Dont try to pretend to your kids that the world will kneel before them and opportunities are endless. Set realistic expectations for the world. Tell them that they have to work to earn something and that the world is not as PC and straight forward as someone might tell them. The world is not simple, its harsh, its diverse, its complicated. But always encourage them to figure their own way out. Thats how you build realistic expactations and confidence.

True. Kids have to understand that things don't always go as planned and that failures will come along with successes. No one has so charmed a life that they never make a mistake or face rejection. He's an idiot who talks about science without understanding it. What was done on the allergic kids is a poorly controlled experiment (not that the researchers were bad but just that experimenting on humans is intrinsically difficult) with a small sample size. This experiment needs to be widely repeated on different kids with different ethnicity, countries, living conditions, and many other variables to make the conclusion appliable to all kids. Just because this experiment got a result doesn't mean we can jump to "giving peanut power to kids prevent allergy." Right now what he is scientifically allowed to say is just "these particular kids, who are significantly different from the general population of kids in that they're predisposed to allergy, seem to have lower rates of allergy when given nuts." These findings are interesting and prompt further studies, but they are not sufficient to establish such general conclusion as "giving peanut power to kids prevent allergy."

Nearly everywhere we go, a kid (almost always a different kid) that she goes to school with will see her, and go out their way to say hi to her. I told her that she's popular, and she argued with me, and said all the other kids hate her. I told her if that was true, then those kids wouldn't be so eager for her attention outside of school. I think sometimes children will get a negative idea in their head, and will develop a certain level of confirmation bias when it comes to that negativity.

THIS. Social media is ubiquitous and potentially immortal. Anyone on earth can see it. This is an entirely different environment for a child approaching puberty, who WILL have overly sensitive moments. The point is to not get stuck in them, and not be shaped by them -- and not have the whole world see them. When I was a kid, it was rare for journalists to get permission to take a picture of a famous person's child. Use of children in advertising was frowned upon and regulated. People were appalled at stage Moms, and felt that child actors deserved special consideration and protection. And the kids weren't cry babies at all.

Bullying is done for unreasonable things. Bullying doesn’t equal conflict. They can still experience conflict in this world and it will shape them in good or bad ways. But bullying shouldn’t be tolerated at all!! Bullying is a direct result from adults children are surrounded by. Not parents but any adult they learn that trait from. We shouldn’t allow that. Respect and Toughness is a learned behavior. Just like bullying we should always strive for respect. To get it and to give it.

Joe, We just had the same situation last month. Flying back from Charleston it was announced that due to a passenger with a nut allergy there would be no peanuts served and we were asked to not consume nut containing snacks on the flight. We happened to have a can of peanuts with us. I was quite surprised that the concern of one suppressed that of 87 others.

I disagree with Jonathan about the playground monitor. I always hade one throughout primary and high school in australia (k-12). You are not 100% protected from being bullied or whatever due to the enormous number of kids and there are usually 1 or 2 adults on patrol, they cant be everywhere at once and its a good thing they cant be. So there is an element there where you are exposed so danger but its always a good thing to know that if you fall off something and get seriously hurt or someone wants to cave your head in you have somewhere to run to to seek help quickly.

Written in history, Indian king Chnadragupta Mourya from Mourya dynasty was said to practice 'Mithridatism' which was the practice of consuming snake's venom on a daily basis in small amount to develop immunity and later when his enemies tried to posion him, he alone survived and his wife died. Clearly a great example for the above reference.

