Nut serts are notorious for coming loose. Plus it holds the terminal up off the metal making the nut sert the only area of contact. I think the best connection would be a simple bolt with a nut on the back. You could always use some thread locker to keep it from coming loose or a lock washer. smear some grease on the bare metal to keep it from rusting.

I came here with plenty of knowledge on a good ground, but you just never know what you can learn and I still learned some valuable stuff. I’ve been using threaded inserts for years and love em. I’ll be combining that perfect circle wire brush with them going forward. I also didn’t realize those bolts paired with the lock washer and serrated nut were self tap. That’ll be added to the arsenal as well. Finding myself on this channel more and more

Excellent demo. Only point of contention for me is that if you have already cleaned down to bare metal I would not use the star washer. My understanding is that those are intended to cut through the paint to reach bare metal to create good contact for electrical connections. That's why they are used on factory ground points that go over paint. If you have already cleaned down to metal, I would just have the terminal pressed directly against it or add a flat washer underneath it if you need clearance for some reason. Drilling a hole and using a nut on the back is always my preferred method if a good factory captive or welded nut is not available. A nutsert should be a good option as well when done correctly, but definitely don't use them in areas exposed to the environment or where they will get wet because in my opinion it will invite too much corrosion.

Good spreading proper technique. Tbh I've had my sub and amp done by others twice and the grounds were always a little lazy, just drilled into the chassis one and done. I've since had to install the same setup 3 times and have done it way better without any effort. I sand down the surface with 60 grit to bare metal, use a big self tapper drilling it tight but not stripping the thread, can add a bit of loctite if worried about loosening but it's never happened to me. Top it off with clear coat over the finished grounding and once dried if you want to be a super pro, add peteolium jelly over the connection to completely lock it off from any outside elements

The best answer is run your sub, and have a volt meter on the power input. If you have serious voltage drops it means bad ground, or bad positive side, or poor battery/ alternator. So you can pinpoint it with a volt meter easily. Troubleshooting one by one is best medicine to learning!

With the nutsert, I don’t think you need to grind the paint off the surface of the vehicle because the nutsert is making contact with bare metal inside the hole that was drilled for it, and it protrudes slightly, keeping the end of the wire out of contact with the vehicle. The only electrical connection is through the nutsert itself, so grinding doesn’t do much if anything.
@frankdimitri686511 күн бұрын
The nursert also clamps at the face, that's what holds it in place. Better to have the metal behind the lip in direct contact without paint.

The star washer (not lock washer) should go between the lug and the metal. Also if you want it to not rust use weld through primer. It is conductive primer.

Drill hole, scuff both sides of frame, use bolt and locknut = more contact area and lower resistance compared to other options.

Just use a pre drill than a tap threader set and the right size bokt if you metal is thick enough and you don’t need a nut cause it makes its own threads I’d still use a star lock washer or bolt that has a locking head. ? Bi like that wire sander with the point that sweet.

I want to run a ground to my frame but I don’t have access to back of the frame to add a nut. I don’t think I can fit a rivet tool down there under either. Are there any tricks to get a nut and bolt on a frame when you don’t have access to the back side of the frame?
@jptheinstallguy2 ай бұрын
Well the good thing about those bolts in this video is that they are self threading bolts as long as the metal is thick enough the bolt will cut threads into the metal and you won't need the nut cause it will be super tight, the lock washer helps with that as well
@Carlossteezyblunts2 ай бұрын
@@jptheinstallguy okay great because I was really hoping if I tried using the bolt in the video I wouldn't need the nut but wasn't sure. My frame is pretty thick so it should work just fine.
