Welcome to this continuing series recorded in Greece called “Journeys with Paul.” This is Session #7 and it was recorded on the island of Crete, Greece’s largest and most southern island.
Paul visited Crete on his way to Rome. It’s mentioned in Acts 27: "When the wind did not allow us to hold our course, we sailed to the lee of Crete, opposite Salmone. When a gentle south wind began to blow, they saw their opportunity; so they weighed anchor and sailed along the shore of Crete. Before very long, a wind of hurricane force, called the Northeaster, swept down from the island. The ship was caught by the storm and could not head into the wind; so we gave way to it and were driven along” (Acts 27: 7, 13-15).
Paul left Titus on Crete for the purpose of providing leadership to the young and wayward church here. It must have been quite the challenge, given who these Cretans were: "For there are many rebellious people, full of meaningless talk and deception, especially those of the circumcision group. They must be silenced, because they are disrupting whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach-and that for the sake of dishonest gain. One of Crete’s own prophets has said it: “Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” (Titus 1:10-12).
But Paul (and Titus) were all about continuing to allow the transforming nature of the Gospel of Christ to change people. The Good News how one becomes a believer in Christ appears a few chapters later, "But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit, whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heir having the hope of eternal life” (Titus 3:4-8).
Are you trusting in Christ? We are saved by His grace and not the things we do. We don't deserve nor can we earn salvation by our “good works.” All of us have fallen short of God’s standard of perfection. Yet through Christ we can be saved!
