* Steve's dad was a singer, so he knew from the age of four or so that he wanted to sing, too. * He became a drummer in the marching band in school, and performed in a barbershop quartet - which taught him harmonies and such. * In his teens, he had a few bands and was a singer/drummer in them. His senior year or so in high school, Steve and his band - The Sullies - participated in a Battle of the Bands contest in Calaveras, California. Steve played drums and sang during this contest, and he and his band won the top prize - beating 80 other bands. * He and another group - Alien Project - were about to sign a record deal with Chrysalis/Columbia Records when the band's bassist was killed in a car crash during the Fourth of July holiday. * Steve wanted to give up, but his mom encouraged him to continue to pursue music. A few days later, Journey's manager called Steve and said he'd heard Steve's demo tape and wanted him to join Journey. * The band wasn't sure about Steve joining them because he had such a unique voice, and they weren't sure of how his voice would fit in with their sound. However, their manager insisted. * Steve met up with the band, and he and guitarist Neal Schon got together one night and wrote the song "Patiently" - the first song they ever wrote together. * Journey had been a jazz-fusion band but after Steve joined, it became more song-oriented - focusing on Steve's voice, vocal range, and song-writing abilities. * It wasn't until after Steve joined Journey that the band began having huge success - selling out arenas.

I saw Journey on the Today show. It was years ago back when I used to watch The Today Show and when Hoda was still with Kathy Lee. I don't dare get near that anymore because of the politics in America. The vocalist who took Perry's spot, Arnel, is good and similar to Steven Perry nowhere near close to his technicality or his vocals. His voice sounds pretty similar to Steve Perry's but he's nowhere near as good even though he's good.

Another Great Song, featuring the Spendid Voice of Steve Perry with Journey. Truly outstanding. We learn from KZbin Videos and Interviews that his Father was a Local Singer, and his Parents bought him Pair of Bongos when he was quite young. Steve Perry loved drums from a very young age. Eventually he received a New Drumset, Gifted by his Mother. He did, however, fall in love with the 'Craft of the Singing Voice,' fairly young which, in turn, developed into him becoming a Singer/Drummer during his School Days. The Band was immensely good, playing for School Functions, and even winning a Competition over 200 other Bands. Steve Perry imerged, as a Singer with an "Amazing Voice." Long Story Short, he sought out to Sing Professionally, which led him to being hired by Journey in late 1977. Of course, the realities and pressures of the Rock Band World, and his Mother's severe illness and passing in 1985 during his "Raised On Radio" Concert Tour only exacerbated the situation. Unfortunately, Steve Perry had "lost his original passion for singing" and so honestly felt, he had no choice but to leave Journey in early 1987. Thankfully, he did listen to his 'inner voice,' since he's still with us today. In October, 2018, he released his New Album "Traces," and has also, released other Albums to the Happiness of his many, many fans around the World. 🤗 💜 🎶 Thank you.

Steve and guitarist Neal Schon wrote this in a hotel room the first time they met. At the time, their manager Herbie wanted to replace lead singer Robert Fleischman, who was a decent singer and songwriter, but a diva. Steve's demo tape had crossed his desk and Steve joined Journey in cognito as the Portuguese cousin of one of the roadies. When he wrote this song with Neal, he was waiting for the nod to go on a frontman. That explains the lyrics. At the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Induction, Neal referred to this song when he called Steve (from whom he is estranged) as "one in a million". Steve was gracious at the ceremony, praising each member and especially current lead singer Arnel, but he will have nothing to do with the band after the way they treated him in the past.

Interesting Marsha. Its a shame they could not work things out 25 years ago. They were maybe the greatest band of my youth. Arnell is a competent stand in, but he is not Steve. What ever happened must have hit Steve pretty hard, because we have not heard from him since Raised on Radio.Too bad. Steve is one my favorite vocalists ever. There will never be another act like Journey ...great talent at every instrument.

So pleased to see yet another awaken to the phenomenal gifts of Steve Perry, and Journey, with his lead vocals. He's not in love with the microphone; he's in love with the music, the sound emanating from his being, and surrounding him on stage. Truly, truly transformative. One cannot help but be moved by the power and emotion behind every note, every uttered word. Arnel has certainly done well as current lead vocalist, helping to bring the music of Journey to millions of new fans and young generations. He took on a very difficult challenge; stepped into very big shoes. His technical ability is clear...and...there is something...undeniably different, something missing... Steve Perry is called "The Voice" for a reason. Of course, with all the heartache he has endured, and what is most certainly his inherent empathic understanding of music...his iconic and emotional abilities when delivering a performance...move us, sweeping through the core of our spirit. Those of us who grew up listening to Journey in the '70's and '80's know that his time with Journey was truly a "once in a life time". His voice has changed of course with age and grief; there is a distinct rasp, reminiscent of Johnny Cash, and an obvious narrowing of vocal range. We will forever have his music, that shining heart for delivering every note and lyric with powerful, passionate, precise intent, and we will always remember THE Journey. This piece was released in the '70's...young Steve, who had been in several previous bands, was their NEW lead singer. Steve has always been a musician, and plays not only drums, but keyboard and guitar. Steve's father Ray was a vocalist. The incredible talent in music, for Steve Perry, goes far being the remarkable vocal chops; as song writer, producer, director, he had a huge influence on all music of that time and forward. As you mention; because of his experience and understanding of music, it is transformed. The impact of Steve Perry is similar to people like David Foster and Richard Marx, yet most only know his Voice. Thanks for the reviews and for promoting this music legacy.

