Planting & Growing Fall Potatoes

Finally, a video that easily explains the planting of potatoes. With everyone else, it seemed like I needed to go to university to plant potatoes. At times I thought about giving up gardening because all the incomplete information, It caused me confusion and stress. Thank you very much for taking the time to make everyone better gardeners.

Something I heard which make sense is if you plant in buckets you can dig a hole and stick your bucket in it. This way the soil stays cooler

I just planted fall potatoes today, 8/1. Using grow bags. Did about 35 pounds in spring planting. Hoping 20-30 for fall too.

So great Jill- you have some of the most detailed and practical information out there. I'm going to try a fall potato experiment! I'm in New Mexico 7b. I'll be using grow bags and apply your learning on grow lights in my greenhouse when the light starts to wane. I'm excited to see what happens!

Last year was the first time that I grew potatoes in the fall and I’ve been gardening for 15+ years. I didn’t know what I was doing, and I put him in grow bags and just covered them up actually with a comforter that I had an old one when it got really cold down here in Savannah Georgia. I was zone 8B but now 9A so I’m curious to see how things work this year being in a different zone I don’t think that really matters any just in my opinion. And the way I grew my potatoes a layer of soil and then I put the potatoes down, then another layer soil and more potatoes but I put them in different spots in the bag so they weren’t on top of each other if that makes any sense. Let’s see how it goes this year! I’ll keep you posted! Thank you for all you do, I appreciate everything that you talk about because it has helped me.

Hot soil…makes sense. I want them to grow well in grow bags because it’s so convenient, but they’re impossible to keep well watered and the black fabric makes the soil so hot.

They make light colored bags which I recommend. Also cover the top with about 1-2 inches of straw. Helps so much reflecting the heat away from soil and keeping the soil moist.

I’m a first time potato grower in zone 7b in TX. I’m starting with only 1/2 lb of Dark Red Norland seed potatoes from Wood Prairie (4 potatoes) that I planted this morning (08/03) in two 15 gallon grow bags. I fertilized with Trifecta from MIGardener and used Fox Farm Happy Frog potting soil. Who knows what will happen, but I’ll let you know. Have you used shade cloth over your potatoes in the very hot, intense sun we get through summer to September? I have some 50% shade cloth that I thought I might use. Also, I have some GardenStraw that I thought I’d cover the soil with to help hold moisture and keep soil temp a little cooler. What are your thoughts?
