@@NYCOPERAFAN - Especially when you consider that the majority didn't vote for Trump or Johnson. Trump lost the popular vote and Johnson's Tories only got 43% of the vote, with most people voting for left of centre parties. If the Brexit referendum had been held at any other point in time, before or since, we'd still be in the EU. It was the perfect storm unfortunately. Some people even had legitimate reasons for questioning EU membership, lack of democratic accountability, lack of transparency,a bureaucratic log jam paralysing decision making, being locked into a neo-liberal economic system for perpetuity, etc etc... I was on the fence but leaning towards Remain. After thorough research, I came to the conclusion that the pros of EU membership far outweighed the cons but I can understand why some people voted Leave. Of course, after decades of lies from the Tory media, a lot of people made more ill-informed decisions, based on those lies and for some, decisions were made for unsavoury reasons, some idiots even used it as a protest vote and some people, especially the young, didn't vote because they thought Remain would win easily but most people who voted for Brexit did so because they were badly informed, not because they're bad people. If young people had bothered to vote, Remain would have won easily. Analysis of the voting showed that the older and less educated someone was, the more likely they were to vote Leave. In fact, only the 2 oldest age demographics were pro Brexit. Unfortunately older people voted in force whilst 50% of the youngest demographic stayed at home...
@hceggeberth2 жыл бұрын
@@Codex7777 And some of us voted Leave because we were well-educated, well-informed, well-intentioned people who arrived at a different conclusion about the consequences of EU membership than those who voted Remain - as you briefly acknowledged, sandwiched between the 'But Remain was the RIGHT decision' rhetoric- and we don't regret our decision. It is very common for people in other countries to dislike Americans. As a Canadian, I have traveled extensively throughout the UK and Europe. I have often been asked if I am American. Once I tell them I'm Canadian, they're happy to hear that and tell me that they don't like Americans. This has been the case for the past 20 years. Scots have always been very friendly towards me, once they learn that I'm Canadian.

Joel, with all due respect, I'm not at all surprised you had such a negative reaction. British people are very reserved, we don't , don't ever talk to strangers on the street without good reason to do so (perhaps to ask for directions) and so to be approached by a random American (perhaps with a camera and a microphone) and to be asked if we are Scottish would be seen as really odd and an unnecessary intrusion of privacy... If it was me, I may not have been abusive but, gosh, I too would have wanted to avoid you, it would have really freaked me out. You are a really nice, genuine guy, but British folk are reserved, not attention seekers. This is the absolute opposite of the video you posted called "America!!", about the carnival funfair reaction where everyone was super keen to be on camera. In Britain we don't, we will talk with you in depth in a social setting but few British folk will have any wish to be a celebrity on cam and broadcast on KZbin Yes, it's wrong to portray everyone from a nation as the same, but if you don't explain your own personal views when asked then people will only assume you are of the majority view

Whilst a lot of people say Scots have a problem with the English I've grown up here since I was 7 and have a mostly English accent and not had problems. Boyfriend is English and not had problems. Mostly in Edinburgh people are quite used to foreign visitors too, it's a very touristy city, so I'm kind of surprised at the reaction you've had. The girls may have just not been very nice people, or they might get too many guys trying to talk to them and get fed up with it. Honestly swearing is quite common here (in some places just about every second word is a swear word). Mostly the views I've seen of Americans isn't so much hate as seeing them as stupid (though I am a an older generation than you). With what people see in comments on the internet which often show narrow minded Americans who don't seem to realise that America is not the only place in the world, and Americans who try to claim a Scottish heritage without actually knowing anything about Scotland, and the things people see in the news about America it doesn't exactly give a positive image, though I would have hoped most people were able to understand not everyone in a country is the same.

some do, thats life. I had it in Sterling, also later that night at the hogmanay, with Lulu about to go on they had to make announcements to stop the anti English singing. Then on holiday when I was younger, although we had some attitude from a couple, we took two scots in to our group and by the end they were telling us that we were actually alright and not what they thought. I suppose it's the same as everything, depends who you are around everyday and the influences they get. On another note 2 of us walked in to a Scottish club in Tenerife, ordered drinks, then realised they were all singing anti-English songs, a Scot heard me order, leant over, said, "your English", I was like, Im screwed, "yes", "don't worry about us were only have a laugh", had a good night after that. Idiots and good people everywhere.

Hi there, I am originally Irish but have lived in Scotland for 20 odd years and would not move back. First off I am sad that your first interactions with the Scots were not favourable, but please believe me when I say that there are twats everywhere but everywhere in the world most people are OK. I have visited the US many times, mostly New England and Louisiana and have found most Americans to be friendly and great people, but sadly you do have a few twats of your own. I suppose all countries are the same. I have learned that it can be best, if a bit difficult at times, to steer clear of the tourist traps as they are not representative of the country. I am glad you enjoyed haggis and black pudding although black pudding comes in two varieties, not so good and excellent. Try Stornoway black pudding. Some folks over here have formed an opinion of Americans based mainly on all the bad news that has come out of the country recently but bear in mind that bad news makes the headlines whereas good news often does not. We have politics over here and we have the extremists on both sides (just as you do) my advice if people bring political subjects up is to listen politely, but do not offer an opinion or get involved. Anyway, enjoy the rest of your stay and good luck.
