The Cordillera Blanca is a mountain range located in the highlands of the department of Áncash , Peru , which is part of the Andes mountain range and extends in a northwesterly direction for about 200 km 3 . It occupies an area of 16,000 km², being the largest snow-capped tropical mountain range with 17 peaks that exceed 6,000 m, 1,072 lagoons and 722 glaciers. 3 The Huascarán (6757 m) the highest mountain in the country and in the intertropical zone is located in this mountain range.
Snow melt in the cordillera provides year-round water to much of northern Peru, while 5% of this country's electrical power comes from the Cañón del Pato hydroelectric plant, located in the Río valley .
