The peaks and troughs in this song are like life itself. Always eerie listening to Ian's lyrics in a context forty years after his death. Interviews you read or hear from bandmates never saw his suicide coming despite the bleakness of his lyrics. I guess his contemporaries just saw it as art or provocative in some way. This ranks as one of their greatest songs for sure. The rawness and unbridled mental anguish that that poor man suffered can only be imagined, a burden I wouldn't wish on anyone. Your spirit lives on young man x

The depths you go sometimes can't be comprehended by a normal, untainted soul. It is happening again, another love is being thrown away due to my insecurities. Yet there is so much to pay, the price of a mistake is so high. I wish I couldn't love, it would be ten thousand times better than feeling hopeless, like I feel right now.
