I got the green stalk planter to grow strawberries in a couple of years ago.we had on the patio. It worked wonderfully, in fact my brother in law visiting out of state ordered one as soon as he got home. I did purchase the cover for the planter to protect the plants over winter. Love that you can take apart to refresh and clean out any weeds.

Since you posted the video a year ago, you probably already know that your choice of berries is SUPERB! I grow those same berries in Western Washington, and they do very well. I also grow Quinault strawberries, and they fare just as well. Last year, we had cold, wet, yucky weather clear up until the end of June. My berries were just getting ready to ripen when I went out of town for 4 days. While I was gone, the temperature shot up to over 100° F. My strawberries are in FULL sun. I thought for sure they would be frizzled, but not only did they survive, but they were thriving upon my return. They were second year plants, and the berries were huge and sweet. The plants also seemed to double in size, so I had to remove some to give away. I still have way too many plants from last year, which is why I am repotting the babies into a tower for my porch. I started my bed with 6 plants (2 of each kind), and by the end of the first season, I had 48 plants. ALL of them survived that heat wave last season (2022), and I ended up with over 100, after giving away around 30 (I ran out of pots, otherwise I would have given away more). So, yes, you definitely chose very good varieties.

I do not have. You tube channel …but what I “do” notice with all the channels I have subscribed “to” … ever mix the PROMIX with water in the wheelbarrow BEFORE you put it in the container and plant the item .. It is such a dry medium I find that if you don’t “moisturize” it FIRST …it will sink to almost half …AFTER you give it the first watering …

I bought my greenstalk leaf last summer - the green one, and I love it! It grew amazing lettuce and spinach last fall. I bought everbearing ozark starts last week and plan to plant them today since it’s sunny. I’m excited for your side by side comparison - and hoping the leaf provides itself! I couldn’t find anyone planting them in the leaf so I just decided to go for it. I love that you’re testing this out! 🙂

The great thing about the Greenstalk planters is that the tiers are interchangeable in a vertical stack. You could've used 2 or 3 of the original and 2 or 3 of the Leaf tiers on the same stack, instead of having two different stacks, to test the pocket size to see which would be better for the plants.

@sandyg3772 Жыл бұрын
I planted Ozark Beauty, Eversweet, and Quinault. All of them produced berries the first season. The berries doubled in size the second season. Allowing the runners to grow to the first baby plant did not reduce my harvest at all, either. I would recommend these 3 types to anyone.

I tried strawberries in my Greenstalk last year (Spring 2021). They were varieties suited for the southern Californian coastal zone (Zone 10). I used a potting soil I mixed myself, one that I have used with good results in planters over the years. Results were not good: The strawberry plants died one by one over the spring and through the summer. I was careful with watering and rotating the Greenstalk stack to maximize exposure to the sun. I am an experienced gardener with over 70 years of growing plants in all sorts of environments, soils, and climate zones. So I'm puzzled by my lack of success here. There are a few plants left but they are not doing well, whereas the snow peas I planted in the empty cells are doing very well as are a few succulents and flowers I am trying. I did manage to save a few plants that gave off runners and I planted these in containers. Right now they are loaded with fruit. I'll find other uses for the Greenstalk, but I found it a waste of time as far as strawberries are concerned. I'll be interested in hearing how Jill will do with her plants.

That is interesting! I’m so sorry it didn’t work out for you. I’ll be watching mine closely for sure!

@thebeginnersgarden2 жыл бұрын
They both did well through the summer. I did end up losing several of one variety so I think that was an issue with the variety and not the Greenstalk. We'll see how the Greenstalks compare through the winter though with the strawberry plants.

Yes, it does. I do enjoy the spinner when the planter remains in the same place, but it’s easier to “move” the mover than to move the spinner on wheels.

Your soil plan would not work in our area. With a loose soil and nothing to hold in the water, I would be chained to the green stalk 24/7. Our summer temps have been at a steady 102 for the past 4 months and sometimes to 107. Even with watering every other day, the heat dries out plants very quickly. I have to lightly spray with water each section of the green stalk every other day as well as watering from the water trough on the top of thee green stalk. Using vermiculite or peat moss in the soil helps a great deal. This would apply to all southern states. Smaller container size of the green stalk probably works better for strawberries b/c of their small root system which doesn't go 10" deep. Same for lettuce.
