Recently, I had an opportunity to visit South Africa. A beautiful country with so many natural resources that it surpasses many other countries in its riches. With a per capita income that is twice as much as of Indians, the country suffers a 26% unemployment rate. The singular cause of such dismal state is lack of vision and leadership both during the Apartheid era and the post-apartheid era. If the white masters were heartless and corrupt, those leaders produced wealth and kept it for themselves. The new leadership are equally corrupt but produce nothing and keep all the bribes for themselves. Talking to the common black folks, I saw very little motivation to work hard and work ethic was lacking. They basically wanted the government to give things free. In contrast, I found illegal immigrants from Zimbabwe and Angola, willing to work hard. It is a shame that people are poor in a country that is endowed with so many riches.

It's even worse in informal settlements. People don't have anything. Literally living in shacks made of whatever materials are around. I feel for anyone who is living in poverty but white people here get a lot of help from other white people. Black people get no help. I'm a Registered nurse and part of what I do is community health care and education. Black people will stand in line for government assistance but most white people will not even if they need it they feel degraded to wait in line with poor blacks. A lot of white people who lost everything after apartheid were the ones who were not qualified for their jobs in the first place. I'm not saying our government is doing things right but comparing poverty in black communities to white communities is startlingly different.

There is a few things about this documentary that makes me both sad and angry. I did not, by any stretch of the imagination, grow up in the laps of luxury. I ate neon pink polony with my mom at times too, but it was not abject poverty either. I am a white South African and am Afrikaans speaking like most of these people. What saddens me is the intense poverty these people face. Their hopeless situation, especially the children. That is what angers me too, the children, why is it that each and every family living in absolute squalor has a baby or very young child? Their situation is not one that came about suddenly, most of them have been born into a life of poverty. They cry, demand and get angry that the government does not GIVE them housing, food and clothing. I do not see one of these people take that which is given free by the government, birth control! They tell in detail how they grew up eating moldy bread at Christmas, it couldn’t have been that bad if that is what you give your own child. That child didn’t have a choice, you the adult did. You cry in outrage that the government took away your first two children, because you couldn’t care for them, saying that their parents are the best place for them. Yet you went ahead and had another child, you are intensely selfish and self-entitled. The two children that where adopted out are far better off than the poor boy that stayed with these parents. The mentality of the parents are passed down to the children, this is a self-perpetuating cycle that is passed down from one generation to the next. And the all smoke!!! That is a very expensive habit for a person that have no food! Unfortunately this mentality is one that stretches across all skin colours and cultures in our beautiful country. Rather than change how you do things and teaching your children to do better and improve on you, you blame the government! That is a cop-out! Get off your pansy ass wash a car or mow a lawn, do something to get going you are not too white to do this! If you want to you will! Things can change for these children, but because they are taught that it is someone else’s responsibility to get them out of the hole they are in they will continue to wait for this person or institution to come and fix things instead of learning hard in school, getting a bursary or job and getting out! Well that is my 5 cents worth…

It had been a much no-fun when the wolf had the gun! Very sad to see growing children living in deplorable conditions. Worst of all when you go to bed in mind that you could be raided in the early morning by men in uniforms of brutality with glistening automatic rifles. One good turn centuries ago would have deserved another centuries ahead. A tour in Soweto would of given a much more diverse perspective of the post apartheid South Africa. It would take surely more than three decades to mend the spoils of three centuries of animosity and atrocity. May love reign in the hearts of people of all races, beliefs and cultures across the four corners of this world we all live in.

