I am Greek (not a Lesbian) and I can attest that when a Greek person says they are from Lesbos, immediately the jokes begin. We like to play with words and tease the Lesbians (people from Lesbos). That being said, the lgbtq community have not appropriated the term. I mean this confusion happened literally thousands of years ago and has nothing to do with the community itself. If I was Lesbian I would enjoy all the puns and the jokes you can make out of this situation. "My name is Paul and I'm a proud Lesbian!" or what the lady in the video said "I am a lesbian Lesbian!" Love it! If anything else, this is good publicity for the island and it helps people get to know Greek culture and, ultimately, where the word "lesbian" and "sapphic" came from.

Sapfo though is a reason to be proud as a Greek. Her poetry is so lyrical and beautiful and she had the ''guts'' in an ancient Greek society that most women were treated as men's objects who stayed home most of the time and got hardly any education to be the first feminist and found her own school teaching only girls

You can't change the term "lesbian" (meaning homossexual lady) on a global level... lots of other languages use the same "lesb" root.. (my language for example, "lésbica") But if I was born in Lesbos, I would feel exactly the same as their citizens do.

I can understand why many of the inhabitants of Lesbos are unhappy with the association - the same way perhaps real feminists are. So many women will have nothing to do with feminism - most of us have a sexual bent of one kind or another - but we dont advertise.

What I mean is that the people of Crete have a similar problem. The word cretin ( Oxford dictionary) has present meaning as a person afflicted with cretinism or a marked mental deficiency, & is also used in many European Languages as a pejorative, an insult meaning the same as a stupid person, idiot, JERK. I don't think it's fair that this word has has evolved to this meaning, there's a difference in spelling Cretan & Cretin so there's a distinction, but both are pronounced the same.

I agree with you my friend. The word "cretin" is not derived form the word "cretan" which means the man from the island Crete. It 's a total different story. But the homosexual woman is called "lesbian", because Sappho is concidered to be the first homosexual woman in history and she was a Lesbian, which means she was from the island Lesbos. It's a different thing, please apologise to the Cretans

No, Nationalism is based on intuition through knowing how diverse the people of this world are and how they wish to have their own sovereignty. Men and women are not equal, it is so funny that egalitarians go on and on about equality but realise that it does not exist because there are differences in life such as gender. Men and women have different capabilities, accept that!

@robertlombardo8437 Жыл бұрын
I wonder how the maniacs will all feel when they realize Sappho was known to be married (to a man!) and less than 700 lines of her poetry still exist, with only one poem in its entirety. And none of them go beyond slight innuendo. Oh. And she committed suicide because she was turned down by a man. Often ignored detail there, I would imagine. Ancient Greece wasn't gay. Homosexuality was seen as perverse and animalistic and was practiced in its majority by a perverse sub-sect of the elite on teenaged minors.

It doesn't matter if every new generation there is one that is "not normal" it's what the majority has established as standard. Majoritie wins. Plain and simple.

@Ilkamy nope its not as simple as being open minded or narrow minded. its about those who are affected by it negatively. I feel bad for the people of Lisbo, it is too bad this has happend and I can see where they are comming from. Unfortunatly it is too late to do much about it, Lisbian for a female homosexual has caught on and is part of at least the English Language if not more (ie Greek). There isn't much to be done about it, even if they were to win in court, people will go on using Lisbian to mean a gay female.

I have no problem with minority groups. However, u have to worry when the rights of minority groups stomp all over those of the majority. The lesbians spoke as if the island is their exclusive birthright! We're talking about the identity of an entire island population. It's the same with the issue over the Greek name Macedonia. Having said that, the issue should have been dealt with a long time ago. It's too late now u can't withdraw a term which has been used worldwide for centuries.
