I still have the E-M5 Mark II, and I love it! Especially with the 17mm 1.8 or 25mm 1.8, this thing is small, compact and very powerful! Also the build quality is outstanding, and the battery will never let me down in my travels.

3:29 Not only can you customize some buttons or dial positions to change to some My Set on the E-M5 mk II, but you also get 2 more buttons (B-Fn1 and B-Fn2) on the battery optional portrait grip, giving you a total of 8 buttons, one more than the E-M5 mk III. As well as, well, a 2nd battery you can swap without removing the grip. As far as I know, there's no power portrait grip for the mk III. Therefore, usability wise, the mk II trumps the mk III.

With 5mkii and 5mki for that matter, you have a choice of battery grip and two batteries for extended battery life. In that config it works well with heavy lenses. When doing street, off comes the grip and on goes the small 17f1.8. Olympus have dumbed down the 5mkiii in that regard and killed it for my needs. If they had left the grip config, I would have been tempted, but I'm also disappointed with micro USB instead of usb-c (really in 2019 nearly 20!) and for the price plastic and smaller battery are a big no no for me. The evf and rear panel should be higher resolution too. If olympus feel the need to differentiate between em1 mk2 and em5 lines, I think the dual card slots, built in grip and larger buffer depth and faster shutter for sports etc are enough. The Em1 mkiii, when it arrives, would surely trump the em1 mkii anyway, and the price difference between 5mkiii and 1mkii is so small, why does it matter to them! As is often said in the video about the 5mkii, "it isn't a worse camera because of the 5mkiii's arrival". The same could be said for the em1 mkii. I suspect, a lot of people who invested in the em5 line of cameras feel somewhat abandoned by this change of emphasis and loss of adaptability in the new version. To me, as others have said. This is an Em10 mkiv.

I bought the mark 111 when it first came on the market. I have an EM 1 mark 111 which I absolutely love. The plastic camera drove me mad, I had waited a long time for the camera to be released and was bitterly disappointed when I found out it was plastic. The catches on the metal bodies are the best with the plastic it feels soft and it seems that damage could easily occur. I sold the mark 111 and bought a mark 1 for a very low price, I have had more photographs accepted for sale using the mark 1 than any of my high end models. I think I will buy a second had mark 11 to see what happens. Thanks for you videos they are most helpful

There are other features you mentioned as well I like so I am looking forward to receiving it and getting out and photographing the heck out of everything. Till 2019 i shot with Pentax DSLR's and never used Oly. In Photoclubs I tested all kind of gear and never wanna go to Heavy FF DSLR. In summer of 2019 I have hiking trip around Alps as a photographer of team. And I was looking for something smaller, than DSLR. From "Olympus Lithuania" i got DEMO EM5mk2 with 17mm + 14-42mm Oly lenses. And... In 18 days trip I used my DSLR just once. When I come back home, and start looking for brand new Oly, EM5mk3 was released. BUT... on small sensor 16mpix has less noise on RAW files. On 11.11. sale I've got brand new EM5mk2 Silver with huge discount. With Leica 15mm f1.7, Leica 30mm f2.8Macro, Oly 45f1.8 and second battery all setup weight just 1024grams... I love this gem and many new options of Olympus. But menu is terrible... ;)

The E-M5ii can save a MySets into the unwanted Mode dial slots, iAuto, SCN, Art, or the thing that looks like paving slabs. Very useful for jobs that have complicated settings like Astrophotography. What I've never understood is the way Olympus make changing exposure mode so difficult. The E-M5ii has a headphone out on the handgrip you are holding, and if you wear glasses there is a wide eyecup for it.

Thanks for the great review. Today I had the opportunity to see and test in person the OMDEM5MIII in the PhotO Plus Expo in NYC. I liked the new features, I can’t deny that you can see the difference. I brought my OMDEM5MII and put it next to the new one. You can feel it’s a little bit lighter. They gave me an explanation of why to go that way and it is understandable due to new sensor and other new feature. The only thing I didn’t like was the battery life. Yes, I can use the USB to charge it, but it is more items to carry on my bag. I’m more simplistic and like to have just the essential. I’m going to keep my current camera and spend the money in Pro Lennses. If in the future I want to change my camera, it would be for a level up, but I love this camera.