Listen you all, being poor is not a beautifull sight, any race. The question is, work oppertunity and are you willing to work hard. Nothing is free, you have to work. Any race would do anything to provide for their family. If you have work, any, keep your head high, have self respect. Don't feel sorry for yourself. You are a beautifull soul. God loves you. My mom died from cancer couple of years back. She used to say, you can be poor but you dont have to be a bum, keep where you live clean as yourself. Have compassion. One of the last things she said before dieing was, i love you, i love you all. And we were blacks and whites in the room. The lesson i took from that night was, the only job, the moist important job we all have on earh is LOVE. We have to love each other, Be christian. The haters here are AntiChrist. I truly dont want hate to rule my life. I am a white African female 45 years old. Grow up poor, went to school and started working in take aways. God has been by my side, never left me, even when a ate bread. Thank you God. Proud African, born African. Amen

I just checked the cost of cigarettes in South Africa: 30 rand. That same amount buys you two Cokes, or one beer, 45 minutes of a taxi's waiting time, a couple bottles of water or, I think, some kind of happy meal at McDonald's. So, it's an expense but not an extravagance. At the same time, the general cost of living in South Africa is around 50% lower than in the United States. It's always a good idea to quit smoking but it's a lot to ask of people already under that kind of pressure. It is possible to smoke cigarettes and be good parents.

In America I recently became unemployed 2021. I am a senior citizen. - I used to live in a grocery basket with my children in the street due to domestic violence and no shelter vacancies and also discrimination. If you were transient it was impossible to be employed unless you apply job with permanent house/land owner. ( As resident in charity shelter and this information on job apply you were automatically/repeatedly rejected.) I searched for work for a year -no job. ( As soon as I identify- apply different/other address resident as land owner/permanent house - I got a job in 24 hour.) Even federal police monitored my efforts and observed documents of activity and realized/proved the discrimination and developed an investigation. Federal police were involved due to government fed my children. South African poverty is extreme - corrupt - neglect and out of control.

Most of my cousins lost their parents to Apartheid Police brutality and my GGM and aunt had no choice but to raise us. Today we all have Masters and +level of education and own our businesses and two others work for government not the private sector BECAUSE who wants to be a modern slave 😂😂😂😂😂. The pain and endurance and staying away from alcohol and drugs has helped us and gave us strength to prosper and win and never forget where we came from. We have family documentedhistory book to remind us of the devil and his tricks 😃✌️😂

Reminds me in some ways of really economically depressed areas here in Australia back in the late 80s or early 90s. It's like it missed out on 2 decades of development. Welcome to the club. As a black, I am used to watch whites enjoying riches of this country. This is our way of life. We no longer complain. At last South Africans are becoming poor, not only black people. Now! Together, let’s work on the way forward. People are poor, not black people alone. This white guy is a true South African. He sees the real problem. The high IQs of all categories of South Africans must work. Poverty is not right for anybody irrespective of colour.

When will you learn that they will never see you as an equal. Why do you invite abuse? When someone shows you 'Who They are BELIEVE THEM!!!!'. Very painful to watch the exploitation and the mind set that you think these people see you as equals... please Africa wake up!!!!!
@Sabundy
@Sabundy 3 жыл бұрын
@@deborahtucker4900 you mean you have been spoon fed your American government's lies and propaganda that "China is taking over the continent"? China is both the largest trading partner and investor in all African countries. They saw opportunity where the West (the US included) just saw poor black people. Why shouldn't China reap the rewards for seeing Africa's potential? 8 out of the top ten fastest growing economies in the world are African countries. That's because of Chinese investment and business. Not because of America. And btw....most African countries (especially South Africa) are in debt to the IMF. Which last time I checked was an American led organization. And American and Western governments always had strings attached to everything. African countries must adopt your mind set, your politics, your values, your political systems......always dictating terms in exchange for anything. China on the other hand dictates nothing. They don't attempt to impose their values on Africans, nor their political system. They just want to do business. And last bit certainly not least......China has not overthrown any African governments (go educate yourself about what the US did to the Congo's first democratically elected president), isn't bombing any African countries like the US bombing Somalia right now (one of the poorest countries on Earth). I do hope Biden is putting BLM on the bombs he is happy to drop on black Africans. And China did not support and fund Apartheid (all in secret of course) for years, funding the SADF (Apartheid era South African military) invading neighbour African countries to prevent liberation movements from freeing themselves of European colonialism of African countries just because they were communists. Dont ever forget that Nelson Mandela was arrested because the CIA......your country's CIA told the Apartheid government where he was hiding. The US considered him a terrorist. Now what has China dome to Africans that is comparable? You don't understand the "African mindset" because you were born and raised in America and indoctrinated into whatever nonsense your government has told you about China and African countries. If you can't understand the relationship between China and Africa that is your problem.