You ask such good questions. 'Patiently' was the first song Steve and the guitarist, Neal Schon wrote together after Steve joined Journey. Steve says that it is about him joining the band and his excitement. The reason the song changes in the middle is because it is another song called 'One in a Million'. They put it in the middle of 'Patiently'. Tucking a song within a song was a thing some artists did back then. Both songs are about the same thing, Steve joining the band. Steve went into it much deeper, but it is too much for me to type right now. Steve was a drummer in high school, and later in other bands he was a drummer/singer. He was never a drummer for Journey, but management had once talked about having 2 sets of drums on stage, but that never happened.

The 1st time he left was in 1987ish. He feared for his sanity. Came back around 1997-1998 where they recorded Trial by Fire album. Steve went to Hawaii where he hikes mountains to get in shape for the touring. While hiking he started hurting in his hip and barely made it off the mountain. Turns out bones were degenerating and he needed a hip replacement which he did not take lightly. The band told him to make a decision, which he resented, so they fired him and got another singer. He eventually got the hip repalcement but basically left music until his dying girlfriend told him to not go back into seclusion after she passed.. He promised and just put out a new album Traces 2-3 years ago.

And I think It was more of a 'you-don't-have-to-fire-me-because-I-quit' kind of thing going on during the end of Steve's tenure with Journey - especially after being told that the band was already auditioning other singers. Funny, though, how they knew Steve was their meal ticket, and every singer after him has had to sound like him.

Greg Rolie was on keyboards still with Journey here so it was probably 1978.Would you believe when Herbie Herbert rang Steve to come and try out for the lead singer, the other guy’s didn’t want him in the band, Herbie said well too bad he’s going too be in the band and he was . I’ve heard Neal say , Steve bought all of the success and they became great writers together. My all-time favorite female singer is Janis Joplin in what short career she had that rasp and the way she feels the blues and the soul within her it’s mesmerizing just closing my eyes and listening! Actually it was a Turkey Farm in Hanford California, he spent quite a bit of time in LA trying too get into the business and almost made it he was the Drummer/ Lead Singer in a band called the Alien Project they were about to start recording an Album for 1 of the record companies. However fate intervened and a couple of days before they were due to record, the Bass player was sadly killed in a car accident. So Steve said that’s it, I’m not meant to do this, so his Stepdad gave him work fixing Turkey Coups. I t was then that Herbie called him and said he would pay his wages for a week if he would come and virtually just try out with Journey. Steve was an only child and he and his Mum were very close and he told her he didn’t think he would do it but she encouraged him to go and the rest as they say is history. Both his parents were Big Band Singer’s so I’d guess he got some of his talent from them. They Separated when he was 7or 8 and he’s said that really hit him hard. Also his Mum developed a very bad illness and passed in 1987, he was devastated and apart from being burned out I think the loss of his Mum also had a lot to do with him leaving Journey. To my knowledge he wasn’t fired, he quit saying he just couldn’t do it anymore and he was toast. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇬🇧🕺🏻💃🎸☘️

Patiently, is the very first song that Steve and Neal (the guitarist) wrote together!!! Steve is indeed a drummer. He played drums and sung in his band when he was a teenager. I believe it was towards the end of the Raised On Radio (aka....ROR) tour, when he just had enough. As Steve would put it.....'I was toasted!' That was in 1986. In 1996 they were united for the Trial By Fire, which is when Perry found out about his hip. For me, as a believer in Jesus Christ. This song has so much biblical meanings!! Jesus being the Light of the world. Where He shines in us and through us. Through out the bible we are taught to 'wait patiently of the Lord'. 'For your song in me', the bible also says, that 'He would give us a song in the night!'. Now I have NO IDEA if Journey (Perry and Schon) even know about what the bible says. It's just how I see the song!

Steve both drummed and sang in earlier bands, most notably one called The Sullies. He was also in a group called Alien Project before the manager for Journey got his audition tape of vocals. To his credit the manager Herbie Herbert decided right then and there that Steve Perry would be the band's lead singer.