I’ve presently got the Pen-F and EM-5 mk II. Very happy with both although the Pen is a surprisingly heavy unit by comparison so I tend to travel with the EM-5. I have the Mk III on order and am looking forward to the slightly lighter body. I shoot video with a dedicated video unit so, other than short clips, not too concerned there. One important thing to remember for those worried about the new plastic exterior is that it is still weather sealed and magnesium frame inside so there’s a weight reduction with no loss of strength or integrity. That’s what finally sold me on moving up.

Thanks Peter, a well balanced and informative video. I have not had my mkii long, so would not be upgrading. The only thing that tempts me in the mkiii is the autofocus which I suspect is a boon when capturing kids and other spontaneous situations. I get why Olympus have made the design decisions on this, to attract in new customers including vloggers. If you have never picked up the mkii or a nikon fm2n you might not have that physical and emotional response to the solidity of a metal / magnesium body. On the other hand there is probably a good reason why apple make iphones from glass and solid blocks of metals so maybe it is not just an old guy thing! I love my pro 2.8 zoom, but in honesty in use I still enjoy my plastic fantastic 45mm f1.8 and don't feel that would put me off, so who knows. Hello Peter, Thank you the comparison I just don't get the logic behind the grip. Olympus makes the camera with bad grip and in order to make it usable you need to get an additional grip which will add cost, weight and some height to the system ??? Normally we buy an additional grip for vertical functions? So where are the savings ??? They should put a good grip on it or not at all like PEN-F, but something between is just not practical.

I can see where Olympus is trying to reposition this camera. More as a thing you can keep in your bag all the time and maybe as a viable alternative to the excellent iPhone etc cameras. The em5 now has Bluetooth so I can see this can be paired with phone GPS and headphones all the time. This is a great addition and is essential if cameras are to compete with iphone. The autofocus is also a great addition. I think Olympus have understood where cameras need to go. This means acknowledging what phone cameras bring to the table and what people will expect from their devices. This means portability and connectivity. And if a plastic body means that you can take the camera out with you more then great.

As a long time micro4/3 user, I went to buy this camera, and I tried it in store, and it was very disappointing. It felt like a toy. The new body is all low quality plastic and it's very disappointing at this price point. I wanted to switch to Olympus for smaller size and I like the Zuiko glasses, but there's no excuse for such a low build quality at this price point. I would rather have a little heavier metal body than this all plastic one. Also in the same store I could get a new canon eos R with EF adapter at the same price as the EM5III+1lens. Olympus really needs to rethink it's strategy here, if the build quality is dropping compared to the last model em5II and the competition models, so should the price... Also the new IBIS in now smaller ? not sure about that, having smaller more fragile moving parts in an all plastic body isn't very reassuring. At least other manufacturers offer a metal chassis at this price point.

Does the EOS R has the same features. IBIS is very good in E-M5 MKIII. You can get 2 to 3 second shutter speeds hand held and the IBIS is relly good when shooting video. The size of IBIS is not an issue. Olympus has a very long experience with IBIS.

Is the MKIII good? Yes. Will I run out to the shop and buy it when I have the MKII? No, not for my usage. If I was to mainly take pictures of birds and fast moving objects then maybe yes. But for my usage I do not get enough value for my buck. Many others will though! The only PROS for me is the new AF and the bluetooth while the biggest CONS are the smaller battery and the lack of the headphone jack. The smaller battery I could live with IF you could use it simultaneously while usb charging. Don't know if they will update this later in a firmware update. There is one downside to that and that is that it will break the weathersealing while charging. Maybe that is the reason they choose to not allow it. CHEERS:)

Even if the power from powerbanks are not 100% proficiant in delivering what is needed, they are able to deliver a certain amount of power to counter the power drawn from the battery and thus therefor prolong the operational time.

Thank you for making the comparison video; I found it very helpful. I have a pair of 5.II bodies, and was wondering if it was worth it to upgrade one. The improved AF and 2-stop noise improvement are *very* tempting, but at the current price point, I'll wait. In addition to the body, I would need to get a few batteries and at least one external charger. Just tonight, I was looking at some slides I took at the Oshkosh fly-in in 1994, with my original-model Canon Elan (EOS 100 in Europe). That camera is stone-age simple compared to today's equipment, but it gave me some great images. So I think the 5.II will be just fine, at least for now. :-)

Olympus does have best menu system in the business, that is why it is so confusing to people because they are custom to complete mess menus in other brands without any hierarchy and logic order in them. Others just place some most needed stuff to front and the throw all rest randomly in mix. While Olympus places all most needed to their Super Control Panel and then rest settings in the menu in their belonging categories. Like focusing related settings are in AF menu, display related in Display menu etc. The Olympus although went wrong direction in E-M1 II as they went black and white with yellow highlight and removed the sub-menu (categories) names, replacing it all with A1, A2, A3 etc. And you can read the category only at top of screen once you are there. Olympus should go back to original OM-D color coded and category named menu, but soon they might just do what others does, randomly throw features in mix because so many is whining about menu as they do not understand what they really are doing but just repeat the echo chamber.

