When Bowe Bergdahl infamously walked off his base in Afghanistan in 2009 he was captured by the Taliban and held for five years, tortured and kept in a tiny cage. But the nightmare only continued when he was freed by President Obama in exchange for five Taliban prisoners from Guantanamo. Arriving home, he was vilified in the media as a deserter who collaborated with the enemy. Donald Trump called for him to be shot as a “dirty rotten traitor”. So what is his side of the story? Film-maker Sean Langan gets exclusive access to Bowe Bergdahl and to his parents, presenting a moving story of a family caught in a storm of false allegations, and a soldier who made a mistake and paid a terrible price.

He's just a soldier who had a mental breakdown. In WW I, men who did that were shot but but it is not looked on as the right response. His desertion did endanger others but you don't choose to have a mental breakdown and being a POW who is abused for years is not something a rational person would choose. In fact, he was lucky to be alive since the Taliban does not normally take prisoners. Wandering away from a military post, where he did was a suicidal act. The Taliban was using guerrilla tactics and did not have the facilities to hold many POWs during the war.

@Intelligence_Failure

@@notsocrates9529 I quite like the show despite it obviously being imper°°list pr°p°ganda (mostly by humanizing and portraying the CIA and US military as largely forces for good with some highlighted bad apples to make the depiction more credible), but I don't think I recall a particular singular shark-jumping moment. maybe (to phrase it vaguely and thin on spoilers) the time when the one lead character got stuck in the tower of d°°°° for a long time, I think the show kinda lost itself in tedium then. or maybe you were particularly fond of a different character and really hated the fact that this character acquires a disability that then leads to many depressing scenes depicting suffering and dysfunctional coping strategies? well, broadly that sort of thing was part of the show from the start in smaller doses, but sure, I would agree that those and some other developments toward gloominess and more personal misery becoming the plot made the show worse as it went on. but I don't recall one sudden switch, and it was not as much of a quality drop as many other shows exhibit. or maybe it recovered a little at the end, I'm not sure. my pick for shark jump would be game of thones season 7 episode "beyond the wall", and my pick for the biggest quality drop is the handmaid's tale (I would rate it as a decrease of dead°ss 9/10 down to 3/10, to me it once was a real top tier series and at least as of the latest season, it is unwatchable, much worse even than the cringe of power).

@richardallen9710 he was on firewatch/post which not being at is a punishable offense under the ucmj , AND doing it in combat ESPECIALLY with an enemy that loved making beheading videos. You need permissions and approvals to leave the wire ,it's a really big deal so as to prevent the enemy walking on base or a person working with the enemy committing an act of treason, If you aren't somewhere where you're supposed to be stateside you can get charged with unauthorized absence, to do it in combat is truly mind-boggling. Thousands of serviceman cycled through Afghanistan and Iraq and this is the only case like this I'm aware of so I think it's quite fair to say this didn't happen very often, the consequences (which everyone knew because we've had hundreds of briefings) would have been extremely severe.

To the reporter who was in captivity for 4 months: you were very biased in the interview with Bowe by not mentioning the most important question; why did you go to the mountains in the first place?. I understand that you were starstruck and flabbergasted to meet him. We clearly see that from you blushing and making noises when you met him. That is acceptable obviously on the condition that you ask the right questions and you have not. We know that the Taliban torture pow’s, although we do not know why he escaped. That is the quintessential question of the whole story. It is stupidity at the least in the case of the reporter to walk into a territory of the enemy, and potentially treachery at the most in Bowe’s case. It is totally plausible for a person to doubt and question a person that instead of protecting others as a military man, he became a liability to others and caused harm to them. All for what ? What was the purpose of venturing off? Walking 31 km to report dysfunction in the company is very suspicious.

Correct. I believe that the reporter is still traumatized by HIS own experience and was glad for the shared experience with Bowe, to ease his pain. The reporter could also have asked him how he felt about the men killed? [not sure] hurt by his decision to leave his Unit without permission, putting others at risk. Good reporter, but this time he fell down on the job.

