The peaks and troughs in this song are like life itself. Always eerie listening to Ian's lyrics in a context forty years after his death. Interviews you read or hear from bandmates never saw his suicide coming despite the bleakness of his lyrics. I guess his contemporaries just saw it as art or provocative in some way. This ranks as one of their greatest songs for sure. The rawness and unbridled mental anguish that that poor man suffered can only be imagined, a burden I wouldn't wish on anyone.
