I'm in the same boat, I never travel outside of the London bubble or the surrounding areas outside of London. I have travelled to Cornwall, Wales and Ireland but nothing above Manchester, although technically travelling to these areas I visited the most popular places and actually know very little about how ordinary folk live in those areas. I know more about continental Europe! Than I would my own country, I've always seen the UK as being bland since I live here but we have places like the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the Eden project, Cornwall is a hidden gem and I'd like to see more of it than anywhere else in the UK.

You definitely need warm clothes, a woolly hat and waterproofs 'just in case' in Northern England and Scotland, visiting at any time of the year really. In Summer it can be very warm, dry and sunny, but it can also be wet, cool and windy up here - all of the above in the same day, sometimes.

Round my neck of the woods (Sheffield) mushy peas isn't just an accompaniment to fish and chips, it also goes with meat and potato pie - and Henderson's Relish of course. It also often appears as one of the veg choices with a Sunday roast. Corned Beef in the UK isn't the same as Corned Beef in the US, in a sandwich it's probably better with some tomato on it or a smearing of brown sauce.

There's only one Lake in the Lake District. The rest are Meres, Waters and Tarns. The only 'Lake' is Bassenthwaite (pronounced bass-enth-wait) Lake. Mere (shallow in comparison to size) and Tarn (pond) are Norse words.

Geeez you are packing so much into a short time. I'm only ten years older but now I would need at least three days at every location to catch up on sleep and to not feel rushed. I used to tear through Amsterdam and Berlin onward to Prague, partying all the way. Now I'd like to do that partying but with a 2 day buffer zone to sit and read a book and eat.

Oh man, there is a pub in Brotherswater, The Brotherswater Inn I believe, with a view on a day like today out of it's huge side window, that is just bliss as the light is fading, clouds rolling over the near vertical mountain face, a meal on the table and a pint of Stella on the side, real cosy...

Whenever I have had the chance to visit the English Lakes it has days which seem to cover all four seasons' weather inside 24 hours. Wordsworth and the other Lakeland poets garnered so much inspiration from the mists, the grey hills, and the juxtaposition of water, mountains, and ancient history. I think you might enjoy the movie Miss Potter, which includes a lot of great footage of the area whilst covering the affinity between the authoress of so many children's books and her love of the district. My youngest son has often said that the friendliness of the people of the area when his band played at the Keswick Music Festival one year was so overwhelming and honest that he and his 12-year old band mates stayed on for a whole week at local people's homes. It's great seeing it vicariously now through you two great youth ambassadors for your country.

European etiquette is the result of the major Royal families competing with each other to appear 'more refined'. The Russian Tsars (RIP) won and set the ultimate standard. A good proportion of the working class (including my grandmother) were 'in service' to their Lords and Masters and aped their manners in the hope that their offspring would 'obtain a better position in society'. Debretts is the international guide to etiquette and 'table manners' are available online. The American way of using their knife and fork is inefficient and weird considering their idea of a meal is to shovel it down as fast as possible rather than enjoy a relaxed feast with conversation. However, a 'refined' European will never object nor complain about the eating habits of foreign visitors; rather, they will observe the manners of their visitor and attempt to copy them to make them feel comfortable. There is a well known story of Margaret Tebbit, paralysed by a bomb attack, attending a State Banquet. Prince Philip, famous for his faux pas, discarded his cutlery and ordered the following courses to be made into 'finger food'; that is how you treat a guest! I still recall the first time as a teenager I was invited to an evening meal at my 'middle class' friend's home. His mother asked if 'Fish and Chips was OK'; expecting greasy stodge from the local chippy I was pleasantly surprised by nicely cooked breaded plaice and perfect potato chips. There followed a standoff; he was aware that I came from a 'working class' environment and waited for me to start eating whilst I, being taught exquisite manners by my aforementioned grandmother, waited for him to start.

Hi Joel, I can really see a family resemblance with you and your cousin! She and her husband seem really nice. I’m surprised that you didn’t get black pudding with the breakfast in your hotel. It’s a pity that the weather wasn’t nicer, when it’s a clear day you see the real beauty of the Lake District! But then again, I think it’s beautiful no matter what the weather! You’ve got to have mushy peas with Fish and Chips, it’s a British classic, you season them with the salt and vinegar that they provide in the shop! I love watching these snippets of your visit, I’m thinking of joining your Patreon to view the full versions, but I don’t know if I can afford the subscription due to having limited monthly pension income! Sorry I’m sounding like I’m looking for sympathy! Lol

You can pay for Patreon (a couple of quid) and that gets you a full month so you can join up, binge all of his videos and then cancel anytime. But be sure to sign up at the start of the month so you only get charged once. They take payment when you join and then at the start of the following month. So if you wait until the 2nd of August to join, you'll only pay once and get a whole month. If you can't afford to pay after that, cancel on the last day of the August and you won't be charged again. One payment of £2.50 for a month's access is well worth it, he has tons of full comedy and film reactions and all of his extended videos about this trip :)

Wendy and her husband / boyfriend are lovely. It’s so nice that you met your cousin here and they showed you guys the sights. I grant you, pea soup doesn’t sound very nice but I hope you’ll agree that once you’ve tried it, it’s actually delicious. Did it have some ham it in too? And as for mushy peas, it’s very popular over here. Lake District looked gorgeous. The ethereal mist on the lake just added to its beauty. Adding this to my list of places to go.

Mushy peas are made from dried marrowfat peas and are faded green in colour. Pea soup can be made from various dried peas varying in colour from greyish-green to yellow. Yes, it goes well with ham and even Frankfurter sausages, as does Pease Pudding (porridge?) made from split yellow peas.

I laughed at your reaction to seeing pea soup on the menu, as if it was the most bizarre and preposterous thing imaginable. On the contrary, it is one of the oldest, most nourishing ( not to mention cheapest) soups in existence- whether green or yellow split pea. And, as you show us with you your thumbs up sign, it also tastes delicious!
