I encountered that in Edinburgh but in a milder form, the worst time was when I tried to pay for my drink with an English bank note. 😂 Once they got to know me we had a good time. A far worse time was a visit to Lands End in Cornwall. Everyone was a snob, had their heads so far stuck up their backsides you had a job to see their shoulders. 😂 So rude and my mate who set up a tent to stay there a week was bullied and jostled the first night and got the train back ASAP. I guess all Cornish men are not like that but the few give everyone a bad name.😮‍💨

I've encountered similar hostility from a young Scottish woman who seemed to hate me for being English. I explained to her that I was neither proud of it nor ashamed of it, that I had no say in where my parents happened to procreate, and that I was not personally responsible for the Battle of Culloden. I had met the young lady though two of my best friends at that time, who also happened to be young Scottish women. So, Joel's right, you can't judge an entire population by the behaviour of a few.

I feel your pain bro. One of the biggest issues is that outside (and arguably sometimes inside) the US has horrible international PR. Then you add everyone believing what's said on social media and you're looking at young people today. I'm a 36 year old Brit and I've noticed the same thing when travelling in some places in Europe. People think "Brit = drunken racist lout who eats shit food". The UK also has horrible international PR

@@NYCOPERAFAN - Especially when you consider that the majority didn't vote for Trump or Johnson. Trump lost the popular vote and Johnson's Tories only got 43% of the vote, with most people voting for left of centre parties. If the Brexit referendum had been held at any other point in time, before or since, we'd still be in the EU. It was the perfect storm unfortunately. Some people even had legitimate reasons for questioning EU membership, lack of democratic accountability, lack of transparency,a bureaucratic log jam paralysing decision making, being locked into a neo-liberal economic system for perpetuity, etc etc... I was on the fence but leaning towards Remain. After thorough research, I came to the conclusion that the pros of EU membership far outweighed the cons but I can understand why some people voted Leave. Of course, after decades of lies from the Tory media, a lot of people made more ill-informed decisions, based on those lies and for some, decisions were made for unsavoury reasons, some idiots even used it as a protest vote and some people, especially the young, didn't vote because they thought Remain would win easily but most people who voted for Brexit did so because they were badly informed, not because they're bad people. If young people had bothered to vote, Remain would have won easily. Analysis of the voting showed that the older and less educated someone was, the more likely they were to vote Leave. In fact, only the 2 oldest age demographics were pro Brexit. Unfortunately older people voted in force whilst 50% of the youngest demographic stayed at home...

Joel, with all due respect, I'm not at all surprised you had such a negative reaction. British people are very reserved, we don't , don't ever talk to strangers on the street without good reason to do so (perhaps to ask for directions) and so to be approached by a random American (perhaps with a camera and a microphone) and to be asked if we are Scottish would be seen as really odd and an unnecessary intrusion of privacy... If it was me, I may not have been abusive but, gosh, I too would have wanted to avoid you, it would have really freaked me out. You are a really nice, genuine guy, but British folk are reserved, not attention seekers. This is the absolute opposite of the video you posted called "America!!", about the carnival funfair reaction where everyone was super keen to be on camera. In Britain we don't, we will talk with you in depth in a social setting but few British folk will have any wish to be a celebrity on cam and broadcast on KZbin Yes, it's wrong to portray everyone from a nation as the same, but if you don't explain your own personal views when asked then people will only assume you are of the majority view

Though my English Granny got a little of it when she first moved to Scotland in the 40’s but I think that was mainly due to a clash of personalities with some of my Granda’s sisters, who just used the fact that she was older and English as a way to give her a dig. There is also a huge difference though between the people of 1940’s Scotland and those from 2020’s Scotland.

As a 21 year old Scottish person now living in London… we definitely perceive Americans as problematic which is just something most people have made the judgement of due to politics etc but that opinion came mostly from what we see on the media as many young Scot’s haven’t even been to the U.S so I’d like to apologise for the impression these rude people left on you, please know not all of us are like this and as much as I do understand the opinion that Americans can be problematic and annoying - not that I agree but again, I know this is what a lot of people in the UK think… there was no need for you to be spoken to like this. I'm really sorry and really shocked that you had bad experiences in Edinburgh. I would say that Edinburgh is generally a little less friendly than other places in Scotland, but that is absolutely no excuse for any rudeness. I would also say that our younger people are sadly getting less and less friendly. I don't interact with many young people here as they tend to be hostile and argumentative (this is fairly new, I wouldn't have written this even 3 or 4 years ago). My age group aren't perfect, but I'm very glad I'm not school or college-age here right now! The whole 'not liking' Americans thing is new to me. Most of us can separate Americans from politics.

I came to live in South Africa a long time ago and I find I am still bound to "home" ; my native Yorkshire... In the early days when I went back to visit I was lampooned by individuals in the UK about 'apartheid' in this country at that time. And it got to a point where I was tired of defending my choice of living here. I came to the conclusion that you cannot be liked by everyone, stick with those who you have a connection with and who you feel comfortable with, don't go through your life apologizing for who you are. I have been fortunate to travel to a few countries in my life time.....I emigrated to Canada and lived there for three years and found a similar response from the locals when they found out where I had come from. I was older and wiser and knew how to handle their parochial outlook by then. Travelling does broaden the mind and those who critisize without knowing about the individual have probably not gotten any further than their garden gate in their lifetimes. People/things are transient...in your life one minute, out the next. Don't take it to heart. Loving your recorded experiences. Brian

Did you ask anyone in London if they were English? It's a weird question... Maybe better to ask if people know the area if you want local knowledge. There is no predictable response to accosting young 'ladies' on the street in a drinking/going out area... you take your chances! I live in England - I feel we react positively to the average American, and feel sorry for the what they've been through lately. 🤔 I'm enjoying your vlogs!!

Another enjoyable video guys 😀 Disappointed to hear the Girls had bad manners and were rude 😡 No need for that.

Omg can't believe that street cone is still on the statue. I was in Edinburgh in May and it was on it then. I guess the council are not bothered about the disrepect shown about historical monuments . I do have to say the resent shown towards you is abit of a shock. The Scots are pretty hard down to earth good people.

Well done both on trying the black pudding and Haggis. It’s best not to think about how it’s made when you’re eating it, much like other animal derived food ! Sorry for your bad experience with some Scots..not all Scots are pigs though, as you must know, there are good and bad in every race xx

This is true. British Sausage is no better, but it has a porkier flavour.

@@andyonions7864 when you say "British sausage" what part of Britain are you talking about? And there are farms all over counties let alone countries, that make sausages with herbs, and flavours are differing according to the region's pigs and rearing.

I’m so sorry you experienced that kind of negativity 😕 - it’s definitely not the view of my fellow Scots, but maybe it is a younger Scottish person view - but if so that saddens me, as i’d hoped they were more open minded. I hope you get a warmer welcome & hospitality while you’re there - Edinburgh is my favourite UK city & i lived there for many years. A shame you didn’t get to see the castle but there’s so much to see & do (& great bars & nightclubs 😉). All the best & haste ye back 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

And well done both for trying the Haggis and black pudding! Will look forward to seeing how you enjoyed the fish and chips... although fish and chips is even better eaten out of paper sat near a beach overlooking the sea ! 😊. I bet you were absolutely knackered by the time you got home after packing so much in to your week here! Hope its given you both the travel bug and you get to see lots more of the world !
