Awesome how something as simple as going back to that 5/8 section at the end can suddenly bring the whole solo together. Amazing.

Yeah the beginning was a bit long, but I feel like it was suppose to be that way, to kind shock you when he starts grooving. Honestly, only a matured drummer can appreciate this kind of playing

That’s what Tony would do! Some crazy long double stroke roll for two or three minutes 😂 and Dennis Chambers would place something like take 5 with double bass drum underneath for 5 minutes building up to an explosion! I’ve been checking out JD’s drum lessons for the past year and this guy is probably one of the best Drum teacher on planet earth.

I love how JP really rides on certain themes in his solos for a while. A lot of dudes will just throw quick chop after quick chop atcha, and while that's certainly impressive, I think guys like JP, Greb, Guiliana, Johnston, Halpern, etc. who really establish recurring themes and ideas in their solos are the really exciting ones to watch. Sick stuff!

This is what I'm talking about! This is fucking awesome! Technicality for its own sake is stupid and self-serving, but when you can use your learned technique to create a work of art such as this, then that is when you're on the right path; that is when you can be called not just a musician, but an artist. Hats off to you, JP. This is one of the best drum solos I've ever seen.

Seeing a lot of ignorant comments here. Which isn't to say you aren't allowed to dislike his solo, but far too many people are writing this off because of his pants, or the fact that he doesn't launch right into a Royster-esque barrage of chops from the get-go. I for one find it impressive how fully he develops the central idea: quintuplets. Count it. Until about 5 minutes in he rides on grooves that all fall into 5 note groupings. And he expresses this feel of 5 in a variety of ways. So slick.

the ability to play a variety of polyrhythms shows that he's mastered time which is one of few key components to being a considerably amazing drummer. those components being time, dynamics, speed, and musicality, as seen and heard in the video.

everyone has different opinions and we need to respect each other!!! nobody likes the same things, so that doesn't mean we should bash each other for being that way!!! as for this drummer JP, he obviously knows what he is doing, its a solo, a freestyle to demonstrate his talent... the poly-rhythmic patterns and time signature changes he is doing throughout this video are fantastic. step out side the the box and listen

That was an amazing exhibition solo. he proved the possibilities of coordination when taken to a mastery level. he didn't play a soft-spoken jazz solo (of which he is capable) but that doesn't in any way mean that his caliber of playing is suddenly lowered

This is a great solo. I can see that people (who need instant gratification) could get bored as he dwells on some beats but he's building tension, and there's a strong progression of ideas, ideas which are all great and groovy! Wake up, fools.

I love how groove heavy he is. Most drummers tend to all this flashy playing but in my opinion its just hand waving. The groove is what its all about, holding it down, this kids got the right idea.
@caydjj
@caydjj 9 жыл бұрын
I was very uninterested at first. Then the chops came in and it got far more musical, and eventually became a very technical piece that only a few drummers could actually replicate. The best part was that he stayed with the exact same base beat without really showing it, but then came back to it at the very end. Amazing!

I dare say one of my favourite drum solos ever. Certainly the best that I can remember that one might call technical rather than groove based (although plenty of that too)

i think the idea was to take an idea, and essentially orchestrate it around the kit in as many different ways as possible, while still staying somewhat true to that idea. it doesn't necessarily need to be complicated to be a good solo. i really dig this.

JPs solos tend to give me the chills. There are parts that are so monotonous that they actually give the creeps, I've used this analogy before, but kind of like the eerie music in horror movies. Also, there are moments during this solo where it looks like he was filmed with lower frames per second because he's moving so fast. I really liked this.

Mike Johnston's head at 7:30. He's feeling the fundamental structure of the beat and not every single stroke or emphases. I feel like thinking about a beat that way frees the drummer up to not only give any song a strong feeling, but to also try new things. You guy rock the world music education, Thanks!
