I just saw this movie for the second time. Again I was moved to tears. I read that the movie was panned by the critics, but to me it brought the tragedy of that infamous day to life. I don't see how anyone could watch it and not be honestly moved and come away with real appreciation for the "the Greatest Generation" and sadness of war.

Half of the movie sucked big time, the love triangle took more screen time than the actual war. Looked like a goddamn cheap soap opera.
@RealComp52 жыл бұрын
I think there were two issues. The biggest issue was probably the marketing, which gave the impression it was an all-out action movie and nothing else. I think the other issue is that the love story was just too long. It's a 3-hour long movie and the love story is probably most of it. If it had been 30 minutes shorter and cut down on the length of the love story aspects, I think it would have been much more well received. That said, I think the love story, though a bit too dramatic with the love triangle soap opera stuff, it did do a really good job of giving the characters a lot of weight and depth which made everything feel more real. There probably would have been a more entertaining way to do that, but it definitely achieved its purpose of making the movie feel heavy and real. I'd give it a 9/10 with one point off for the love story being too dramatic and too long.

Actual veterans and survivors walked out of the movie because it was so inaccurate and disrespectful. For example, why have Ben and Josh's characters do what actual heroes did? That's a direct slap in the face to actual heroes. Ben: "everything that happened to my character actually happened to someone" yeah, so show that! Also it was an obvious attempt to cash in after the success of Titanic a few years earlier.

I know history buffs scoffed at the movie, but Bay did a good job trying to tell a captivating story without dragging people down is specific details. He generalized a lot of the character’s positions so we could follow just a handful of characters instead of too many. I enjoyed the movie, and still do.

Was at Pearl for a week in 03/2019. Got a chance to meet Everett Hyland, a survivor. Very emotional vacation. Couldn't even enjoy the rest of my vacation cuz of my bittersweet experience. Outside the beautiful beach resorts, folks are homeless. Literally sleeping on the streets of Hawaii. Completely heart breaking.

Going in to see this movie at the cinema in 2001, I had seen Saving Private Ryan 3 years prior. The opening 20 minutes of that changed the way war movies and movies in general were made. But Pearl Harbor's recreation of the attack lasting almost an hour of screen time that doesn't let up is gut wrenching, thrilling and mesmerizing. It was an awesome viewing experience on the big screen. I try to forget about the sappy love story and just enjoy the action.

I know this movie is riddled with historical inaccuracies, but I can get passed that, and the love story doesn't feel as forced and Anakin and Padme from the Star Wars prequels. This is clearly not the Michael Bay we see now. He clearly did try. Now a days, his movies are ALL explosions. I think him changing certain things was for entertainment purposes. It's jarring, but I can look passed it. It's a movie, not a documentary.

You guys could not of been more right.. This story had to be done 110% correct from start to finish, and how extremely important it was to the BRAVE men that were there on that nightmare of a day... I got emotional even just watching this and the development of what could very well be a front row seat to one of the most horrible days in Naval history... GREAT JOB!!!!!
