I'm glad to hear this because that was my thoughts as well I would think as long as the car is running the alternator is what is supplying the power and if you have enough to sustain the current draw you really don't need reserved power so if you can afford and can fit multiple alternators that is the way to go until you can't fit anymore LOL

My stock alternator is 130 amps. My system is just going to have about 1000-1200 max RMS power going to 2 Sundown 8's. So will my 130 amp alternator be fine? Thanks!

It should work. I run a 1500 watt amp on a 150a stock alternator and am just fine.

I had 4000 watts in a tahoe, stock electrical, stock 130 amp alternator and had severe voltage drop/light dim. I did the big three upgrade, replaced the front battery with a skbt8785 and added a skbt120 battery in the back, all wired with 2/0 welding cable still with the stock 130 amp alternator and now I have zero voltage drop or light dim at idle and I can go full tilt for a long ass time before the batteries drain. Even though I'm starting out with a decent output alt, I personally think alternator output and battery reserve are equally as important.

My 2018 Promater City van's OEM alternator is 160a has gone bad and only putting out 12.5v. There is a lot of power demand on my van. I run a giant battery 155ah AGM starter battery and 2000 watt inverter + 12v fans and LED lights and other appliances overnight. I want to put in a 320a after market high amp alternator, but worry about the computer and affecting gas mileage. Should worry the battery fuse to my alternator is only 150a. Any pully changes if manuf claims it will fit?

my amp is 800 watts...my alternator is an 80amp thats about 10 years old now...and i get headlight dimming when the bass hits etc. should i replace it or get a better battery?

A high output alternator should fix it. Do a big 3 upgrade, its the cheapest and really does help. I had a truck with a 95a alternator and ran a 1000 watt amp on it. The big 3 nearly completely eliminated it and definitely kept it from dropping too low. If you buy led headlight bulbs, they wont dim the way traditional ones will.

I added a whole complete charging system so I would not even have to worry about my car. I have 2 battery’s 1 large under the hood then a small one hidden in the quarter panel. I will be running around 6000 watts that’s 4 amps I’m thinking I need around a 370 to 400 amp alternator . I have seen figures saying 150 amps for every 2000 watts but I have a skar 2500 skv it’s fuse is 250 amp and my synergy said 200 amp fuse I got a couple more running mids and tweets there around 60 amp fuse each so my amp fuse deal is like 570 so that don’t match totally but I got to start some were !

I got the big 3 and I got a 1 stock battery under the hood and in the back I got a XS power 2400 and my system is just 1 Memphis mojo 4K the mcd type I think and 2 15s mojos Xseries and my alternator is still stalk and when I put it up everything dims I got a voltage meter and it drops super low that it put my amp into protect mode so i was trying to figure out what would be a good alternator with how many amps bc I don't want it dimming anymore and yes all my grounds and power cables are 0 gauge nothing less and thank you guys for your help it means a lot #BassHead

Don't know if you got your question answered because your question is 6 months old but the answer is YES 👍 I have an 09 Jeep Grand Cherokee that comes stock with a 160 amp alt and I run a 1200 watt rms amp and it handles it just fine...If I run it full tilt at night with the headlights on it dims ever so slightly but it keeps up quite well..Never had any excessive drain problems like car not starting or anything like that...in fact I added a Rockford Fosgate Prime 300 x4 to it as well and it still pushes it with no problems so far...Hope this helps and of course this is just my experience so no guarantees 👍

You need to make more videos like this. I've followed you for a long time and watch a lot of your videos. This is first time I actually feel like I gained something from your channel in a long time. There's only so many times I can watch you demo your system. It's banging I get it. I'm running a 1,500w amp in my car and it's right at the point of my electrical needing upgrading. I'm running 0g from the battery to amp and ground, but I haven't changed the wires off the alt. and no extra batteries. My head lights and dome lights will dim at full blast, but in competition I haven't seen any db drop that wasn't about avg to those with extra batteries. I know, any more power and I'll have to do something. This video has a lot of information in it, this is great for people getting into car audio. I know when I was looking into what I wanted to run in my car, I searched for lot of "how to" kinda videos. Trial and error is a great way to learn, but it's also great to learn from other people who have made the errors themselves. Saves time and money for everybody. Keep these videos coming. Wish I could go down to SBN

