I've had Greenstalks for several years (the company is local to me so I've used them since before they got big) and none of my 9 towers have ever had an issue with tipping. The sections are pretty heavy when wet so they lock together. I have seen people in areas with crazy winds have occasional issues, but honestly the closest I've ever had was when I almost pushed it over while moving it. If you are careful where you push or pull (ie: not from the upper sections), you will be good.

I’ve had one for a couple years now. FYI, they do not come with the base. That is sold separately as are the wheels. I love my greenstalk (classic size). I’ve grown peppers, squash, flowers and herbs in it. Rachel from That 1870’s Homestead grew decent sized cabbage in hers last year. They really are great for people who have small spaces and want to grow some food.

Planted up my new Greenstalk with 47 bare root strawberries in March. Then San Diego got a full winter's rain in March & early April, which drowned & rotted almost every plant! Had to go back to the nursery for new plants. Even though I already added extra perlite to my promix potting mix, I added even more when replanting, and very slightly widened the drain holes. The new baby plants are enjoying a warm May-grey, and then they will get a warmer June-gloom, plenty of time to establish themselves before the hot months. So sad about the dead bara root plants, though.

We very much enjoys your videos,and have gotten a lot of useful info from them over the years. We have a five tier Greenstalk we purchased last year and successfully grew winter greens in it. We purchased a seven tier (shallower pockets) unit this spring and filled with everbearing strawberries gifted us by a friend who was thining her strawberry bed. Have been pleased with it so far. (Getting lots of juicy red strawberries!) One thing you failed to mention in your video that is in the instructions is to keep the top reservoir clean so dirt doesn't clog the tiny drip holes in it and the water pans for the lower levels. (I also noted you were filling yours in the video with a little dirt in it.) Hope you will share that in a future video. Keep the great info coming. Thanks! Ed

I have a 7 layer leaf greenstalk filled with strawberries that I love. The base is sold separately (as are the wheels for it) but I highly recommend the "Ultimate Spinner Base" (which is what you have). Don't know if I would buy the wheels again but it is nice to have the ability to roll it closer to the house and cover is when we are expecting a frost. I've heard that because of their weight, they stand up OK to wind, but wheels would also give you the option to move it to a more sheltered location if there was a concern. Greenstalks are also great for people with limited growing space. I prefer the Leaf over the Original style as I would never try to grow something large like full sized tomatoes or deep rooted carrots in one. The Leaf is great for strawberries, herbs, and salad greens.
@amyparker1762
@amyparker1762 Жыл бұрын
For those on the smaller stature side, like me, you might consider putting the first container on the base, fill with soil, plant, water then stack the 2nd container on it. Fill plant and water and repeat. Unlike Brian, this planter is much taller than I am and lifting a full container over my head to secure on the top would be impossible for me 😂. I have two green stalks the same height as Brian’s both loaded with strawberries 🍓. Great product. Great company. Happy gardening ❤

I love my GreenStalk! One note of warning - be careful not to have your soil right up against the watering disks. The tiny holes can get clogged and then that level won't get watered. I was having an issue last year with lower levels not getting water, and when I took it apart that was the issue. As a bonus, I also had a family of frogs living in there!

I purchased a 3 level GreenStalk this spring for strawberries and they are really filling in now with fruit and foliage. I ran a 1/4 drip tube up the center into the reservoir and terminated it with an emitter that is adjustable so as to somewhat fill the reservoir on a given cycle for when we are gone for more than a couple of days. It's in full sun all day so it does dry out rapidly. I also fill it with water from the rain barrel from time to time.
@geeyoupee
@geeyoupee Жыл бұрын
I have my greenstalk near my dragon fruit trellis. I put a 1/4 tube and a adjustable sprayer on top of the greenstalk so it can be irrigated when my drip irrigation goes on. It's a bit hard to fine tune the emitter to get the right amount of watering. I get lazy and don't really turn the greenstalk much. This year, I'm planting 1 side with plants that need full sun and the other side that can tolerate shade (lettuce, greens, herbs, etc.). So I'll face the sun loving side towards the sun most of the time. I planted strawberries in the bottom 3 layers so my daughters can pick them. The spinning base makes it easy to spin, it's expensive but probably worth it over the wheels. I initially bought this to plant herbs and put near my backyard door but that area didn't get enough sun so I had to move it out further. I think its a great alternative for people who don't have a lot of space but in ground beds are best due to how forgiving they are and less maintenance. City Pickers and patio pickers are another good alternative that self waters.

If there's no stopper water will just go straight down to the bottom. Also, we have trade winds here and the green stalk holds up well. Some of my older strawberry plants finally called it quits last year. They were four or five. 9:14

Excellent video. You're a great instructor. I've seen a few youtube videos from homesteaders/gardeners that have not done as great a video, so until your video, I'm going to order one for strawberries. Because your strawberry information was also very helpful. Thank you :)

Baby Strawberries, I have used clothespins on small cups of dirt to train the babies to root. Sometimes its difficult to reach the pockets.

The GreenStalk is the very reason why I have mentioned to have your concrete terrace bed wells have their own aperatures in them - planting strawberries in the concrete wall, and they will flourish in that vertical environment, which was previously wasted. Any watering of the terraced plants also waters the strawberries - or one can shower the walls and strawberries for their own water needs.

I’ve seen these in other videos but you are the first one to show how to fill and stack it. It looks like a great idea

I would love to get one and put strawberries in it. Wondering what to do with the plants in the winter. I am in zone 6b and the temperature can drop to below zero.

I have 3, 2 in the garden and another still in the box waiting for me to decide on a spot to put it. one is the original 5 tier deep pocket, second is the shallower pocket 7 tier leaf, and the third is a mix of both they call the inventors bundle that has 3 deep and 3 shallow tiers.

I have a few adjustments I need to do on mine. Basically I have to take it apart and start over again 😢 entirely my fault. I bought another brand and I’m not very happy with it so I’m going to replace it with another green stalk. I currently have two green stalks and another off brand. I just need to replace the soil and start over. Right now somehow a raspberry bush planted itself in one of my green stalks. 🤣🌷💚🙃

Had a different tower planter but couldn’t keep it watered enough. This may have solved that prob. We’ll see.

Look on YT how to refresh the potting mix. Super easy so you dont throw out. Just add stuff to it.

I have three greenstalks and I have my strawberries in one of them. I have herbs in the other and lettuce in the last one. One thing that you didn’t show was the drain tube on the bottom that you can direct anywhere you want to. One thing about strawberries is that you need to feed them every two weeks to get the best results.

Timely video! I just got my first Greenstalk delivered today! Same color and unit as yours with the spinning base, but no wheels. I've got herbs and lettuces and bush beans planned for it and have the seedlings nearly ready for transplanting. The beans I can direct sow. I'm going to have to spin it 180 degrees daily as I will have it up against the outside house wall in the garden unless I can plant the other half with shade loving plants for the Summer, so I may have to plan that out a little more. The location will get partial shade, so I'm hoping to keep the rabbits out of it. I'm on the Gulf Coast in west central Florida. Good luck! I want to do strawberries in it also.

This looks like an upgrade to the original type strawberry tower used years ago - held about 50 plants, I now grow in hanging baskets and a free standing veg planter. Don't think this is available in the UK.

One important note: when assembling the greenstalk, it is absolutely necessary to prevent ANY soil/debri from getting into water reservoirs. For those of us that fill it by layer by layer because we don't have strength to lift a full section. I cover the drain hole with a small bottle. Then when complete, the top reservoir has to be protected from any debris, I made a cover for it and always check before watering.
