Grew up in an orthodox Mormon home. Some people argue that Mormonism isn't a cult, but either way my parents and community sure made it one lol. People don't understand that it's not like you suddenly see the light and you're completely free. Because you were taught (when your brain was forming) that doubting or thinking for yourself is such a threat, you have to overcome that before you can even start addressing the beliefs. Unwinding the conditioned thinking that was programmed into you from birth takes time, focused effort, therapy and support. It's taken me years and I still catch thinking patterns or assumptions or biases that are from childhood. I'm in my 50's. So I do hope everybody is patient and kind with the Duggar adult children, the Brown adult children, and the OG3. :)
@UnPluggingThePlayer6 ай бұрын
And yet there are reality vloggers that claim a cult, or a TLC show parenting isn't a reason to explain adult kids major problems (like the Brown guys self exit.) These people's lives are different than other mixed up families. They have very different emotional beliefs dynamics to sort out. Like you said, many never escape or know that it's not healthy. Good luck to you.

I feel the same... I found Jill to be open and honest..and I just hope she continues on with her professional therapy and free's herself even more.. There is so much more she can have in her life to make her whole and happy! I can't imagine a parent stealing from their child, and making them feel bad to be getting what they were entitled to, from the very beginning.. That money should have been in an account for each child from day 1, and collecting interest.. He had the audacity to say she owed for food and a place to live and clothes, etc... That was their choice to have all those kids and good parents would never say you owe this much for us raising you.. What a creep...This made me sick...

Seeing Joy-Anna's reaction to Jinger's book has changed my perspective on that book and, particularly, what she was trying to accomplish with it. It's easy to write it off, like I did initially, as wishy-washy and not going far enough - but I realise now that I felt that way because I wasn't the target audience. It's important to remember that, like Katie said, having everything you've ever believed questioned can be earth-shattering, so it needs to be done gently and empathetically, at a comfortable pace. As much as many of us want to rush in and free these young people (especially the girls) from this cult, Rome wasn't built in a day. It takes time to get away from belief systems like the IBLP, and Jinger's book probably feels like a welcoming and friendly first step to those who need it. I see that now and applaud Jinger for realising it was needed (as Joy-Anna's reaction proves) and providing it in an accessible way 💕 Writing it in such a way that her parents wouldn't ostracise her for it has probably helped to keep it accessible to those who need it. Well played, Jinger 👍💖

So happy Joy has woken up and making steps to get out. Also happy her and Austin are choosing a different direction in raising their children. With her being inspired by Jinger hopefully Joy's journey will help the younger girls get out too. I wish her the best.

I actually went through something like this, on a smaller scale there were only 5 of us, things like shorts tank tops or going to the movies were evil it got that way little by little but when he started saying his right hand blessed whatever he touched I knew I had to leave! Ended up going to my 18 year old sister whom had a 4 year old at the time and well that was a whole other shit show Through that I never gave up my faith in God!!! I think Joy Anna will continue to seek answers, we’ll never stop learning 😊😊😊

Dollars to donuts I bet Jim Bob will say her PPD is causing her to question her IBLP upbringing. Of course, then he’d have to admit PPD is real…

So happy for Joy for getting on this route and continuing to do so. At the same time, I would like to see Joy eventually go onto read Jill's book. She deserves to have a healthier better life.

I think one of the saddest parts is once they break free of a cult like religion they tend to gravitate towards another cult/fringe religion. I’m curious to see where these adults end up in their religious journey. Love your channel, Katie sending lots of love from Canada. 🇨🇦

Now that I think about it, while Jinger's book did look too beating around the bush to us outsiders, the way she wrote it was probably in a very effective way to reach insiders like Joy Anna. As much as we'd like to shake them and say "You're in a cult!" that simply doesn't work on most people. To deconstruct them from their cult; it often has to be done very gently and very slowly. Jinger's book is probably a good example of what people in this cult need to hear in order to start deconstructing from it.

