My drum teacher was always about concepts and plans instead of isolated fills or grooves. We tried to put something together ourselves as there was such a massive hole in materials offered to actually turning these bits and pieces into useful and musical tools. It unfortunately never went beyond loose sheets of papers, but this is exactly the type of thing we thought was the way to go. Really really cool to see someone putting the work in and explaining it so clearly. Keep up the great work! It's rare to find that combination of great drummer, great teacher, and someone that takes the time to make this sort of thing. The fact that you put this amazing lesson online for free also speaks volumes. Thanks a lot!

This is brilliant man, I am mostly self taught and sometimes a bit mystified about how people develop their rudimentary vocabulary but I can actually digest this. I am going to persevere with imitating every permutation you demonstrate here.

I’ve been at that point of struggling with using rudiments on the kit instead of just a practice pad and after spending an hour on the kit with that Paradiddle part you explained I was having a much easier time exploring the kit with the Paradiddle. This is the best explanation of getting flow around the kit with simple rudiments. Excellent job man… we should honestly be paying for this master class 😅😅 you should definitely set up a course or something!

Based on just this video alone, I am going to trial the paid lessons/content on your site with the intention of purchasing longer-term. I've watched probably thousands of KZbin videos on this topic but rarely do I find anything approximating its quality. Thank you, and kudos to you.

Good stuff, i wanted to bring up something I got into in the early seventies that is semi related to this. You can do this with any tune for ideas. Take a standard like Stella by Starlight or whatever. Since the phrasing and slot is basically in triplets, play the melody as triplets (real book reading). Anything that is not the melody is the ghost notes of the triplet 1, la, le, 2, la le... or 1, ta la ta le, ta for sixteenth note triplets. etc.. So lets say you have two swung 8ths so that is just "1", "le" but you play the "la" as a ghost note. so you could do the "1" and "le" on toms and possibly the ghost "la" on your snare or your hi hat or whatever as an example. Its a great way to learn to play melodic drum solos, you end up voicing them however on the kit and you end up getting ideas (rhythmic and otherwise) for everything you do while in this style. after awhile you will be scatting all this stuff to yourself when your soloing making up your own stuff. This can be done with straight time music as well. Anyway, something fun to do that is good for your reading and your vocabulary. This concept can be used in zillions of ways making up all kinds of stuff from this concept, answer and response etc. Great way to outline a tune on our first chorus too of whatever tune your playing.

@JPBouvet 8 ай бұрын
This is just one of the keys for your keychain! This is one approach, but there are others that you'll use in different situations, and then you move between approaches. A different approach to this is the "Unfolding Melody Approach," which uses things like my Down-Up Method. I taught a short version of this in my "Flow Foundation Masterclass" on KZbin (you can search it), but it is covered in-depth in my "Rhythmic Vocabulary Course" on my website.

Very nice! Because it's kinda choppy, it remind me a bit of Chris Coleman (I hope this is the way he spells his name), but if you prelude the groupings a bit smoother and you just play the base drum naturally, instead of in a pattern way... you would sound more like Steve Smith. Can you please tell me what hi hats and snare are you playing. They sound good!

I can't say what Dana Hawkins is thinking necessarily, but I would say most drummers who can improvise freely on the kit use some version of this. I assume that this approach is actually very common, but not often deconstructed and taught.

Thx millions! I’m practicing/listening to Alan Holdsworth(RIP).The bass player has works w/Dana. I can see they divide or play what you do on the snare on ride cymbal & snare to get those extended patterns. I learned to play me feet like my hands so all the rudiments I do w/my hands can do w/feet(heel & toe) I also use 4 hi hats(2 remain closed,Gibraltar X-hats keeps clean sound while doing foot patterns) you mentioned Swiss Triplets… I do those & make them alternate by putting a single stroke either the 1st stroke or last stroke… yes w/feet. You just opened up countless possibilities! Can’t thank you enough!