I'd like to add to Peter's reply that the E-M5 Mark III's AF, being the same as the E-M1 Mark II's, will be superior to that of the original E-M1 - though the latter can focus faster in C-AF than your E-M5 Mark II, and can handle lenses from the Four Thirds DSLRs better due to the PDAF (as can the E-M5 Mark III and E-M1 Mark II, and indeed the E-M1X). Do bear in mind that the E-M1 original is an older camera than your E-M5 Mark II, and despite getting a lot of upgrades via firmware, certain things do show its age, such as reduced functionality of the silent shutter feature, which it didn't originally possess (limited to 1/8 sec or faster, limited to ISO 3200 or slower with some major discolouration at the top of the frame at higher ISOs in artificial light, and a very slow 1/13 scan speed in silent shutter, leading to more banding and distortion - the E-M5 Mark II scans at about 1/25 and the E-M5 Mark III scans at 1/50 like the E-M1 Mark II). The original E-M1 has a Panasonic sensor (surprisingly, since they don't use PDAF for their own cameras) and I find it noisier than the Sony sensors in the other models, with a less pleasing colour balance though that's easy enough to deal with of course and is just my opinion.

I touched the limits of MkII capabilities, stabilization and lens features. After hearing that a 16Mp is enough for standard printing did the invest in a 20Mp is a plus ? do I have a better image quality ? could I perceived it ? no sure again. Maybe the age of the MkII push me to renew before obsolescence? Is anybody have same questions , What do you think ?

The OM10 was initially always silver, but was joined by the all-black OM10 Quartz which had a simple databack permanently fitted, and a very few all-black standard OM10 cameras were then made. The US also got the OM10FC (can't remember if that came in both colours!) - that one came with the manual adapter already fitted and the FC was marked on that component (I have a suspicion that it couldn't be pulled off the camera like the normal ones could, but I might be wrong as it was never sold in the UK). Weirdly, none of these double-digit OMs were hyphenated, unlike the OM-1, 2, 3 and 4 lines. Trivia: there were some US name variants for the latter ones of that line too - the US got the OM-4T which was the OM-4Ti elsewhere (though the OM-3Ti that name everywhere), and the US OM-2S Program was the OM-2 Spot/Program elsewhere. The OM-1, OM-1n, OM-2 and OM-2n all came in both chrome and all-black variants; the OM-2SP in both its names was always black; the OM-3 and OM-4 were always black; the OM-4T/Ti were initially painted champagne but later were changed to all black. I believe the OM-3Ti was always all-black, as it was introduced later than the OM-4Ti.

@@RichardsModellingAdventures Yes - according to Olympus, there are only 2000 silver E-M1 Mark II's being made as they brought it out to mark their centenary (though they don't package it differently from the standard black model). It's a nice, understated finish, a kind of bare magnesium alloy with a protective chemical coating by the look and feel of it. Quite different from the more showy and slightly divisive silver version of the original E-M1, which came out later than the original black one but wasn't limited production - though I suspect they are outnumbered by the black ones!

Great video :) I was looking for the differences as the MKII got cheaper now, but one question remains, you said the battery life is better of the MK II, how long does it last approx. and is it also possible to charge the older model via USB? Often traveling without any electricity for few days so thats an important point for me. Thanks :)
@ForsgardPeter
@ForsgardPeter 4 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, E-M1 MKII cannot be charged via USB. It is really hard to say how long the battery lasts. It depends so much on the way you photograph. For E-M1 MKII it is around 440-950 images per battery/charge and with E-M5 MKIII it is around 310. The higher value is not measured.

Peter, thanks for your effort in reviewing Olympus cameras. As you’re a photographer, could you please tell Olympus to go back to tilt screen? For Photographers is vital to take photos BEHIND the camera. I ditched Olympus for this. I just can’t stand this flip out screen.

