Cain's sappy song writing. Then there's Steve Smith. But, we can't really mention Steve Smith without mentioning Ross Valory. These two were and are one of the best rhythm sections in all of rock music. No one really pays much attention to the base lines or the subtle and finessed genius of Steve Smith's playing. Take a few minutes and cue up some of Journey's older stuff and have a listen. Paying close attention to the exquisite rhythm work. Ross Valory is one of the best bass players in the game and Smith is one of the greatest drummers you will ever hear in a rock band. I promise that once you listen to and notice their playing, you will never hear another Journey tune the same away again. As an honorable mention, we have to include Aynsley Dunbar. Without a doubt Dunbar was and is a great drummer. He had a very large part in developing the band's early sound. Few people know this, but, after Journey, Ansley Dunbar's distinctive style and playing can be heard with a variety of musicians from David Bowie to White Snake. His list of appearances is really quite astonishing. What I'm not going to do is include the Steve Perry "clones" that have fronted the band. In all fairness, Arnel Pineda and Steve Augeri in their own rights are very talented singers. But, their strength and their curse is the fact they both sound like Perry but, without the "magic." In any other band, these two singers would've probably been very successful. But, putting them at the helm of Journey and sounding like Steve Perry came off as borderline creepy. It made the band look like they were going through some serious separation anxiety. Nevertheless, with Arnel Pineda, Journey has tapped into the nostalgia market and they have generated some great success. After all, there are a lot of people out there that are willing to pay good money to see some very good karaoke. With Steve Perry pushing 70, Neal Schon in his mid 60's and the rest of the band in their mid to late 60's, its very doubtful that even with Steve Perry's recent comeback, we will ever see this band get back together for any reunion. But, we can still remain faithfully hopeful that the party's not over and they will be feeling that way towards some sort of reunion. Perhaps there will be some miracle after the fall that these guys will welcome the notion of a reunion with open arms and stay awhile. Perhaps someday soon, they will play some magic together one last time after all these years and each one of us will lament to ourselves "why can't this night go on forever?"

In my opinion Steve Smith and Neil Schon are probably the best Rock and fusion Duos out there !!! They can take a riff and take it to another level and seem to never run out of ideas !!! I wish they would make a new Journey album of old songs but make them instrumentals !!!! with stretched out solos like this video !!! May not sell a million copies but I'd buy one !!!!

La voz de Steve es impecable, inmejorable. Aún corriendo y saltando por el escenario canta perfecto. Es único.

These "Live in Osaka" are great quality videos both in video capture and musical sound is amazing. There aren't many videos from early 80's done so well.

Loved this line up. Jonathon Cain is a tremendous song writer, but I just love this line up.

I'm a huge Journey fan and I have obviously overlooked this awesome song, I must have been living under a rock LOL. Thanks for posting, great song. I must admit I'm really liking the Journey tunes prior to Cain joining, a year ago I never would have said that!

Wouldn't that be Awesome if they could get Steve Perry and Gregg Rollie for a reunion tour. Wow, that would be epic!!!

His voice is somewhat different from what it use to be, but he can still sing!!! Years of touring with Journey with very little down time will do that to a voice.

I prefer the Perry/Rolie years myself. I love how their voices played off each other.
