I really enjoy benefiting from your knowledge on CAT products and your friends as well it great. I was a driver for some 30 plus years and have driven many different rides , but of all of them Caterpillar is by far my favorite power plant. I had mainly C12s but the power they made was awesome and never got the chance to experience a C15, but love learning about them. Anyway love the channel and I will try to keep up.

Hi Jeff...I always wanted to drive a truck and I got a job washing big rigs for free at 19 years old. .I got my CDL when I was 22 years old and I had to give it up at the age of 62 years old do to Parkinson's Disease. I had a good long run as a truck driver and I miss it. Thanks for the great videos because they sure do make my day. Thanks again from Mike down her in Temecula California.

I've done nearly all the mechanicn' since I dont trust most shops to do my work. Just wanted to say after replacing the p/s pump, the brakes (after the shop screwed em' up), the heater core etc. Infound you're a real inspiration. Great Vids. easy to understand. Reminds me of a time I was up on the mountains with a gal sightseeing, put the truck in 4 low and crossed a small creek. not more than 5 mins later and family camping in a VW microbus was flagging me down, course I stopped, that the thing to do. they needed a jump, the cold of the mountain mornings took its toll on the battery. my father the machinist made a pair of jumper cables out of an old stick welding machine, hell they were about 20 ft long. got the family back charging their battery and when on our way, the gal I was with said why did you stop for them? Wow, that hit me pretty hard. my gal is pretty dumb. this family is up in the mountains who know's how long they have been stuck there. it's the right thing to do I told her. how about if you were the one stuck, wouldn't you want someone to stop??. needless to say, it was another lonely night. my truck course it's a FORD first on race day 1988 250 4x4 "sweet silver" was her name. I took better care of my inanimate objects that my intimate ones..

MICHEAL HOFER you know what, the twins are not bad, the thing that messed the twin turbo Acert engines up was the factory programming primarily, then those stupid IVAs. Just getting a proper tune, opening up the exhaust and fixing the known little issues that cause the big problems the engines are reliable. I'd take a twin turbo Cat any day.

Leaking oil THRU the metal? That ain't alpine-green! lol. Used to stop for people all the time - nowdays everyone has cell phones and don't want/need help. I still sometimes stop, but I had a girl act like I had 3 heads when I stopped to see if she needed help one time and I didn't want to end up on a list, so I drove on. I like the foaming Gunk degreaser, it sticks better on vertical surfaces, but diesel fuel and solvent work well together too. Do you have a link for Michael McCoy? Thanks for the video!

Nice job with the turbo Jeff, looks like it belongs in there. One thing I was told once by a mechanic that may be of value to you is that Acert Cats have an operating range of 1300 to 1600 rpm, I understand you have a unique gearing setup but you could probably yield better performance by running it in the operating range. These big kitties will suffer quite a bit but high rpm does them no favors. Great video and cant wait to see the next one.

on the switch blade actuator.. can you get a nut for the threaded end of the cylinder.. if so create a half tube head shield that is clamped in position with the nut. dead air space over the insulation will really work far better.. if there is room. looked really close only issue would be the need for a drain port on the lower end of the heat shield.. in emergencies when silicone tubes blow out... cloth friction electrical tape covered by self vulcanizing silicone tape works great..

Fun story. I used to stop for everyone on the side of the road. As an ex tow truck driver, current mechanic it always feels nice to lent skills or knowledge to people when they're having a rough go. About a year ago, I was driving to work when I thought I saw someone try to wave me down. But he was on the inside of a corner my headlights barely caught him and 4am me to wasn't sure if it was something or nothing. About 2 miles down the road my conscious hit me. It was cold 12 degrees and windy. "did I see someone, or was it just something in the wind" I asked myself. "They have a cell phone" " what if yhier phone is always dead like my fiance's?" And in the end I decided to phone the state patrol and have them check it out. When noone called me back all day I assumed it was done. Until that night, when my fiance called me on my way home. The police were there and they wanted to ask me a few questions. Still not connecting this with the possible person that am, I wondered what they wanted. Apparently the man I saw was really there. And had driven a car off the road on that corner. He had just beaten his ex gf to death, shot her new boyfriend (he barely lived) then stole his car. Which he made about 20 miles till he flew off the road and presumably tried to flag down motorists. Who knows what could've happened that day. And while I still will occasionally stop during the day, or for women if the situation doesn't look fishy, I usually just call the non emergency number

Hello Jpaydirt, I have an off topic question; is anybody making new parts for the 1693? They were a bullet proof engine if you drove them correctly. The old guy I worked for as a kid wore out three trucks with the same engine. It went a little over a million miles before he rebuilt it. He did roll a set of bearings in at 500,000, other than that just changed oil and never got it hot. He put an egg under the throttle and told me if I broke it I was fired. Up until I retired I drove in socks only I could feel the feedback better. The TLC you put into your engines is impressive to say the least, Thank for sharing your knowledge Sir.

