In this spontaneous dharma talk, Shinzen begins with discussing the components of mindfulness and the importance of understanding yourself as a sensory system. Then he weaves his way through No Self, science, Buddhist metaphors & meditation- to the "Eternal Fountain of Youth" - ending with a pivotal statement about his experience in regards to judging others.

Thank you so much for still uploading these videos. I have seen all the existing Shinzen videos in youtube for too many times already. Interesting thing I noticed is that even though I watched some videos many times two years ago and almost knew them by heart, when I watch it again, I notice a lot of new stuff in the video. I feel like the speaker, Shinzen, looks more enlightened than before. I mean his body language and things like that. But then I realized this is not limited only to him - my friends, whom I used to think as super-unenlightened, have begun to seem very enlightened too. It's funny. I guess what I'm saying, is that I used to want to get enlightened - just me, I didn't want others to become enlightened - I wanted to be the one telling other people how things are! But then I realized that it's either all of us becoming enlightened together or no one.

love what your saying. I noticed that about people close to me too. The way I see it is: the less you think about your nearest one's, limiting them to either that or that, the more you get the good parts: wisdom, understanding and easy-flowing life... And, when you're open you tend to connect easier, more directly, with just about anybody...

And the cat is still there:) When the spiritual teacher and his disciples began their evening meditation, a cat who lived in the monastery made such noise that it distracted them. One day the teacher ordered that the cat be tied up during the evening practice. Years later, when the teacher died, the cat continued to be tied up during the meditation session. And when the cat eventually died, another cat was brought to the monastery and tied up. Centuries later, learned descendants of the spiritual teacher wrote scholarly treatises about the religious significance of tying up a cat for meditation practice.

yes, that is true. Cats prove reincarnation. Each one of them has 9 lives. Tie them up in knots, makes no difference.

Look forward to seeing a Shinzen video made only one month ago. Been listening to Science of Enlightenment (no sitting practice) for about five/six years now, on and off, before I go to sleep, and possibly enlightenment has crept up on me, at least my sense of self does seem to be gone, but I still struggle to break up the six senses most days, and am definitely not suffering free yet, have had the suck in/spill out experience now and again, which I think is genuine and not realms of power. Not bumped into any giant caterpillars luckily, and somati without a seed certainly beyond me, but at least I worked out what it actually is now 😀

Hi Shinzen. I am a medical student interested in the research project you are doing at Harvard. Can you give me more details about it so I can look up the principal investigator? I am taking a year off to do some research and would love to be involved in it.

This is crazy. If you are serious, become a monk or nun or find a way to live outside society. Trying to acquire the benefits of seclusion within society is just nonsense. It's not going to happen. Waste of time. Seems everybody thinks they can out perform the Buddha. Which is laughable.

The “ah” and “um” is so annoying. Shinzen seriously need to go to Toastmasters. It’s a good talk but reduced in effectiveness because of the speech fillers.