@@kenw2225yeah, I know. Grim. So many allied people were killed or maimed and countless innocent civilians too….and for what? That was a government decision though, Bowe made his own choice and his people were killed when they were deployed to look for him. I can’t forgive that kind of selfish behaviour. However, the Army has a lot to answer for - they allowed him to join even though he was obviously unfit to serve. He was booted from Coastguard training due to psychological problems……that should’ve made him ineligible to join the Army. I guess they needed as many young folk as they could get though and as such, some of the blame should be laid at the feet of those who changed recruitment policy. I know it’s harsh of me to judge and comment on this whole clusterfuck, but I genuinely believe Bowe is a selfish and cowardly individual who knew what would happen when he walked off base. It wasn’t a spur of the moment decision as he’d made arrangements to send stuff home and had asked questions about taking his weapon and other stuff off base. He knew he was going to bin his job and he knew brave young men would have to go put themselves in harm’s way to find him. I can’t forgive that kind of narcissism and selfishness. Nobody forced him to sign up for the army….he knew he’d be deployed and he knew the circumstances under which he’d be serving. He had the opportunity to say no at the recruiting office or at the start of training. The sad thing is, I don’t believe he’s ever shown genuine remorse for what he did. His parents too. All 3 seem to live in this bubble and can’t see things from the point of anyone else. Anyway, apologies for ranting. I know people will differ with my opinion and that’s ok - I’m fortunate enough to live in a country where I’m able to voice my opinion without fear of being sent to prison or being physically attacked, (hey Putin, you asshole…..stop murdering people who call you out), and I count my blessings that being born and raised in Scotland is akin to winning the lottery when it comes to living standards.

While I’m at it, why hasn’t poor Paul Whelan been released from Russia yet? Look how quickly that bratty Griner chick was released after the government finally agreed to release Victor Bout or whatever his name is…….seems very unfair that Paul Whelan, (who has been locked away for a very long time), was just forgotten about while liberal media types and politicians bitched and cried about a basketball player who didn’t seem to love her country very much was paraded as some kind of heroine. Makes my piss boil. Even if, (and I doubt it’s the case), he really was doing some sneaky beaky espionage stuff it still seems incredibly unfair that he’s been left to rot because he’s not an openly gay liberal. The world has forgotten about this poor guy who was once a Marine. He served his country and even though he has mixed citizenship, he should’ve been afforded way more help and attention. Poor bastard.

Those should be blamed not clarifying the exact cause to invade foreign countries like Iran, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Lebanon and caused the valuable young lives of the US soldiers for their own benifits but for the sake of country's interest, utilized the vague words like Weapons of Mass Destruction. And many of those US Veterans are passing hard traumatized lives, even become addicted to drugs. How could you justify this low rank young private!!!

Know what is wrong with the world in general? We won't live and let live, believe and let believe. Everyone has to be a Democrat, Christian, Straight, Muslim, or war and destruction. Let's look at Democracy in the USA. Thousands of working poor with 2 jobs living in cars, or tents. Thousands and thousands of addicts living on every city pavement, shitting and pissing same place. An average of 20 kids and scores of citizens gunned down in the USA yearly. Riding the trains is a risk. The lobbyists run the country, giving billions of dollars to candidates who gives back the favor when elected. Our willing soldier constantly pay the price, leaving our shores to travel thousands and thousands of miles to '''teach democracy'''. One general told a reporter that they were in Iraq to '''free'' the people. The reporter retorted '''maybe they want to be FREE of America''' poignantly said

Many of the soldiers I know who served in the army, do not even want to talk about their '''service''' they are angry about their mates with PTSD, the ones who were maimed, the ones who died unnecessarily, and the ones who committed suicides, and ashamed and at the trick played on them by their government.

Shean Langan is one of my favorite reporters, but this time he has fallen a little short. He keeps comparing his experience to Bowe's. Being a journalist, it is well known the inherent risks of the job, can't get away from that. In Bowe's case, he deliberately left his Unit putting himself, and his mates at risk, and even harm. Bowie's father wanted to appease the kidnappers, OK, but why continue with the beard charade in the press conference with the president? I also understand that Bowe had to play along with the kidnappers for his own safety.