So is 30% of South Africa unemployment due to drugs? Is 30% of the population on drugs? Drugs are a problem everywhere poverty isn't. Is this not maybe a convenient excuse not to care?

@Siyabonga Dube So then what would happen the poor? They just die off and then the world is rid of them. Regardless of what the government does or doesnt....these are still human beings. Remember the unemployment rates. Maybe if there were more employment available then post people would not be in this situation.

There is poverty in every country. It is up to those who are more fortunate to help those who CANNOT help themselves or need a leg up to help them get on their feet. It is an awful feeling to need help from someone else and be despised for needing help.

I know, right? I think what this video highlights is how people suddenly care that you're poor if you happen to be white. I'd love to see a documentary about the impoverished Coloured settlements - but notice how in every documentary regarding Coloured people, all they talk about is the crime as if it's the ONLY issue - nevermind the fact that crime exists because of POVERTY, so that should be the main issue. In fact, whenever we videos or documentaries about black or brown urban settlements, all you hear about is the crime. It's dehumanizing. I mean image; your family is hungry and struggling to make an income, and the camera man would rather focus on the gangster across the street. Also the hypocris I hate, because you still have people who say "they chose this life" or "why don't they just stop doing drugs" or "they should just get jobs", but when it's suddenly a white person in poverty they're all like "oh no, this is terrible" or "these precious people don't deserve to suffer" or "someone should help these poor souls". And it's like cry me a river, I've seen countless people with many different skin tones suffer and no one gave a damn. This all just reminds me of a quote; "no one cares about black pain unless it's entertaining."

Every country has the poor and the rich. There is no county with out poverty. Black or white we all have the same need as human . Why do we have to look down on the other in need. Let's live in love 🇵🇬

Yeah...where were these "food banks" when the Black poor South Africans were, and still are, suffering. To be honest, these "poor whites" don't look that bad off to me. I guess not having access to their full privilege is what makes their "plight" so difficult.

Hey, I have been there as I was married to an alcoholic and lived in the Salvation Army shelter in Benoni, and another homeless shelter by the airport in Boksburg. That was about 25 years ago and there is a way out. I now have a teaching degree and am now living a decent life in New Zealand and nanna to two beautiful grandchildren. Never give up hope, GOD is good. It just takes a lot of faith and effort on your part. Never give up hope. These stories are very sad and they make me cry, but also makes me grateful as it could easily have been me. I wish that I could save every one of you as SA is a cruel country for all races.

@Brad Smith It works both ways mate blacks get treated exactly the same wherever they are in the world. America, England ,France, Germany you name it blacks are discriminated against in the job market. Even the Bulgarian gypsies who are hated all over Europe still get opportunities over blacks.😣😣😣

I know it's been a whole year, but I'm only watching this now and I felt I needed to say something about it. The problem with doccies like this is that they are focusing on a single demographic of the poverty stricken population in South Africa. These are facts, yes I can understand that but just the wording of it puts me off because it implies that these white people being poor is a more important issue than the blacks or other POC being poor and it's just wrong. South Africa claims to be a rainbow nation but things like this just divide people more and more. It's almost like they don't want to get along. If they want things to turn around they should be focusing on fighting these issues as they affect EVERYONE, not just the white people. I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before, and it's really frustrating to see that some people in the comments think the way that they do. If this is how South Africans really think then shame... (P.S: I'm saying this about black, white, and everything in between and beyond.. It really doesn't matter. Y'all are just sounding mad ignorant on here)
