Excellent! I have never seen a video on how train wheels are sharpened/smoothed/shaved, so it was quite interesting! That wheel is so shiny! But, I wonder how many times can a wheel be sharpened until it is no longer usable? I must google that answer!

+Jeffrey Ornstein Hello! Thank you for your message. Diameter of wheel of Japanese most railroads is 860mm(2.821feet). (except a locomotive , the Shinkansen and the streetcar ) Diameter of brand-new wheel is 890mm(2.919feet). If the running distance of the vehicle runs 20,000-100,000km(12427.42-62137.12 mi), They sharpen a wheel. The quantity to sharpen a wheel in once is 5-10mm(0.0164-0.032 feet) at diameter. If the diameter of wheel becomes 800mm(2.624feet), They make replacement to brand-new wheel. Please pardon my poor English. from Sapporo Hokkaido Japan. Best regards.

TKTK43 Thank you! That's very informative. US railroads and transit systems do not like to give out this kind of information, but I suspect they use similar tolerances as Japanese trains (although US train wheels are a slightly larger diameter).
