This is absolute gold. I never thought to use any type of shim for alignment and therefore have never attempted a sub rebuild. Alignment, I was always told, takes special jigs and fixtures to get it right. This has to be one of the coolest videos I've seen in a while. Thanks for making it, Subbed up, Peace!

Where do you get your speakers parts, glues and shims? I used to recone speakers years ago and we used to get everything from a company called Waldom. But they're out of the speaker business. Also, a couple of helpful tips when re-coning speakers. 1. You can use a piece of scrap shim stock and double sided tape and go around the magnet air gap to help clean it out. 2. It's easier to set the voice coil first and then lay a bead of glue on the speaker basket and then set the spider over the voice coil and run a bead of glue around the voice coil and spider. That way everything is perfectly aligned. 3. Then once the glue is dry, then run a bead around the top of the basket, set in your cone, and run a bead of glue around the cone and voice coil. Finally, glue on the gasket.. Also, instead of using a grinding wheel to clean the basket, use a scraper on the easy stuff and a wire wheel on the harder stuff so that you don't remove so much metal from the basket which prevents having to fill gaps with extra glue.

what is the best quality spl subs and amps to get ? i want four 10's at least 1000 rms , two 12's at least 2000 rms , and one 15 at least 2000 rms.. and do square subs give a different kinda bass, and should i get booth?
@MoistGrundle8 жыл бұрын
Here's what I know about square subs; you know how Olympic level gymnasts use square trampolines? it's because there's more bounce from them. Same rule applies to square subs. They'll hit harder for the same wattage as a round sub.
@Mikeywil00038 жыл бұрын
That grinder has entirely the wrong wheel on it for taking that glue and shit off. You should be using a wire wheel, or a flap disc. That is a cutting wheel that your using.
@davee.16608 жыл бұрын
Was just going to say WTF? A wire wheel would been a lot more effective and safer.
@dailyfilmfix4698 жыл бұрын
I'm the last person to criticize anyone but I was thinking the exact same thing. A grinding wheel is the last thing you want to use especially for a speaker re-coning. Someone gouged out parts of the frame too. IDK if it was accidental or not but I would just take the loss and get another sub. How does someone blow a sub that powerful in the first place? They must have been pushing 5000 watts RMS bridged into 1ohm.. LOL!!

Not to worry: the basket is made out of aluminum, which doesn't stick to magnets. That's also why he had tape over the coil gap. I agree though, a grinder would not be my first choice to remove residue from the landings. I would use a conical wire brush. A solvent might even be a better choice, to reduce abrasion on those machined surfaces. If those landings aren't EXACTLY perpendicular to the center pole of the magnet, the coil may rub at the limits of excursion. Grinding away too much metal could possibly cause a skew.

@GalacticalAmbassador9 жыл бұрын
Going from 1500 watts to 2500 watts with a recone is unreasonable because the subwoofer should originally have the optimal voice coil size to fit in the gap. And even if the recone was 2500 watts then it would create almost twice the amount of heat and only be about 2.2 decibels louder and the increased excursion might bottom out the subwoofer