I an also oa big fan of tilt screen in photography. The flip screen has an advantage though. It can be turned away so that the screen is not visible.

I recently bought a PEN-F and I love the ability to flip round the screen so it is protected, and then just use the EVF. I much prefer using the EVF instead of the screen. I also have Canon DSLRs which have fixed screens, and a Canon G1X Mk 2 which has a tilt screen, and I think that at least 95% of the time I prefer the screen system on the PEN-F. I bought an external EVF for the G1X Mk 2, because having used it for a few months I decided that I much prefer using a viewfinder, although the EVF makes the camera considerably larger. The only time I prefer the G1X Mk 2 screen system over the PEN-F one is when holding the camera above my head, because it’s easier to hold the camera with both hands.

great review! You can pickup a used mk2 very cheaply. makes sense to spend the extra cash on a good lens, or mic (if vlogging)/tripod or even on computer upgrades (still have to edit these images after all).

This can also be done with the E-M5 Mark III - thankfully it hasn't followed the vicious simplification applied to the E-M10 Mark III, which lost that facility amongst many others.

Enjoy playing in the leaves! They'll be gone soon enough -- wow Fall has come and is finishing up fast it seems! The photos looked similar, but the MK III seemed to have a little more "pop" in the yellow of the leaves. Certainly seems like there are a good number of improved features in the MK III -- with not a huge difference in price. I would not expect the MK II price to drop a large amount yet. Yes -- this would be considered vlogging.

@@ForsgardPeter -- from seeing your videos (and Matti's) it looks like your Fall there goes pretty quickly -- so yes, you'd have to grab the opportunities when they present themselves. Aha -- photo challenge -- get good outdoor photos of the leaves actually falling! Maybe not the "in-focus" subject of the photo, but in the foreground between the camera and the subject -- but take the shots so that it is obvious that there are leaves falling, but still capture the subject of the photo well....

I have no camera actually so i hesitate between Panasonic and Olympus. My favorite lens would be the 12-60 Leica + One prime, and rent a 50-200 leica if necessary for a particular nature travel. I don't like the 12-40 or 40-150 ranges. The E-M5 III appeals me by the contrast autofocus. But the material seems cheap for surch a price...

Peter, I have been enjoying some of your videos, but now I have a bit of a dilemma. i switched 5 years ago from Canon DSLR to Olympus 5 mki (perhaps I should have waited for the mkii). I really like the combination of portability and flexibility with the e-m5 and I am a huge convert to mirrorless. I always like to jump a generation, so now feels like the perfect time for an upgrade to mkiii skipping the mkii. I am not a really serious photographer but enjoy landscape photography during long hikes and try some action shots (not very successfully with the mki) from time to time. So here is the dilemma. The mkiii is now double the price of mkii, and the E-M1 mkii body I can get cheaper than the 5 mkiii. For less money than mkiii I can also get a mkii with a 12-40 pro lens. Then I think about my mki. With mkii or iii it is redundant. So my final option is the E-M1 with the 12-40 and retain my old E-M5 mki when I want a lighter combo. Normally I use the extra grip on the mki too as I find it greatly improves the handling for me - so in this situation I guess the E-Mi will not feel so different? Any help with my dilemma is appreciated!

You can still get great images with the original E-M1, but if you can get the E-M1 MKII with 12-40mm cheaper that E-M5 MKIII go for that combo.

On my view, choosing polycarbonate was not a smart move. It is difficult to justify losing built quality/robustness for a negligible 55g weight loss. Do you really think a polycarbonate body will last in the same way the Mark II metal body does? Especially if we are talking about portability and a fantastic travelling camera - which means occasional knocks and drops... Another point is the battery. While I was not expecting a Nokia-like battery life-time, I am sceptical that switching to a lower capacity unit (pursuing weight loss) will keep the same performance (or even improve it). All in all, was there any Mark II user complaining about the weight of that camera? I don't really think so...

If I only shot stills and used AF-S, I'd stick with my E-M5 MkII. It's great for stills. I'm not a pro, so I don't use a lot of the features. BUT... I do shoot video. While I like the video out of the MkII, the AF-C can be terribad at times. Often it's fine, but sometimes it goes off into la-la land and won't come back. That, and adding 4k are just about enough to get me to upgrade.
