You need to do a video about equipment auction sabotages ,,,I know this is a trick(this is where you're at the auction and all the equipment is idleing people are checking them ou)this trick is from an old horse trader this is for older diesel equipment ,,,auctions every diesel engine at idle between the 200 300 RPM range (harmonic resonance)) you could find a point where you're idling it for that motor just knocks like hell once a idle Pointe was found he would set that equipment at that point if he wanted to buy it,,,, and other machines if didn't want to buy it he could find an idle Point with that motor sounded like a sewing machine,,,,,,, then every time somebody played with the idle on his prospective new machine he'd run back there and set that Idol making it knocked like hell,,,,, so when you're buying a quipment at all actions there's so many different ways people sabotage equipment I machine could have been idling for hours fine ,, so when time the auctioneer comes around they can't get it started ,,,, then after it's been sold The Saboteur un sabotage & it starts it up and drives his new machine to his stable,,,,,,, do a video on all the s*** people can do at all actions and how to spot it,,,,,, I'm an old diesel dog from lay back but I enjoyed your video and learned a few things new,,,, when you quit learning in life that means your dead lol

I spent a formidable part of my life as a heavy duty mechanic. A side bar to this video is, a broken truck is not a deal breaker but a price adjuster. I prefer to buy trucks that require some sort of repairs prior to being usable. I’ve bought my truck with blown bearings in the bull gear. A relatively simple repair. But a lot of guys figure dump the truck.

I agree. I'd rather buy a truck needing an overhaul than one that was just overhauled? Do you think they did a quality job right before they sold it?

One other thing to look for is correct fastener use...are all the bolts holding down the part the same? Most engines don't hold down a part with different kinds/styles of fasteners. Its a red flag for a shoddy repair and that repair ethos probably follows through to other repairs & maintenance.

With my first truck, I bought it from my friend’s nephew. With being inexperienced I went with his word, which, worked out for me. The problems I have had with it was unforeseen, but, that c12 is a workhorse and I love CAT. Fast forward to today. Going to a dealer to look at my next truck and you have been a godsend to me. Going to do this to weed out the ones I am serious about, then, have a diesel mechanic set up to do an inspection on it. Thanks again for making this a little less stressful.

Good vid.. One thing I find is really good to listen to is the exhaust and the intake, listen for any cylinder that doesn't fire the same as the others, a rhythmic "ump" in the exhaust, or listening on the intake side maybe a rhythmic hiss of a leaking intake valve Always like watching a 'dep'dape vid

Great video as usual. A video on diesel engines for the marine industry would be good. I rebuilt my cat with borrowed manuals and i love the performance I'm getting. Balanced the crankshaft using race engine lathe and got an extra 10hp and 40nm torque. Also would be good for you to cover the various categories of use for marine appilcation. Ie heavy use vs easy use and life expectancy etc. Cheers

First thing I look for is where the air enters the cylinder at. If it enters at the top, I shy away. If it enters through a ring of ports just above bottom dead center and has to be pushed there by a roots blower, I'm in.

I bought a tractor, bloke said it didn't smoke, when i got it home i knew what i was in for as it had been sitting for 10 years in a paddock, well did it smoke? it blew more smoke than a steam train, the fix for blow by was put a piece of rag on the dipstick, the oil filter had never been changed in its life, i didn't need to change the oil as it used it like fuel, when it finally let go i found out the farmer used an angle grinder to clean up the weld on the cracked block between the cylinder bore, i had to get another block and i rebuilt the engine, also i had to take the radiator apart as it was blocked solid by dirt, now runs perfect.

The older trucks will smoke upon startup. Old 70s and 80s will smoke blue or grey for a while if cold. I own a old 400 Cummins and it will smoke for 20 to 30 minutes or until it's warm and that's just how it is. I rebuilt mine around 40,000 miles ago and it will smoke when cold until it gets to 160° still and everything is new. Nature of the beast with these old engines especially when timing has been retarded or low compression pistons are installed like mine.

There's only two reasons to get a used engine. One is to get that famous torque from 1100 to 1400 RPM that's only available on yellow engines. In which case, everything you mentioned applies. The other reason for a used engine... Revenge! A twin turbo 8v92 with straight pipes, mated to a 5 and a 4, is perfect for running passed the neighbor's house at 4 in the morning, after having been kept up all night by one of their famous Saturday night parties. In that case, who cares about how bad the engine is as long as it runs, and is extremely loud, and will rev to 2400 RPM. Just make sure to bump the governor before shifting. The neighbors have earned it.

We just ended up rebuilding 3 engines. All 3406E. They all had around about 1.5 million miles. All water issues. Either sucking it in or blowing it out. Is that about right for lifespan of a good cat motor? The one motor with big horsepower numbers( turbo, injectors and a hot cam) was blowing it out but the others it was pulling it into the oil pan.

There are a few more rules when dealing with a used DPF engine: The failed DPF will damage the rest of the engine, so if you find a problem in a DPF engine be alert. The rise in backpressure destroys the turbocharger. In other cases, the turbocharger fails and the leaking oil ruins the DPF. If the engine does not use an injector in the exhaust system, it will inject extra fuel to get the DPF into active regen mode. If that happens too often, it wears out the piston rings and bores due to excessive unburnt fuel in the cylinder. Other times, the piston rings reach the end of their life, lead to excess oil consumption, and then clog up the DPF. I don't know how to separate all the different issues to solve the problem. Maybe you need a DPF, maybe you need to rebuild the whole engine and then replace the DPF. It really sucks that doing a compression test is either impossible or extremely time consuming on most modern diesels. 7:20 Diesel engines in many cars and pickup trucks always routed the blow by into the intake manifold or turbocharger. On the old ones, you could easily see where a hose was routed to the intake, then you could remove the hose and observe. 8:15 The other flaw in coolant test strips is that they don't tell you what type of additive package the coolant uses. Many years ago, Honda dyed their coolant green, and people would use the silicate based green antifreeze that was made for American cars. The result was water pumps failing too soon. There are other problems with the wrong coolant, but the example I used happened in my family. Gasoline or diesel, you must have the correct type of coolant and if applicable, coolant additives. Do any of you guys watch the "Powerstrokehelp" channel? People who own or work on diesel engines should also watch that channel even if they don't have a Ford or Navistar. 9:20 Excessive DPF active regen leads to excess fuel in oil if the engine doesn't use a fuel injector in the exhaust system. That is one thing that should be mentioned when you mention checking for excess fuel in the oil. It is extremely important.

Diesel Power 6NZ if you don't mind eld, 1LW if you want to be eld exempt. I personally run a 1LW and love it, also have a 5EK and have no complaints.

Hell Diesel pros I own a 2006 F350 with a 6.0 powestroke I love the truck and I had no real problems other than some codes that Come on and I mostly ignore as it the past the codes won’t stop. I do need a mechanic to do real diagnostics and a real service. Any idea how to find a good Diesel mechanic in Jacksonville Florida?

Cruise control works for a minute sometimes.. then it cuts off. Sometimes it works for days on end without cutting out. Very strange. Replaced Speedo sensor on tail shaft. Still cuts out
