@JPBOUVET
Caution, this solo may expose short attention spans.
This is an improvised drum solo. It was recorded at a store called "Russo" (awesome store) in Asbury Park, NJ during the first leg of the Common Thread Clinic Tour.
Thank you Jeff Holcomb for your help filming.
Thank you DW, Meinl, Remo, Vic Firth, and Ahead Armor
Thank you, Russo, for being a passionate, well-run music store.
And thank you for watching.
JP

Seeing a lot of ignorant comments here. Which isn't to say you aren't allowed to dislike his solo, but far too many people are writing this off because of his pants, or the fact that he doesn't launch right into a Royster-esque barrage of chops from the get-go. I for one find it impressive how fully he develops the central idea: quintuplets. Count it. Until about 5 minutes in he rides on grooves that all fall into 5 note groupings. And he expresses this feel of 5 in a variety of ways. So slick.

i think the idea was to take an idea, and essentially orchestrate it around the kit in as many different ways as possible, while still staying somewhat true to that idea. it doesn't necessarily need to be complicated to be a good solo. i really dig this.

He randomly plays the bass with the same rhythm for almost three minutes straight. It just wasn't very musical. Thankfully he ended that and began playing the instrument. I respect his abilities for sure. I just feel that at times, stylistically, it's unskilled to his abilities and tasteless.

That’s what Tony would do! Some crazy long double stroke roll for two or three minutes 😂 and Dennis Chambers would place something like take 5 with double bass drum underneath for 5 minutes building up to an explosion! I’ve been checking out JD’s drum lessons for the past year and this guy is probably one of the best Drum teacher on planet earth.

JPs solos tend to give me the chills. There are parts that are so monotonous that they actually give the creeps, I've used this analogy before, but kind of like the eerie music in horror movies. Also, there are moments during this solo where it looks like he was filmed with lower frames per second because he's moving so fast. I really liked this.

Everyone trashing this solo obviously didn't watch past the first 3 minutes (which admittedly I ended up skipping). There's some serious groove work for the rest of the solo, some of my favourite playing I've seen from JP. He's a modern great for sure.

I love how JP really rides on certain themes in his solos for a while. A lot of dudes will just throw quick chop after quick chop atcha, and while that's certainly impressive, I think guys like JP, Greb, Guiliana, Johnston, Halpern, etc. who really establish recurring themes and ideas in their solos are the really exciting ones to watch. Sick stuff!

Technical playing is only awesome for me when there is awesome musicality involved. The real beauty in the drums lies in when you can play for the entire audience. Look at Vinnie Colaiuta with Sting. Insane chops, simple grooves, the way he uses his polyrhythmic ideas in a pop context, amazing to drummers but to everyone else it just sounds good and funky. Its like when you go to a kids movie and they chuck in a sex joke for the adults that only adults get, but u still cant forget about the kids

I appreciate the slow build, but I felt it went a little too long. Obviously a sick amount of talent there but I like my solo grooves a little more, well, groovy. Got my undivided attention around that 6 minute mark though. Kids pretty amazing, just a little too heavy handed for my personal taste. YES haters you can still appreciate talent even if it isn't your particular thing. Doesn't mean he sucks or someone is better. Ie the guy who introduced him (Mike Johnson) is amazing, but I'm guessing he would be the first to say he's not "better".

Intro was way toooo long, and the bass didn't sound tight. I know what he was going for, its common with most known drummers but people there were just like uh? Its not all about chops to impress, but there wasn't much of anything. Should have picked a better foundation groove.

This solo is absolutely fantastic and I just Love it, so much technicality and so much feel and groove and just overall awesomeness. Not your most musical solo, but the repeated themes at the beginning and the end blew me away, it was great! The weakest part though in my opinion is the ride segment @7:15, because it loses a lot of the attack and drive the solo hand and the groove doesn't really seem to fit very well with the rest of the solo, but none the less I enjoyed this solo SO much!
@bighousedrums
@bighousedrums 11 жыл бұрын
everyone has different opinions and we need to respect each other!!! nobody likes the same things, so that doesn't mean we should bash each other for being that way!!! as for this drummer JP, he obviously knows what he is doing, its a solo, a freestyle to demonstrate his talent... the poly-rhythmic patterns and time signature changes he is doing throughout this video are fantastic. step out side the the box and listen
@sean.jamieson
@sean.jamieson 11 жыл бұрын
Um... hence why he probably one the drum off... competitions have nothing musical about them. Its a chops fest. Technique and tricks and this year gimmick rule supreme. Its still Fun to watch... JP can be musical tho, just check out the actual music he's featured in. You've got to look at the context of the playing tho, its a drum clinic. This would be the only time he could fuck around with these ideas out in the open without getting fired, or winning a comp :)

I think he's just one of those guys who can sit and shed drums for hours man, HOURS. He'll split up his practice time into sections and one of them will be double kick stuff. I wish I had the dedication and organisational skills to do what it takes to get to JPs level. I didn't realise my comment would lead to us both lamenting about our own playing haha. I think I came across as a dickhead,know-it-all in my last post, sorry about that.
@AJEdward
@AJEdward 11 жыл бұрын
No but it doesn't sound very nice when it's out of rhythm all the time, yeah all the other solo's are nothing of original but the lack of rhythm in this doesn't sound out of the box or indeed musical at all, out of the box would be extremely emphasized off rhythm or poly-rhythmic or something, this is just....sounds like he hasn't quite got it in the bag, not out of the box like you suggest.
@return2energiser

Thanks for the response man. Yeah it's just JP seems a lot more concerned with so many other parts of drumming that I find it insane that he has double bass chops like this. I guess i'm just jealous haha. I myself practice double bass far too much and don't receive near the same results. I guess we're all different and find different things more challenging
@longdrums
@longdrums 11 жыл бұрын
I very much doubt he got this good at double kick without practising every day man. For the new breed of pro's out there, double kick isn't just for the metal guys. There are huge amounts of players progressing all aspects of drumming but the real progression is coming from the feet these days and JP is at the forefront.

I was very uninterested at first. Then the chops came in and it got far more musical, and eventually became a very technical piece that only a few drummers could actually replicate. The best part was that he stayed with the exact same base beat without really showing it, but then came back to it at the very end. Amazing!

Technically= Fantastic Musically= ....not so much. I do see where he's going in the solo, just it's not my cup of tea. He seems to meet the liking of a rather small niche. Great drummer, i'd love to see him play in a sort of funk/techno/metal setting mix and see him strive.

Technical drum playing is awesome, but for those who don't understand the theory side of drumming which is probably most of the music "fan" (not musician) population, it just sounds like random shit. Which is probably why this was boring for a lot of people.

the ability to play a variety of polyrhythms shows that he's mastered time which is one of few key components to being a considerably amazing drummer. those components being time, dynamics, speed, and musicality, as seen and heard in the video.

Happy to see something interesting, full of energy, dynamic, funny, smart..and MUSICAL..I didn't like that much stuff this young man was playing on the Roland contest so I decided to see what else is he doing AND I AM NOT SORRY AT ALL..;-) Probably the e drums still can't inspire players to something really interesting.. but I believe that with talents these guys have and with some more time it¨ll come.. This is what I'm talking about! This is fucking awesome! Technicality for its own sake is stupid and self-serving, but when you can use your learned technique to create a work of art such as this, then that is when you're on the right path; that is when you can be called not just a musician, but an artist. Hats off to you, JP. This is one of the best drum solos I've ever seen.
