In a few years, I will most likely buy a new camera and its gonna be Olympus. I like a company that has such dedication it shows they do give a damn about there old gear.

Peter, thanks for telling us in-depth so soon about the new E-M5 III. - I’m really looking forward to a battle with the E-M1 II. To be honest I don’t see the point of this new model. Okay, it has most of the features of the E-M1 but also costs almost the same. It does not have dual cards and poor battery life. While you praise that it is small and light, you use a grip to make it actually usable. Something you did not touch on in detail is the auto-focus hardware. Does it have phase- and contrast-detection like the E-M1? Otherwise it is just not going to be good/fast enough for wildlife and low light. - I really struggle to see why I should get that camera over an E-M1 II.
@hnahler5 жыл бұрын
After watching Robin Wong’s video I can answer my own question. Wow, the auto focus is really the same now with phase detection. I don’t mind the size of my E-M1 Mark I But will need to compare it to the new E-M5 III once it makes it to the shops.

I've been thinking about upgrading from an E-M10 MKII for a while now. I think for E-M10 owners the jump up to an E-M5 is going to be an easier sell with shared batteries, and it's lighter (which is a major deal to me). It is definitely a tougher sell to owners of other bodies and for wildlife shooters with longer lenses definitely the ergonomics of the E-M1 MKII win out.

I hope they've cured the EVF "green spot" problem that really messes up the Mk.II, if you happen to need a high dioptre setting, see some sunlight and have bad luck.
@aitchessanon43125 жыл бұрын
Since the Mark III has an OLED EVF, it will absolutely not suffer from this (it was a vulnerability specific to the Epson Super Ultimicron LCD EVF panel in the Mark II). That Epson EVF panel was used also in the E-M1 original (same potential issue) and the E-M1 Mark II, but I have never come across a report of the problem in the latter model, so I think they must have added a "hot filter" to the EVF to prevent it from happening.

@Mir11895 жыл бұрын
Hello. Now i have my E-M5 Mark III more than a month. In general its a great camera, but it seems i might have found one small issue. I have been using it with Olympus flash FL-600R. Previously with my M10, photos had really nice balance in flash photography, M5 Mark III had slightly overexposed shots. Also people started to complain that the flash is too strong, and it hurts their eyes. I looked into EXIF data of older and newer photos and found out that M10 recorded "flash fired, auto", while M5 Mark III always recorded "flash fired, compulsory flash mode". This does not make sense. On FL-600R i use either "Auto" or "TTL Auto" mode, while camera and the flash should be communicating. That is partially true, because camera and flash definitely exchange information about current focal lenght of 12-40mm PRO lens, but apparently flash goes off on full GN.
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
I need to look into this. Maybe I will make a video about flash photography.
@Mir11895 жыл бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter I got my flash basics years ago, but i started to use FL-600R regularly only about 3 months ago. I expected that the flash will behave exactly same om M5 Mark III as it did on M10. Even when all the settings were same for two photo sessions, in one case i had perfect exposure, in other slight overexposure which needed post processing. At this point i dont know if its a technical issue in M5 Mark III firmware, simply differences between M10 and M5 Mark III or I set something wrong.
@Mir11895 жыл бұрын
@@ForsgardPeter Ok I guess I solved the issue i thought was overexposition with flash. I did small photosession yesterday and took few photos with my old M10 body and new M5 Mark III. In both cases, settings for cameras and the flash were identical, same zoom, same distance from the object. Old M10 has older 16MPix sensor, which has native ISO range 200-1600. M5 mark III has 20MPix sensor which has native range 200-6400. The difference in ISO proven to be the key to the saturation difference. According to EXIF M10 had to use "Gain Control: Low gain up", which is a method of increasing ISO or sensitivity. The side effect is, that image is looking bit more yellow, amber and then orange-red if the scene is really dark. M5 Mark III did not needed any "Gain control". So what looks better for M10 photos, is actually a side effect of sensor compensating low light situation, while M5 Mark III is perfectly fine with the light, but not just that - apparently i have to close Aperture/speed up shutter by 2-4 stops for the same scenario, depending how much was older 16mpix sensor compensating the underexposure. This demonstrates one thing - Megapixels are not everything. Improved ISO range of the newer sensor is indeed an important feature.

I've been looking at a Fujifilm X100V. Trying to get one in UK is impossible just now. The X100V has a big following and seems to be very popular for travel and many have commented on its size and weight. I compared the X100V with my Olympus M1 Mk III and then thought how the M5 Mk III would compare. It is actually smaller and lighter than the X100V, is weather sealed and can take other lenses AND has IBIS. Given that I already have several MZuiko lenses, it would seem sensible to go for the M5. It seems the major problem with the M5 is battery life but otherwise I'm thinking that the M5 makes better sense for me. Any thoughts?
@ForsgardPeter2 жыл бұрын
I tested the Fuji X100V and I liked it. The biggest downside was the weather sealing out of the box. The body is weather-sealed, but the built-in lens is not. You need to buy an extra kit for sealing that lens too. The lack of IBIS in Fuji X100V would be a deal-breaker for me.

Great video Peter, thank you very much! As Joe Ellis put it in his video, this new E-M 5 MKIII is a baby E-M 1 MKII. You seem to agree. The selling arguments of the two will be basically size and weight for the 5MKIII and dual battery and battery life for the 1MKII, given that sensor, AF and face detection capacity, and wheather sealing are present in both. Thus, if you want to upgrade from a EM5 MK II, choosing between EM5 MKIII and EM1 MKII will be basically a question of ergonomic .

Great review! Interesting to know about the extended eyepoint - I wish manufacturers would include that parameter in their specifications! Have you (or Robin) any old 4/3rds lenses you can test with this body? I have the original E-M1 which I keep specifically for using with the older glass and my thought is that the provision of PDAF on the E-M5 MkIII will also drive the older lenses...

