The canals in the UK are run and maintained by the Canals & River Trust, not the local council. Cleaning them is mainly done by volunteers. Don't insult them for all the work and time they put in across the country.

So after his experience in Edinburgh I got sick of the continual eye rolling every time Scotland was mentioned, plus his content was getting worse so I unsubscribed. As far as I’m concerned the amount he gets through his PO Box is partly what keeps him making British content, people sending him money etc , I mean really? His British content makes him money that’s it and I certainly wouldn’t be paying for patreon
@susanashcroft2674
@susanashcroft2674 Жыл бұрын
I was the same at that point last year with the eye rolling every time Scotland was mentioned and also a live which he did (that too seem to be no longer available) whereby he was drinking and there were some comments egging him on, others telling to slow down etc. I saw he was visiting again in my feed so thought I would see through fresh eyes if things were better this time round. To be honest with all the good will of people, the kind and lovely things people have sent him, good advice, tips and willingness to show him round places, meet up etc there is that old saying 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink' Although I do feel in the literal sense that's was no doubt the key reason for him to visit, is the drinking and nightlife. IMO I think he needs to really think about what he wants from travelling in the future and think very carefully about what direction he is taking his channel in.
@rain_down_
@rain_down_ Жыл бұрын
@@susanashcroft2674 I think that's become a big problem, yes. On one hand his channel is about learning as much as possible about the UK and people therefore send him useful things and provide good advice then when he gets here for a trip, none of that research or advice seems to have counted for anything. I was impressed at his choice of places - it's a good spread of the UK to visit - but he's made bad choices when he's got to each place. When you compare his vlogs to people who do it very well, there's a gulf as big as the Atlantic between the quality - not just the execution but the preparation and research and the information provided. I mean, going to Oxford of all places and thinking that reviewing a fast food place is the content people want to see?! Lot's to learn for him, and very possible he's had a lot of bad advice too which he should ignore in future.

So the moral of the story Joel is we all make mistakes. However it's the learning and willingness to learn from mistakes that is key to our life experiences. IMO it feels like you didn't learn from last year regarding your brief visit to Edinburgh and your judgement of Scotland/Scottish people back then, as this time round it appears to be Birmingham. What I would say to you if you do decide to visit the UK again or any other country for that matter first and foremost what is my reason for visiting. If it is for a 'booze cruise' for the drinking and nightlife then that is your choice. Yes you are an underage drinker in the US but when over here it appears the 'novelty drinking day and night' seems to be a big part of your visit and this will impact upon your ability to incorporate sight seeing and properly immersing yourself into a culture and planning where you go etc.Visiting somewhere solo and I say this as a seasoned solo traveller, you have to have some level of preparations in hand and also consider your safety at all times in ANY country including your own. I still don't get why you were walking round an industrial estate and as you admitted people had advised you not to go but you did nevertheless and at times appeared to be laughing, before you suddenly decided to bolt for the next train leaving. If you want to immerse yourself in a countries culture, it's history and lifestyle (and climate!) it takes a level of research and perhaps a slower pace and may be a few visits rather than rushing round and seeing little to nothing. Again as a visitor to a country while we may not like certain things or feel your own country is better, while it is ok to be honest there are ways of conveying this (tact and diplomacy for starters) but also to have an understanding and educate yourself that may be your own country may have similar or worse things going on. Get to know locals, show interest and ask questions, rather than thinking you know best or just talking to other tourists and people in nightclubs with the greatest respect who are there to have a 'good night out.' There is a big world out there waiting for you to explore Joel, but don't spoil it by being judgemental, critical, perhaps 'over familiar' with what you think you know (especially regarding the UK as this is your 2nd visit) and coming out with some really unacceptable comments about dead bodies in canals and it would 'kill' you staying a moment longer in Brum. Take your time, some preparation/ research, perhaps cut down on the booze and listen to good and reliable advice to maximise your visit and travelling experiences. It sounds like you had a fun time in York who appear to welcome you, but getting yourself in the news and on national TV for the wrong reasons is not a good look. Still if you are willing to learn from this then I wish you well. I guess time will tell though.

Brummie here - Unsubscribed too. I originally started watching ITSJPS around the time Joel celebrated reaching 7000 subscribers. Joel comes across as a well-mannered guy, but that video was despicable on every level. It was ill-informed, ignorant and offensive to all Birmingham citizens who have supported him on his KZbin journey. Even subscribers not affiliated with Birmingham commented how wrong it was. I’m guessing people gave him a pre-conceived idea of Birmingham to set him up to draw such a conclusion about the city. Unfortunately, those people are now probably laughing at him behind his back after seeing the reaction. “It is what it is” as he would say. Seeing that the video has now been removed, I’m guessing Joel understands the negative reaction, and has learned a valuable lesson. All that being said, I wish Joel all the best in his KZbin venture.

