@@robmckrobmck5567 He fought a heavyweight and didn’t get knocked out. I’m not a big subscriber of that idea that his chin was suspect. People have said that about Lewis and it’s an exaggeration as well.
@robmckrobmck55672 жыл бұрын
I never considered Lennox Lewis a glass jaw. Any Hvywt can be knocked out by another HVYWT opponent of reasonable power landing perfectly on the jaw. That happened once to Lewis when a defensive lapse exposed him, right? I'm critical of Roy for his failure to maximize his unmatched talent by developing defensive skills that would've kept him unbeaten longer. Even as an amateur, he dared opps to hit him instead of learning how to box. His style was unique, unorthodox, and exciting but had a shelf life. After the Ruiz fight he stood at 48-1 DQ loss with 40 TKO, KOs but somewhere he lost a degree of his innate talent that kept his jaw untested for so long. The very next fight he looked old. The next two- little birdies-- knocked out cold. The 26 fights after Ruiz, he was 18-8 with 7 KO, TKOs. Among the 8 losses, he was KOed 5 times, put to sleep 3 times.
@connshawnery64892 жыл бұрын
@@robmckrobmck5567 Roy had the gift of natural athleticism and incredible reflexes. He was like an Ali in the sense that his natural gifts sanitized his drawbacks. HOF trainers Eddie Futch and George Benton advised Buddy McGirt (Tarver’s trainer) on how to beat the 35 year old Roy in that second Tarver fight (the first time Jones was stopped by TKO). Roy had a bad habit of throwing a lot of wide shots which he was able to get away with in his younger days. Tarver was instructed by back Roy up and when a wide shot was coming, to catch and fire a straight, short counter. No wide hooks or telegraphed punches and it worked. Roy was never the same fighter afterwards.
@robmckrobmck55672 жыл бұрын
@@connshawnery6489 well said. I would say the 2nd incarnation of Ali was a much different fighter with noticeably diminished talents instead relying on skills, guts, guile, and a solid chin, so different then the undefeated, undisputed, unhittable butterfly with the stinger jab that was banned for the last 3 years of his prime.

@jamesbarbour84004 ай бұрын
And despite the aging of the human body, Tyson has that primal killer instinct that could just kick in naturally, even if he's trying to conciously suppress it - you either have it or you don't. In Tysons two fights with Frank Bruno, this was clearly illustrated. Brunos' physique was that if an Adonis but he didn't have what Tyson had on the inside - a never say die Tiger attitude. As an aside, Bruno fought dirty against Tyson, by holding his head with one hand and punching with the other. It was the only way he could get punches in and he knew he was in trouble. He was more of a classic, long range fighter, whereas Tyson was an inside fighter, who'd swarm all over you, just like Joe Frasier. Pretty similar approaches in their fighting styles.

Snoop Dog’s commentary should go down in history over this exhibition bout. For me it’s everything I could hope to have seen in the art of pugilism. Didn’t want to see either man hurt. Just try and show off the art of strike and protection. It was good medicine for the entire country and I thank everyone that was involved. Roy's strength was his incredible speed and unorthodox style, Mike's was his power -- unfortunately for Roy, speed goes away long before power. Had he retired after the Ruiz fight, he may have been considered the #4# GOAT.
@bigmack22623 жыл бұрын
@@UncleEbenezer77 I really think it depends on the conditioning and training of each of these two come the day of the fight. Tysons style was often said to have suited a younger man and required a great deal of endurance and head movement. If jones can evade him in early rounds and hit him with his jab he could win. Best boxer ever! In my humble opinion
@brucedoyle40553 жыл бұрын
I totally agree, back than RJJ was in my opinion the best Boxer to look at.in the Ring, he was a Natural from incredible Footwork to fast and accurate punches, and inhuman Reflexes. Mike Tyson who was mostly known for his Crazy Power , Speed and Accuracy, his footwork and movement had mostly just one track, but again he is a Powerhouse, one succefull Punch from Mike and his opponents were mostly Done. Regardless both are Legends in the Boxing World. But i have to say, i think Mike will win this, i mean i never thought he could regain his former self, but his training Video Lately is terrifying, he Punches sound like they never lost Power. And its simply harder for Roy to regain his former speed and reflexes when you grow Older, thats just how its is, still think he might be Faster than Mike when it comes to Footwork and maybe Jabs, but i dont think that will be enough.

Yeah I still can remember the night Buster Douglas knocked him out. That was literally the most shocked I have ever been about an outcome of a sporting event. I grew up watching Mike, loved every minute of it. Roy is my favorite boxer of all time. I don't agree that we'll never see another fighter like Mike. There's likely other athletes out there that could perform the same if trained to fight. Boxing just isn't where the world's top athletes land any more.