🔥🔥So happy, you have chosen to do another Journey reaction. Perhaps "Stsy Awile" or "Lights" next. For me Steve Perry's voice is incomparable. Freddie's voice is amazing too, they just have different vocal qualities and gifts. Your admiration gor Journey is showing ❤ Steve Perry joined Journey in 1977 and was lead singer until 1998. 🎼 Besides playing drums, he plays guitar, bass guitar and keyboards. An all around talented guy. In the early 70's he sang and played in a couple of bands, but failed to find representation. He finally was introduced to Journey, that had formed in 1973, and the rest is magic. 🎶 You still have much more to unpack, my friend Hap!! I am glad to be tagging along for the ride.💥💥🎶🎼🎧 Peace J ✌ ☮ 💕

Great reaction Hap! Steve and Neal Schon have said that they wrote Patiently together the first time they met. This obviously was early Journey with Steve Perry. I love that you checked out the Midnight Special version and I suggest you check out another song they performed on the Midnight Special. I have suggested it before. It’s called Anytime. It is another song that starts as a slow ballad and takes off soaring with Steve’s flawless, golden voice. Steve used to play the drums and was in a band called the Sullie’s early on and joined another band called the Alien Project. One of the band members was tragically killed in a car accident and Steve said he had decided to give up on music and return to his grandfather’s turkey farm when his Mother convinced him NOT to give up on his passion for music. The band’s manager Herbie Herbert was looking to take the already formed rock fusion band Journey in a different direction and was given a tape recording demo of a singer who just happened to be Steve Perry. The demo is called If You Need Me. Herbie heard the song and pretty much told the other members, like it or not, Steve is going to be a part of this band. Fortunately for Journey and Steve Perry fans, the rest is history. Keep enjoying the “journey”into “Journey....Lol! Sorry , I couldn’t help myself. 🤣🤣🤣Great reaction as always.

This was the first song that Steve and Neal wrote together, when Steve joined the band. Became the formula for a lot of Journey's music. Ballad style beginning building to a Neal solo and Steve hitting the big notes. Good stuff.

Infinity...the first journey lp with Perry is absolute perfection! Just do yourself a favour and put some headphones on and close your eyes and listen. Steve is not a drummer. Don't know where you heard that. His father was multi instrumentalist.

C wasatko, Steve was a drummer. Just look it up. He drummed in his high school bands. You can also look for the video by Forrest somebody called "Steve Perry is the best singer I ever worked with." He said Steve was a drummer. Other musicians say it too.

Steve plays a lot of instruments. I dont know when he learned what, but I do know he has been singing since he was a little boy. Sam Cook is credited as being his biggest early influence, aside from his dad. This is the first song he and Neil wrote together, and I think its a love song to the audience.

Patiently was the first song that Steve Perry and lead guitarist Neal Schon wrote together. Steve put out his first solo album in 1984, went back to Journey in ‘85 for the’86 Tour. He was a drummer with his first band The Sulleys and went to singing. In 1994 Steve put out his second solo album, then went back to Journey in ‘95 to release the final album with Steve and Journey together in 1996 and he left the band in 1998.

Steve dabbled in drums in highschool. His girlfriend taught him piano and he played synthesizers. He took up guitar in highschool as well. His dad was a singer and also his mom a singer so it runs in the family. He tried music and different bands that did not workout well. He quit music alltogether and was working at a turkey farm when he got a call from manager Herbie Herbert. He was brought in to fix Journey and it all gelled.

Steve first kind of left Journey in 1984. At that time other members had gone off and done solo projects, which Steve objected to. Fed up with the infighting, he went off and produced his first solo project, Street Talk on his own dime. It was a hit and better than Journey's Frontiers album and the record company were worried that Steve was gone permanently. So they pulled support from the album, bent over backwards to try to lure Steve back to the band. Steve had full creative control and produced Raised on Radio, which some laughingly refer to as Steve's 2nd album. He left after the Raised on Radio tour, then permanently after they got together after his 2nd solo album For the Love of Strange Medicine. Yes, Steve was a drummer in his high school band, then with every band he was with until the early 70s when he decided to solely step up to the microphone. He's been a singer since he was a little kid.

Perry had his solo stuff right around 83 which is when Frontiers was released. He was still in Journey. Early Steve Perry Journey was 78-80 with Greg Rolie who sang black magic woman in Santana, while guitarist Neal Schon was also in the band. It definitely had more of an bluesy sound. When Rolie left, Jonathon Cain from the baby’s took over the keyboard role and co wrote a bunch of their hits with Schon and Perry (Don’t Stop believin, faithfully, separate ways). Also Perry could play drums, but he’s always been a singer.

I have no idea what is this song about but did enjoy it, I guess you don't have to literally understand it, just feel it ("Let the Music do the Talking!", right? 😉) Also, I just love street performers, always stop to listen, there are so many talented people out there to be discovered! I remember once being mesmerized with a young boy, a teenager (and self tought) playing violin on the street like noone I've heard before, it was a magical experience I'll never forget.

This is the 1st song that Neal Schon and Steve Perry wrote together right before Steve joined the band. I think it was the story of Steve's life and his attempts at making it successfully into the music business. It took patience and he had almost given up and gone back to his grandfather's turkey farm. His previous band Alien Project was about to be signed when one of the band members was killed. Herbie Herbert heard a demo and he called him up.

I was going to tell this story and saw you already did. My understanding is Steve pretty much gave up on a music career and was building Chicken Coops on the family farm when Herbie called him. He went on the road with Journey and him and Schon wrote this song in a hotel room about 15 or 20 minutes. Also, I want to thank Hap for this reaction. I checked and could not find another reaction video to this particular song.