I completely agree with Joy Anna about the dating thing and I’ve been saying it for some time. You teach your children to do what is right but then you’re not going to trust them to do it? What kind of nonsense is that?

I wish someone had asked the question about education. Will they now promote education with their children and encourage college…something none of them were ever encouraged to do.

Jill is, her boys go to actual schools and I think she’s been getting an education too. I’d like to see Joy do the same as having little ones around whilst trying to teach older ones can’t be easy. I definitely benefited from having one at school and the other being new born, it was good for me to have breather.

I always wondered about the chaperone thing. If your children are deemed by you to be old enough to marry and can’t be trusted to make their own decisions, something is wrong. Jim Bob is a control freak and seems to be obsessed with sex. Also teaching girls that it is the girls fault if a young man acts inappropriately has always left me wondering. Do these young men have no self control.? Each one of us is responsible for our own behavior

Most people learn Critical Thinking in High School and College. One of my Organizational Leadership classes taught us classmates all about critical thinking. It started with Socrates and the Socratic method. Question everything.

Thank You for getting back to the Duggars. I wish you would do more videos about them. I want to know if the younger girls are ok and if they will be able to escape. I care more about the females and what's happening with them regarding independence.

At 72 amd like many, my world has been rocked a few times and I'm still here. Everything I've gone through or been put through, is still in my mind and I'm better than just okay. Joyanna wiil be, as they say, "fine". Though she'll never lose the memories of years and moments that traumatized her, and will always carry scars, I believe she will learn to keep them in their place, in time. I remember watching the Duggar shows years ago. I remember seeing Joyanna and Austin working together on a house they were renovating and thinking how at ease they were with esch other and happy to spend time together. She was in her Birkenstocks and right in there working with Austin. Then they renovated and lived in a trailer and were still happy. Over time I learned about Austin's background. Though I can't be specific, there was something different, something missing in Austin that screamed "lockstep cult member" in the Duggar boys and Jimbob. When Katie posted the video about Joyanna seeking medical care, and counselor for post partum depression, knowing her childhood, I still don't believe she would have sought help unless Austin supported her. And, that means he was never a good cult follower even though he was raised in it. I think Joyanna and Austin are very close and have a good marriage. They will get through the first times, and keeping going. They both have support from Ginger and probably Jeremy. Jill's book was maybe too blunt, at this time, for Joyanna; that doesn't mean she hasn't talked to her, and will never read her book. Joyanna needs to take all the time she wants and I think she will. She may get push back from her parents or some siblings. Even though she's just started, she knows she's gone too far to turn around.

I thought it was inevitable that Joy & Austin would leave the Cult after sitting through the trial, listening to what Josh did to her & her sisters and also hearing Jim-Bob making an arse of himself trying to deny that it ever happened with his "It was so long ago I don't remember" B.S. testimony. I tell you it was a good thing that Josh was in custody & Austin couldn't get his hands on him because if he could've, he likely would've beaten Josh to a pulp, he looked so angry!!! Staying with a cult that not only allowed that kind of s*** to go on wouldve been really hypocritical.

Switching from the IBLP to Reformed Theology isn’t as big of a jump as you may be thinking it is.

Baby steps are good, as long as they continue, imo. It would be extremely difficult and unusual, for someone to deconstruct, even a young lifetime, of indoctrination in one fell swoop. Being taught not to think or ask questions, just OBEY, is something that takes MANY years of re-learning. I have a lot of experience with that.

This is a great video. The way my husband and view it, religion does not mean you have to follow their doctrines to have a relationship with God and Jesus. Instead we are building that relationship directly. I admire what these Duggar girls are doing for themselves. It truly is an individual choice and not something that someone can decide for someone else.

I am so happy that Joy Anna is breaking from the cult. I think this explains some of her depression. She was feeling repressed, but now is breaking free. However, I am still puzzled why she is giving Jinger most of the credit for awakening her. It still seems like Jill is being shaded.