JP what’s up buddy great videos I have a question for you man I know you’re busy and all but hopefully you take time out of your day and help me out with this I’m having a little trouble with my my amplifier. I’m not running a crazy system or anything it’s pretty straightforward the problem I’m having is that when my bass hits my amplifier goes into a protection mode. Currently I have a kicker CXA 1200.1 amplifier for my 1 12 inch kicker L7 sub. I also have a crunch 1000.4 amp for my doors. I’m also using a bass processor and I have a cap as well. I am running four gauge wire. I made the mistake in using CCA wiring versus OFC wire. I’ve checked all my connections and they’re all pretty solid. I took my multimeter and probed the battery positive and battery negative of the amplifier at idle and I was reading 13-13.5 When the bass hits I noticed that it drops significantly down to around 11 to 10.5 and then that’s when it goes into protection mode. I then did the big three upgrade on my vehicle and I noticed I gained a little bit of voltage I would crank the volume up the same way I did before the upgrade and the bass would hit and it would not go into protection mode the voltage would stay steady. But then when I turn up the volume a little bit more than that goes back into a protection mode the big three give me a little bit of power but just not enough to feed the amplifier I took my vehicle to AutoZone to have the electrical system checked the battery checked out fine but the alternator came back as a failed voltage regulator. As of right now I’m actually thinking about purchasing a mechman alternator and I’m hoping this will solve my issue. If you can give me any info what you may think it could be I’d greatly appreciate it! I’m also planning on upgrading my battery once I upgrade my alternator and I’m definitely going to upgrade all my wiring possibly to 0 gauge OFC

Not sure if you still want the input but I went through the same thing with my 2000 watt amp on stock setup would dim lights and drop into protect its crucial if you have a ported/vented box to set the subsonic a little under box frequency so you don’t get super low tones that suck all the power and check resistance on ground with ohm meter my first ground had 21 ohm resistance the second one on I put on my chassis had a .1 resistance big difference

I had the same problem for my Mazda 6, most company's didn't have an alternator for my car, but after researching i found 2 company's, one is Singer Alternator and the other is Iraggi Altnator, I went with Iraggi because their price was lower for a 200amp alternator.

Sonic electronics also has a youtube on the big three. They say go with a 4/0 gauge. I've also seen a video on the big four. The fourth one is a neg. from your alt. to your neg. battery or follow the neg. ground from battery to the neg. cable end on your engine block and hook it up there. What do u think of the big four? Capacitors suck ive never had good luck with them...and as far as I know not too many people have had good luck with them...battery's all the way

I disagree with the "caps suck" capacitors are essentially quick discharging batteries... They supply amperage to you amplifier when the feeding electrical.. Batteries are your storage... They discharge power slower than capacitors and also require better knowledge of basic electrical.. Capacitors are easier to install in my opinion bcs you just power it off the same distribution block your sub is connected to.. However as you get bigger in the stereo world like JP you will need big reserve amperage (batteries) to keep voltage up. Which is why most high current systems will run batteries over capasitors.... Does that answer your question?

I have an app that works really good for power info. Since you have a 270 amp alt all i would need is the amp hour of the battery you currently have in your car and I can let you know what it can handle RMS wise :)

+Bliss You have to factor in efficiency which 70% is a good numer I use so any total wattage you think you need from you r alternator and battery multiply it by 1.3 and that is erroring on the good side.

I know this is 2 years old but if you by any chance still haven’t figured it out. Just press the gas until your voltage stops dropping. Mine stopped around 1500-2k rpm and stayed at a steady enough 14.7v