I did not try older lenses on this one, but no reason why those would not work on this one too.

15:00 This new update essentially brings the EM5 up to par with the current offerings by Olympus. If any new sensor/processing technology is introduced, it makes sense that its debut would be reserved for the flagship EM1 (Mark 3?). :) As it stands, come November...EM10, EM1 and now EM5 lines can be considered as fully mature, until the next generation of Olympus sensor/processor technology is released. IMHO

Thank you so much for this this looooong awaited video Peter:) I agree with almost everything you said. However, I really have my questions at the plastic body. Really love the metal body of the MKII. It makes it feel so PRO and heavy duty, but maybe that is just a compromise we have to learn to live with. Further I also cannot understand the decisions made in regards to batterylife, This really could be better. I mean, it's even less than MKII.... And still no headphonejack?? But I wonder, does the extra grip have it though like on the MKII so it's possible to add this feature yourself if you get the grip? No handheld HIGH RES is a real bummer for me. I'm not sure it's worth it to make the upgrade from the MKII for me. My quick conclusion is this: MKIII vs MKII: CONS 1. Plastic body 2. Less batterylife 3. Different battery type (really bad if upgrading from MKII) 4. Possibly the placement of some dials, but this must be experienced personally PROS 1. Better processor and AF 2. Slightly more Megapixels 3. USB charge (powerbank) 4. Bluetooth Basically you just change the metal body and some batterylife in for a couple of Megapixels, better processor and AF. I'm not convinced to spend that money for the upgrade. In addition I would have to buy alle new batteries. Have 5 of them now. If I didn't have the MKII I would probably buy the MKIII but when one already has the MKII....hmmmmmmm They obviously did not have MKII owners in their marketplan on this one.
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
The grip does not have the headphone jack. According to Olympus it is not likely that there will be one, but we will see. I agree on the battery life, but the USB charging helps a lot. Remember that the body has the same weather sealing as the E-M1 MKII, so the body is veery well made.

Hi Peter! First of all, thanks for your videos and review. Really useful!!! I would like to make you a couple of questions: - Have you tried the 12-100 mm f 4.0 on the E-M5 MKIII? Does it fit OK (without the grip) or is it too "big" for the camera? - Second question with reference to the Silver Camera you have tried. I know some days is not enough to find out the durability, but my experience with some silver lens (like 45 mm 1.8) is that it is ver easy-scratching. Do you think it is going to happen the same to the camera? Thanks in advance for your answer!! Kind regards from Spain!! Luis
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
The 12-100mm is a bit big, but when holding it properly it is ok, when making photos. I have not tested how easily it will get scratches, but the body is well made.

Interesting camera. I found the predecessor not bad, but then I had decided for the E-M1 (1), which I still own. But why is the new E-M5 MKIII only using the small BLS-50 batteries? For me the biggest shortcoming of my E-M1 was and is, for example, in my view, the relatively modest battery capacity of the BLN-1. I do not like having to change batteries when going for a walk. Mostly the battery gets to its knees just when a nice motive calls. The reason for small batteries, of course, is based in the desire for the lowest possible weight and a handy camera to construct the housing as small as possible. And a small case means just a small battery. The fact that the weight of the new M5-III is so low, on the one hand, of course, pleasing. But a few grams more would have hurt no one, if for a more powerful battery would be used. The BLN-1 is already tight. The BLS-50 is even smaller. Sure, the battery can be changed quickly. But you have to buy a whole handful of batteries, and of course carry them along. By changing I have on the one hand a certain loss of comfort, and in addition the weight saved at the camera in the form of additional batteries in the bag. At analog times you had no power problem, but had to insert a new film in a 36er movie all fart long. Today you have space for thousands of photos, but all fart long battery change. And if you own the E-M1 and the E-M5 III, you have 2 battery systems in the house. So this strategy does not shine on me completely.
@freequest5 жыл бұрын
From what I can gather the reason for the smaller battery is that they have made the camera more power-efficient. The Steve Huff hands-on review I believe he said he used it all day without having to change the battery but he also explains how he was using it here is the link in case you want to watch it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/rJqUk4yaepKjrJY

I own E-M5 MKII. I really like that camera because of photography part. But I am more video guy, I don't make vlogs, only travel videos and some other video stuff. What I really missed in mark 2 is 4k option. Now it can be found in mark3. But what about fps in 4k? 24/30/60? Still in doubt - which is better for videos - mark3, Panasonic GH5 or BMPC4k? What are your thoughts Peter?
@ForsgardPeter5 жыл бұрын
It all depends what you are making videos of? GH5 have better video features, but are those features something that you really need? E-M5 MKIII has UHD with 24p, 25p and 30p. 102Mbps.

If you focus on video side with 4/3 camera then panasonic is much better because the bitrate in olympus camera is variable bitrate, in reality it is much lower, about 1/3, of the stated specification they give you. With such low bitrate the video in olympus is so much worse than panasonic, sony, fuji and marginally better than canon. This reason alone prevent me buying any olympus camera nowaday.

@@ForsgardPeter : Now that's a real bummer. The e-m10 battery is tiny, and if you can't have two on the camera, the autonomy will be dreadful. Stupid move from Olympus here. Hello Peter, I rather take the Magnesium body over 55g savings in the plastic. Too bad you did not put out any images showing dynamic range ??? I agree with you on the USB-C port and the small battery. It make no sense if we have to drag another battery(s) , ... here goes the 55g weight benefit ??? I little disappointment on my side, Olympus again recycle the old sensor , I was expecting more like 30 Mpx ??? It will be hard to go against the Sony a6500 with IBIS and I think also lighter and cheaper body too here in USA ????
