To me, it's not "fragrance addition" as such, but "shopping addiction". It can be quite pervasive into one;s life, e.g. constant searching about scents, reading fragrantica, checking ebay, facebook groups and I've been here before myself. I was also in a position of buying new stuff despite being in debt but now I've been out of debt for a long time and don't plan to go back into it because of fragrances. I started off just buying frags blindly without even knowing the types of scents that I liked, I've ended up selling more bottles than I own now - and I own around 100 frags (more bottles though due to stupidly buying "back ups" that I'll never use up). Decants? god, I have maybe 120-150 of those alone. It's stupid. As a (small time) reviewer I've bought a lot of stuff for the purpose of training my nose and to smell a wide variety of scents but ended up not talking about many of them. I lost the interest with sprays and seeking out new scents, they just don't interest me. My channel has never been about chasing views or hype, I do my own thing based on my own preferences.

Thanks a lot for reaching out to Joy and supporting him. His a great guy and he has achieved this by sheer hard work.. Bangladesh just like India is not a country where we have access to many Fragrance brands let alone discounted. And he did it for his passion and his subscribers. I'm sure he'll bounce back pretty soon. And thanks for your advices ... this is not valid only for the Fragrance reviewers but also for the fragheads... going into debts to pursue your hobby is not good and trying to buy every new or hyped Fragrance is not sustainable in the long run. Thanks once again.

I loved this video. Thanks for touching on these things. I'll miss Joy. As far as the addiction of this hobby, I personally had to take a few steps back after my first couple of years. Needed to reevaluate how much I was accumulating that I didn't need and I had to purge some of it. Made myself a rule that I wouldn't own more than 25 bottles (not including backups) to save my mental health and my wallet. I realized that while I love fragrance for the art of it, I am not rich enough to be a real collector and I only want things I'll want to wear on a regular basis. Life is too short for frags I "like", I'm only gonna own frags I love and I'm limiting that number to 25.

Everything that starts as an innocent and fun hobby gets corrupted very fast if it’s not kept it in check. Great video, I’m new to the fragrance community, even though I have been a fragrance aficionado for a long time, way before the internet became a thing and just started to get involved with the KZbin and Facebook frag community. When something gets out of control the need of support is imminent, just like any other addiction does wether is alcohol, eating, sex or drugs, the brain’s need for satisfaction or dopamine makes us do stuff without thinking or once the fun and enjoyment becomes stress and hardship. Thanks again for the great video.

I'm relatively new to this game. My journey is quite recent. However, from the get-go I realized I'll go broke if I go down the full-bottles-rabbit-hole. So after 10 bottles I decided to top at 20 bottles - only for very few magical scents or an extreme special offer (of used, half full testers at a ridiculous low price) - and switch to decants and samples. And indeed I have less than 20 new full bottles, few decants, and gazillion samples of wonderful scents (and a few testers). My entire "collection" could fit on one small shelf, and yet I have a large variety of scents/juices and a happy bank account. "A perfume" is the whole kit and caboodle : package, presentation etc. "A scent" is just the juice. So I am not a 'perfume collector', yet I'm a fraghead. I call my self a 'sample collector', or better still - a scent lover. I am also guilty of being an addict - but I am not addicted to 'retail therapy' and purchasing. I'm addicted to scents - I carry samples with me everywhere I go, and sniff them throughout the day 🙂 - I don't know which addiction is worse 😶.

Let me starts with this..That big mouth as you said i probably what I like some times the most, but also the knowledge that you provide, I agree with you 100% One of the reasons I stop watching most of the reviewers is that, some have given themselves that kind of celebrities status, and do not bring anything new as a reviewer so, I don't waste my time watching them anymore. Now about Joy he is great guy I watch his videos when I get time, and I do talk to him a lot on FB very jumble person. Now about the other topic, Addiction is very real, I am and have been addicted for the past 5 years, and I am struggling with some many other issues but after watching Eugine did that video I thought hard that I am not the only one, and I'm trying to learn that I do not paid retail price anymore, like you said, I do Not have to buy the releases first, Hard but I am getting better , 99% of my buys are now on discounters. Great video Rob.. Personally I feel very connected or familiar with the subject, overall I watched the whole video, i felt in the need to, and I hope you get to read this long message. Cheers man. 👃👍💪

Yourself and joy are two people who could actually talk in front of a camera and make it interesting without even having a bottle to use as a subject, i dont think many others can do this, I have lost interest in fragrances because of some of the materialistic aspects and the addictive side of it, I also don't like how so many reviewers are trying to make a living with sponsored reviews and affiliate links to amazon to make commission . I still like scents but not the way you tubers are pushing them for their own benefit. Great video, thanks. Ps. One of the other things that caused me to lose interest is the whole jeremy fragrance thing where you have someone being so called at the top of the tree just taking advantage of people for his own benefit, that guys antics made me really mad at times and frustrated that others seem to be blind to his methods. I dont want to watch things that make you feel that way.

I quite like Joy's videos - I agree, no need for fancy editing, no need to show sexy girls or sports cars in fragrance reviews - sometimes simple is best. I want HONEST and detailed reviews, thats' why I'm your subscriber Marc, since early 2012. You started my journey - and I have my two cents to add right now. At one point I became addicted as well. Nearly went into debt (I have another passion aside from fragrances - mechanical watches). In my first two years into the game I bought nearly 160 bottles. Luckily, I stopped just before I crossed the red line. I feel sorry for Joy, especially because he went into debt doing something good for community (while for me it was only to please myself). It is very easy to put yourself into danger and yes, I think it is a problem. If it comes to hate on youtube - I never say a bad word about people, because I know, that those people I'm subscribing doing hard work, so even when I disagree with some of the reviews (for example, because of Joy I bought few juices, and I was disappointed with two of them, Rasasi Shuhrah and Daarej, which I really didn't like. Same with you Marc, while I have very similar taste, I disagree with your opinion on Fahrenheit - but what is important, I never say bad word about you or Joy because of that. I understand we can have slightly different point of view, and I rather appreciate the fact, that most of the fragrances I love - I discovered thanks to you, or someone else). Thank you very much Marc and Joy for all your hard work and apologize for long comment, usually I do not comment on videos (maybe I should). Btw. "top dog" doesn't mean much for me, I think this is all wrong on youtube frag. community - you should hang out with creators, which have similar taste as you, because you won't be disappointed. And for those, who are stuggling with money to buy juices - there's no need to buy expensive fragrances to enjoy this game. You don't need to use Creed's GIT every single day, while much cheaper and still high quality Guerlain Vetiver will please your nose. This is just example, and problem is - most of the "top dogs" reviewers focus on super expensive new releases. Example of that - I had Molinard Figue (and few others), and literally nobody reviewed those fragrances, I think you were the first one just few months ago, Marc. It's affordable and high quality juice - why "top dogs" ignoring it? I leave it for all of you to answer. This is the wrong way community turned into, in my opinion. Anyway, thanks both of you for your hard work guys, it means a lot to me.

never understood those youtubers that always buy the biggest bottles and even buy some back up bottles. Like you said: sampling is a good way for reviewing. Plus reviewers should review what they like, not the latest newest releases. Reviewing a fragrance is not about having 1000 bottles but about telling the viewers what you think about a certain fragrance. I feel the urge to buy a fragrance when someone is lyric about it too but the latest newest buy isn't always the best.
