Hi Jeff, Mike Genereux again. Love the videos they bring back old memories, not all the details come back but the memories sure are there. I used get all my CAT parts at Colorado Kenwoth, they were great with service and their prices on parts were 20% to 25% less than the CAT dealer, Wagner Caterpillar. I do not know who is Kenworth dealer in your area, Colorado Kenworth was owned by a company called Mid America Holding Company, which in turn was owned by the Murphy family, who in my dealings with one of the sons were absolutely customer oriented. I came to find out when I ordered my truck that they owned over 30 Kenworth dealerships. They were also a big help in getting Caterpillar to inflame the 3406E under warranty. The truck I purchased from them, was a w900l 3406E, 18718 .73 overdrive Eaton transmission, Eaton 40 or 42 thousand pound rear ends, I do not remember which ones, it also has dual 15 inch Vortox air cleaners. Those air cleaner filters did not have to be changed by me until 300,000 miles. Those were the longest lasting filter elements I have ever seen. Oh I forgot 390 ratio on rear ends, 6% grades just west of Denver. I am fairly certain that the turbocharger was an Airresearch. It was the first one I had seen with a waste gate. I do not recall what the boost gauge went to, but it would peg it. I also remember that the 3406E was touted at the time to be at least a 750,000 male engine due to the improved rod and main bearings. The transmission and rear ends carried a 750,000 mile warranty. The 18718 was the only transmission I could get that carried a warranty due to the torque of the engine. Well I guess I have rambled on long enough. If I can find the truck order spec sheet I will attempt to send a copy. I do not know if I have any photo's of that truck, I will look around and see if I can find any of that stuff. I also want to clarify that when I rebuilt those 1693's that it was always at my friends shop, whose was absolutely a highly knowledgeable CAT and truck mechanic. His name was Paul Strick. He passed away in 1998 unfortunately. He was a great friend and mechanic. People with CAT engines would come to him from all over the USA to have him repair their engines. One example was 3406B had a slight miss. The owner had been to several different CAT dealers trying to get the miss fixed. They all told him they could not find what was causing the miss. He brought to Paul who went to the fuel injection pump. and found number 5 barrel and plunger off by one gear tooth on the gear rack. The engine left the factory with that problem. The fella that owned it was pleased as punch that the miss was cured and Paul did not charge him anything to fix it because it was such a simple thing to fix. I was wrong about my ramblings, I am going to blame them on you. Watching your videos bring back all these good memories. Mike

Jeff, I feel your pain. The cat gasket "kits" or whatever they call them are a misnomer. I had difficulties (that's cleaning it up some) whenever I did any major work on Cat engines. Had quite a few at the fleet I worked for, for 35 years. The 3306's had a separate parts list for your particular arrangement number, but didn't always call out all the packages you might need for any given job. The newer engines were even worse. I'm pretty glad that I've retired to my home machine shop, and have outgrown work and worry. If I could have had a place like yours, it would have been really hard to leave. But, alas, being a heavy truck/equipment mechanic is not an old man's sport. Keep the videos coming, I love 'em!!

Neat to hear about the headlights. I know one of the problems with the leds is they won't melt the snow and ice off. My solution is just don't drive in either but we don't all have that option.

I sure hope that fixes your oil leak on the timing cover/acc drive. Because tearing that down to change the gasket on the backer plate is a major job!! Also the oil leak you have on the rear of the engine may be coming from under the right side on the bell housing not a fun fix either!!! Wishing you good luck and thinking good thoughts. Guess they dont build them like they use to 2 1/2 million miles and a nice set of tools very important!

Hey Jeff, I’ve gotta say, I really enjoy your videos. I’ve been around trucks my whole life, I was probably even conceived on one lol. I’ve got to say, I’m a big fan of caterpillars, that’s the only thing my father ever owned, and that’s more than likely what I’ll ever own too! I’m 17 years old from New liskeard, Ontario, canada and I’ve done a lot of work on cat engines, anything from injectors, turbos, compressors, and one rebuild, but kinda needed help with the rebuild considering it was the first cat engine I’ve ever rebuilt. I’ve gone back and forth between you, and Adept Ape, and I’ve been learning more and more about the newer electronic, and older mechanical cat engines! Keep up the good work, and just remember, chin up, foot down driver!

Hi Jeff. Just watching "How to Make a Kenworth Ride Like a Cadillac. Those Centramatic balancers sure looke like a hot tip for a better ride. Especially with solid mount walking beams. The company I hauled boats for built most of its own trailers. We built a series of 53', 3-axle outside beam yacht trailers for us and Brunswick Marine (Bayliner) Express. They were air-ride, and very low slung because our #1 issue was HEIGHT. One inch in height can add literally HUNDREDS of miles in oversize permit routes. Especially the farther east you go. Anyhow, those trailers had either 215/75 or 235/70R-17.5's on 10-lug wheels with 12.5" brakes. Bob Manning, the owner of the company, and designer of the trailers figured out that to get ANY tire life whatsoever out of those 17.5's, we needed to keep them inflated to 120 PSI at all times. We were losing tires for no good reason and getting lousy tread life. We never hauled a lot of weight and deadheaded 20% of the time. Finally, Bob bit the bullet and started by installing Meritor Central Tire Inflation System. PROBLEM SOLVED!! Our shop guys had to drill the spindles with a mag drill and get it dead center. But, after that, the installation was pretty straightforward. There was a monitor light on left side of trailer gooseneck, so you could tell when a tire, or tires, had gotten below a set point and the system was operating, bring them back up. One time, I think on my way to my usual stop at the Pelican Truck Stop in Laurel, MT, enroute to Seattle, I noticed light staying on constantly. Sure enough, I'd picked up some iron and had a real leaker. Well, being the lazy SOB I am, I just didn't shut the engine off all the way back to the yard in Arlington, WA, and saved a flat repair out on the road.

Pardon my ignorance, because I don't know the compressor setup, but 3 gaskets can produce a lot of sealing surfaces, depending. Looks like a potential source of trouble.

Jeff, New installation looks good; cannot wait to hear it run. The gauge mounting looks a little "janky". Surely that can be improved a bit. Keep the videos coming. Take care.