Your comment on the litter in particular and how that told you a lot about the citizens was particularly galling. I’ve travelled to over 20 cities in the US - did I like all of them? No. Did I base my opinion on a couple of hours intentionally walking away from the city and around the most rundown area I could find? Again no. Why did you do this - was it for clicks, increased interaction, to prove that your patrons that told you not to go there were right? You are not required to like everywhere you go, but to do zero planning and completely avoid the city itself to create a false narrative is actually close to being unforgivable. I’ve said before (when you made your unfortunate comments about Edinburgh and Scottish people based on one negative interaction, that while I think you’re essentially a nice guy you have a lot of growing up to do. It feels like it’s all a tick box exercise- to say he was here and there. You have to plan and prioritise when you’re travelling! Even the Newcastle vid - no visit to St. James Park, the Angel of the North in Gateshead, Tyne bridge, the gorgeous Newcastle castle, the amazing Theatre Royal! What’s the point in travel vlogging- if all you’re doing is looking for your next pint!

You cannot judge a whole area and people, based on the small part you visit. We can all badmouth places, and things, and people, to ourselves, those are our opinions, and we have every right to them, good or bad. But to make a video of it, and put it out there for us all to see, and be incorrect with your judgement, is just asking for trouble. I think my boss is an idiot, and that’s my right to think so. I am trying to get you to get better man! That is why I say that. Don't let your main youtube channel here go down. Don't waste too much on that patreon stuff. Joel, as an American who now lives in the UK just wanted to say that your channel has grown so much due to the support of many proud British people who give you these views. I am not sure why you had to make those comments about Birmingham but just think if it was the other way around. If you were British, had a channel based on America (naturally you will have a lot of Americans subscribing), came to any city in the USA without a plan, you would probably end up in a much rougher/dirty area. Let's face it my friend, every country has it's rough places, but to blame the people is just not right. The last thing you would want to do is judge the people living in the area based on this. I think you owe it to a lot of your viewers to make an apology video or perhaps mature a little bit more, and then come back when you actually have a plan/guide. I mean if this is the sort of content you are making now I guess you should concentrate at our worse issues back home dude.

Very well said. I really do hope that he finds the humility within himself to apologise. Sadly I think he was trying to create a particular narrative to appease and please those that told him not to go to Birmingham. Unfortunately for him it’s majorly backfired. People have been endlessly supportive of him and his channel, sending him thoughtful and often expensive gifts particularly given that most of us are struggling in the midst of a ‘cost of living crisis’ . That said, I get that he’s very young and I thought he looked miserable at times. Solo travelling isn’t easy, particularly when homesickness and loneliness bite. Hopefully, he finds a way to hold his hands up, make amends and move on.

Nicely put. @ryanhelton1865 I think you're missing the point. He seems to have quite a following in the UK, many of whom have spent their own money sending him gifts, some very expensive. They've encouraged him to expand his horizons and have welcomed him here. But he goes on to thank them by wandering aimlessly around the less interesting areas of British cities, and being downright rude about Birmingham, having visited parts of the city that no tourist would ever visit anyway. He had clearly either done no research on where to go, or came here with the sole intent of attempting to do some kind of "gritty documentary". It fell flat, which it seems he himself has realised, otherwise why else would he have taken the Birmingham video down? He's come across as immature, disrespectful, and rude.

Joel has released videos via his other channel after the uk trip, we should acknowledge he is not fazed by the negative comments he had and quite happy to talk about germany in a very positive way he never complained about any place in germany so no one gave him an ear bashing. he has said there are haters regarding his birmingham video and the press have not helped.he just wants to move on from the negativity he got over that one video and as yet he has not addresed anything on his main channel which is not really helping his uk subcribers and im sure he could not care less as some of those are not paying for content. so going on patreon to explain the negativity over the UK trip was NOT a clever move but obviously he thinks his patreons deserve an answer over that video not the wider audience. joels reactions have been to a degree centered over uk related material and other countrys have been mentioned also. people from the UK have been thoughtfull by posting things to him and this should not to be overlooked in all of the judgement. he has chose to be biased in himself over how he communicates to those who were annoyed by that one video which going fwd will to put a dent in the UK reactions. joels approach to those who he said are haters but actually we are not.. is he will move on, continue and ignore the negativity. like a lot more reactors know there is money in patreon and in youtube so as long as he has patreons thats all he needs, no amount of british comments or offended people will deter him, although his fellow americans have commented over his attitude . there are many excellent videos of americans visiting the uk and joels trip this time does not compare.he has his firm followers minus those who unsubbed

Ok, was not gonna comment but... cut Joel some slack on Birmingham...! I used to pass through there when I was travelling up from Brize Norton (I was in the RAF) in the 70s. Birmingham New Street and the Bull Ring were fine, still are, but he made a miscalculation, turned the wrong way and spoke about what he saw, which really does not represent the whole of Birmingham obviously! He made a cursory post about my adopted home city of 24yrs, Manchester. Disappointed that he didn't get the full vibe but, hey he's on a limited timescale... don't forget he's getting tons of "advice" on what to do and where to go so he's not making the easiest of decisions on where and when he's going. The more trips he does here the better imho! PS his weekend in York was his highlight I think, I thoroughly enjoyed it, but then again I'm a Yorkshireman!!!

Ok, fine, whatever, his choice. IMO he is coming across as trying to burn the candle at both ends with his drinking/ nightclubbing, lack of sleep which combined with jet lag and drink isn't good on the body or mind for travelling over a period of time and especially on your own. Never staying in one place long enough to take in or see the sights, wandering round aimlessly in random places like parks, canal tow paths and industrial estates. Yet even if he did not take them with him, the guides and books were there to help him plan and look at. Lots of missed opportunities to get the best or better experience from a visit.
