It stands for hit dice. Not super important if you are running 5E, but super helpful for converting monster stats to other games!

Interested to hear what the printing issue was that caused the missing letters, can you share any more details?

Yeah! For some reason the combo of my open type font, with a transparent .tif underneath, plus the way the printer saves out the PDF for printing made some of the letters disappear. Super weird and we couldn't really figure out the exact reason, but saving as a different PDF preset fixed it.