Bruce is a good guy. I got my Pump and injectors for my small cam Cummins from him and Pete way back in the 90's. It put 612 to the tires on the local Cat wheel dyno. I would say with your egt's in the 1300 range its isn't defueling very much if any. What size compressor wheel inducer is in that turbo? I build 80mm ones for the Cat guys here and they usually run in the mid 40's on boost but they are usually tuned in the 600hp range.
@Jpaydirt
@Jpaydirt 7 жыл бұрын
88mm
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 7 жыл бұрын
Unless you plan to be pushing over 1000hp an 88mm inducer(diameter of blades of wheel inlet) is way too big. Have them switch it to an 80mm. That is still kind of big but it would leave you room to grow. For your current power level a 75mm would be fine, but I like the 80's because you can run up in the 800hp range and still keep it cool. An 88 wheel wants to flow in the 120-130lb/min range of air and that is in the 1200-1400hp range. They run toasty but we push 75mm well over1200hp in racing diesel apps. You will get a better spool, lower egt's more torque and more power if you switch it to an 80 over the 88.
@dougkratz5269
@dougkratz5269 7 жыл бұрын
Switchblade turbo is all about quick spool. That's the beauty of it. You can run a much larger turbo than conventional wisdom would dictate with the switchblade.
@bcbloc02
@bcbloc02 7 жыл бұрын
The switchblade helps with spoolup but that does not negate the fact that a compressor that is sized too large is inefficient and makes more hot air than one sized properly. Bigger is not always better. I would say that the switchblade is more an improvement to the standard cat turbo method where they put a real small housing on so it spools fast and makes good torque then wastegates to keep the speed in check and to manage drive pressure. With the switchblad you get the fast spool and low end torque but don't waste the exhaust energy on the top end thus getting more boost from energy that normally would have been blown out the pipe without making a bunch of back pressure and reducing fuel economy.

bcbloc02 no,a larger compressor runs more efficiently at that power level. Read the compressor map and look at the efficiency islands. I doesn't "want to flow 120-130lbs/min", it "can" if you push it there. At his power levels,he doesn't need to push it anywhere near that flow,therefor not as much hot air. 75mm waaaay to small for a CAT. 80 is OK,but a 15.2L needs more, especially with some fuel.

Hey Jeff if that there quick steel don't work go to Harbor Freight and get those alumaweld rods and you can pretty much weld it up with MAPP gas torch and them rods kind of melt like solder. But I believe you're good to go with that there quick steel

Apparently I completely forgot to send you the stats on the truck! It’s an 89’ w900b with a 13 double OD and 3.90’s. Powered by a 400big cam just turned up a little, nothing major. 18,000 on the inframe. Thanks for featuring man, that’s awesome! Wanna trade? I’ve always been a cat guy myself! Haha

Hi Jpaydirt. Love your videos and the Cat mods to your truck. Whatever happened to the piston and rod you were gonna send to me here in Ireland....? It would look mighty fine in my tiny workshop. Enjoy your day.😁

I visualize your set up as being ...exhaust gases travel from combustion chamber to turbo then are exhausted up the stack. The other end of the turbo has a fresh air intake, which is compressed by the turbo, then sent to the intercooler, then sent to the intake manifold. For the gas temperatures you mentioned in your video, the 1300 F and the 800 F, where in the airstream or those temperatures? The 1300 F I am guessing is the exhaust gas temperature right after if leaves the combustion chamber. What about the 800 F temp? Thanks.

Maybe you said this and I missed it but did you weigh the twin setup vs the single?

I didn't weight them, but I could hardly pick up those cast iron turbos, I'll bet the whole change over weights as much as just one of those cast iron turbos

Thats what i thought because the low boost circut was lost by taking away the small turbo would tell the computer that the low circut not there for pre cumbustion ...ie computer derating no low end boost...curious to see how it all shakes out..