So what about the pregnant moms who ate peanut butter and a huge variety of foods, and also gave it to their child.... but the child developed a peanut allergy anyway? 🤷♀️ Coming from someone who deals w their child having nuts allergies, I have my own suspicions... #1 his allergy reaction to peanut butter started immediately following his MMR vaccine (no, I’m not antivax, but it shouldn’t be off the table that something went wrong there since both have to do with immunity). #2 doc told me to take Zantac twice a day while pregnant for the worst indigestion/reflux I ever felt, and I never had those problems before or after pregnancy - only during. Makes me think something was a already wrong with the gut (me or my child’s) and possible the Zantac and MMR could have been what made the cup spill over, so to speak. Immune system might not have been able to handle that vaccine or so many at once, and the Zantac probably made my gut worse... because it actually didn’t help at all when taking it, but the doc insisted that that was all I could do. I also didnt start having the indigestion or reflux until after they gave me a flu shot while pregnant. I never get that shot, but I did when pregnant because the medical ppl were bullies when it came to that... and it really wasnt a big thing like it seems to be today w all the propaganda pushing to get flu shots every year. I think there is something to be said about how the pregnant mom feels when she is pregnant, esp when it comes to digestion. The problems were prob already there.. my child probably couldnt handle foods that I was eating for reasons I dont know. And the prenatal vitamins I had to take before bed were terrible.. made me sick to my stomach, which is why I took them before bed. For reference.. this was all back in 2005.

I grew up with fragile parents and that has in turn made me fragile in some ways. I'm 25 now and the last couple of years I've really have been trying to improve myself. I've started sticking up for myself, I've started to advocate for myself, I've started to be more assertive, and I haven't been shying away from confrontation. It's been a real eye-opener how little opposition I've faced because of how rare genuine self-confidence is. It's nice to have that advantage, however, I have never felt more alienated in my life. People are afraid to interact with me in any way that might cause conflict, so they usually avoid me or just default to agreeing with me. For the first time in my life, I actually crave a fight.

Its is not your job as a parent to make their life a living hell. Dont be mean to them, dont let things happen and have them deal with it by themselves. They NEED a loving and healthy support system. All children need to be taught (and have it modelled) how to deal with conflict. Their inner fesilience will first and foremost come from healthy self esteem and boundaries. No healthy boundaries at home, they wont know how to handle people crossing their boundaries outaide of home.

Exposure therapy. I get pretty bad social anxiety and it has screwed with my life. The way to get better is to expose myself to uncomfortable situations while dropping safety behaviours until I get bored with the exercise. Then I move on to the next thing I am afraid of. Progressive desensitisation. I am a whole lot better than I used to be, but this shit carries a fuck ton of baggage with it and it's a real pain in the arse to sift through it all.

There are no peanut allergies in any person born before 1989. That is when “adjuvant 65” also know as peanut oil was put into childhood vaccine ingredients. Peanut oil injected into the bloodstream of an infant is the perfect way to cause an immune response and anti- bodies for peanuts and other nuts. The peanut allergy epidemic started in 1989. The theory of pregnant mothers abstain from nuts was to counteract the allergy epidemic, it didn’t cause it.

His other son and daughter have both flunked out of college in less than a year. Talking about peanuts, and Joe relates a story about being on a flight and someone was allergic blah, blah.....anyway, planes always serve nuts, and here we have one person controlling the actions of the whole rest of the plane. So anytime this person flies , the whole rest of the plane has to be respectful of their allergy. Fuck that! Take the train, drive, bike, walk or stay home, but no way should the whole plane be subject to the restrictions of one. Period!

I hope this is clear how nuanced my opinion is: I think Jonathan Haidt is a necessary perspective for individuals regardless of political leaning. He will go on record to say he does not speak for conservative values, he is merely arguing for how multiple cognitive distortions play a role in how ideas with good intentions lead to unintentionally bad outcomes. Haidt, like many human beings, has a decent amount of nuance. The book co-authored by Greg Lukianoff is a challenging read because the authors themselves have to be careful about their own cognitive distortions (it can be argued some of this comes through through their dedication of detail regarding certain stories over others). So ultimately, there is the ultimate challenge of this book: can you read this, pick out and understand the argument, but also allow yourself to utilize the tools here to create a counterargument to the book you just read, that just taught you this stuff? I respect what Haidt has given to the psychological discipline, but I also disagree with him too. I wish he talked more about the limitations of his research; some of this is glossed over momentarily when looking at specific surveys about "words as violence" (I will say I have not completely finished this book so there's my own limitation). Omitting some of this for the sake of talking about the overall findings to push support for a particular argument does not paint a complete picture. It's confirmation bias in which a psychological researcher pulls from the research the most important pieces to confirm their viewpoint, rather than utilizing a study with a similar validity to unearth a possible limitation.
