About:
Based on T. S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the show is set amongst a larger- than-life junkyard playground and is alive with our favourite feline characters including Rum Tum Tugger, Mr. Mistoffelees, Macavity, Jennyanydots, Old Deuteronomy, Grizabella and Skimbleshanks.
The Jellicle Cats come out to play on one special night of the year - the night of the Jellicle Ball. One by one they tell their stories for the amusement of Old Deuteronomy, their wise and benevolent leader, who must choose one of the Cats to ascend to The Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a whole new Jellicle life.

Maybe Victoria is one of Grizabella's old lives, as is Jemima, which is probably why they initially accepted her. And maybe Bombalurina and Demeter are reincarnations of her that died with regrets, which is why they had such resentment towards her.

I’ve seen some people say they think there was a slight competition between Gus and Grizabella being reborn. The reason I feel like Grizabella deserved it more was because the majority of her life was suffering. Gus has a good life, as good as a street cat’s life can get. Just a few words to everyone who talks about "oh no, they killed her, she's going to death, to euthanize, etc". First of all, that's deeply metaphorical, they didn't send her up to 100 miles, directly to ionosphere and also they didn't kill her, they just decide that she deserves to end up with all sufferings and reborn as a new, young person, which can raise and shine again. So again, it's just metaphora and there's no way to think straight about kill, about death ritual etc.

I've seen this film, no joke, at least 35 times this summer. You'd think by now the emotional impact of this scene would have worn off, but I just finished watching it and honestly the impact only gets stronger with every viewing. Such a bittersweet moment, the death of Grizabella, but the start of something better. She looks so uncertain, but also so glad to have finally been accepted by the others. The more I get to know all the personalities of the various cats, the more I can appreciate that

I believe Gus was a character in this play meant for us to compare grizabella. Even though we feel for Gus and we would like for him to be reborn he had a great life and was accepted grizabella on the other hand she failed in her endeavors while Gus succeeded and she was unaccepted. So between grizabella and Gus, grizabella is the best choice between the two to be chosen to be reborn. At least that's my opinion.☺

One of the things that's helped me appreciate this show more is the fact that... it's gotta kind of suck to be a cat, right? You're a very small creature who runs a much greater risk for being accidentally killed or catching some terrible disease, and the world is run by animals that are much bigger than you who have the power to pretty much decide whether you live or die. Getting to take some of that power back, living and dying on your own terms, and getting the chance to live the life of safety and contentment you've always dreamed of... the Jellicles have a pretty good racket going. I feel like if the 2019 movie had expanded on that idea rather than adding the nonsense Macavity subplot, it might have been much better.

Neither the play nor the original poems mention anything like that, and really, anything that isn't mentioned in canon is 100% up to interpretation. Personally, I don't believe they're siblings. They just don't seem to be that familiar with each other yet, compared to other bro-sis duos in the show. Just basing it on their interactions in Act I alone, I get the impression that she didn't know him at all (or at least not well) until the scene where they dance together, just after her solo. He jumps out, unfreezes her, they dance, and from that point on they're buddy-buddy. But, like I said; if it's not directly stated, it's totally up to fan interpretation. xD

I saw Cats in the first Broadway run when I was a kid. I liked that it was about animals, and I thought the ins and outs of the set were neat, but the plot didn't seem to make sense. There was a thread of weird religious allegory, but nothing else really stood out. As an adult, I realize that feeling was because Cats has almost no plot since it's based on a series of poems T.S. Elliot wrote about a bunch of random cats. Cats doesn't have a narrative because Elliot didn't have a narrative. It's too bad though, the set was beautiful and it's always fascinating to learn more about groups you don't get to see, animals or otherwise

However Trevor Nunn thought it must have some plot so with the help of the unpublished poem "Grizabella the Glamour Cat" which was provided by Eliot's widow, Trevor Nunn manufactured a sort of plot around these poems.

Believe it or not.... this tears up my heart.. NOT for the reason you would anticipate. I bought tickets 3 months in advance to see CATS at the Adler theater in Davenport IA. I was driving 3 hours to the theater.. taking niece/nephew 13 and 11. Was their first ever theater experience period! On the way there, got a call that due to technical difficulties would not have all props. smaller stage set up. In all reality... 5 chairs on stage... incredible singing... no dancing... heart breaking. My dream since it came out 1982- and I as a 12 year old participated in a theater production with snip its of the whole broadway productiion... yes for that long- looking forward to seeing it done.. touring broadway cast. and due to broken elevator- that was my experience. my dream of really exciting my niece and nephew by taking them to perhaps the best production ever- gone.

Heaviside Layer is a layer of ionized gas between the altitudes of 50 and 90 miles above sea level. Due to solar radiation, temperature at this altitude can be as low as -100 degrees and as high as 440 degrees. Depending on what time of the day she reached Heaviside Layer, Grizabella would have either frozen solid or burned to death.

I think it was based off of an old book of poetry with a similar plot. I still don't understand how these ideas come into people's heads.
